Hi I've recently become the OPC for Wiltshire parish Steeple Ashton.
Just to let you know there were lots of the Marks family in Steeple Ashton. I'm trying to gather more information about the village and people that lived there. Have you any stories about your ancestors you'd like to share?

Hello there, do you have any further information for Mary Marks or George Brown.  I can't seem to trace  Mary b.c. 1837 in Steeple Ashton in either the 1841 or the 1851 census.  There are indeed (as pensive has said) a number of Marks and Markes in Steeple Ashton but not a Mary to fit your birth date.  Do you have any information in relation to their marriage in Bath ? do you have the certificate? this would list both Mary & George's father's and their occupations and whether they were deceased or not.  The reference for the marriage (if you don't already have this) is
Vol. 5C  page 1239 Oct-Dec Qtr 1855 Bath

Regards

I have a copy of steeple Ashton church charity bag dated 1832-1851 money collected by the church for charitable purposes. It records nov 18 1848 Mary Marks broken arm given 2/6d.
This could be your Mary.
Have you considered the possibility that Mary married somebody Marks and he died so Marks is her married name?
Just a thought!

Your in the right date range Pensive - in the 1851 there are two Mary Mark's that I can see in Steeple Ashton , one born 1825 and one born 1798, so could be either of them that broke their arm, I just can't see a young  Mary Marks to fit with a birth date c. 1837 in either the 1841 or or 1851.  I wonder whether she happened to just  be in Steeple Ashton rather than be born there, as there are a number of Mark's families in the area.  If there are any further details available this may narrow the search for her.
