Title: DALBY/Hobson Elizabeth - COMPLETED with thanks
Post by: annamaywong on Tuesday 11 May 10 14:37 BST (UK)
I am not sure what way around the above Surnames should be as the Lady was a Widow and re-married after travelling to Australia in the late 1850's.  She married a Crawford Mollison in the early 1860's in Sandhurst (now Bendigo).
It would appear that 3 Sisters travelled to Australia, Martha, Nina and Elizabeth, and one married a Bank Manager in Bendigo a Gordon Blair.  I have been unable to find any trace of them in England or when they travelled, any help would be appreciated.  Snezzy. ???

Just a quick line to thank Jubb, Ralen and Ennael for their help with the above research, if I could find out more details as posted on the Jamaican Board in respect of Elizabeth Fullarton - my cup would runneth over.  Thanks Anna :)

There is quite a lot of information available.

Thank you for your message Leanne, I have done some research on the English sites, however because I was not sure of the name Dalby/Hobson, it has made life somewhat difficult.  My initial aim was to  try and  find Crawford Mollisons
(1817/1893) Mother,  Elizabeth Fullarton who came from Jamaica.  She married a another Crawford Mollison in England in 1802.  Have been looking on Jamaica Family Search, but to no avail as yet,  Thank you for your help,  Anna :)

Dalby Hobson and Mollison

I have lately found this exchange on Rootschat, but don't really know what the original subject matter was or questions were!

Both the Hobsons, and to some extent the Dalbys, appear on my mother's family tree, and I have some unpublished information about the families. My mother, Eileen, was a Dalby Hobson before marrying my father.

Delighted to swap what information I have with whoever is wanting answers! I am not sure if I can answer questions about the Australian relatives, but I can trace the Hobson family quite a bit further, and a little about the Dalbys.

Please could someone update the URL for the Wills of Elizabeth and Crawford?
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search_results.asp.  I get a "page not found" for this.

Many thanks.

Bonjour Edwin,  Sorry I did not get back to you yesterday re above.  I would be pleased to swap any information with you. The question is as listed in the first post, to the effect I was having problems knowing whether Elizabeth was a Dalby or Hobson ( I have since I " think" found that she was a Dalby who married a Richard Dalby),  but was widowed shortly after, she then travelled out to
Australia with her two sister,  Raylen and Leanne have confirmed this fact in
subsequent posts.
Elizabeth Dalby and Crawford Mollison's (2),  Grand Daughter was born in Australia to
Grace Thomas and yet another Crawford Mollison (3) and I understand that this Gentleman visited the Dalby's in Guelder House, Wandsworth, London in 1898 and some of the family came from Dalby Village in Alleston Forest. Yorkshire. I would be pleased to have any information regarding the English Dalby/Hobson and can possibly pass on details  in respect of the Australian link.
I am trying to trace Crawford Mollison's Mother who was born in Jamaica in 1780, married in London to yet another Crawford Mollison (1)  in 1802 - have numbered them in case you get as confused , as I do.
Hope this is a start, look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Anna  ;)

Bonsoir Anna!  I guess you live in France?

You have presented me with a challenge!  I have my father's papers to hand, and find that I have yet to annotate them and arrange them in order.  However they do form a tree, although not very many sources are stated. Most come from other family members:

Robert Hobson bap. 28 ix 1766  m. Elizabeth Dodds (I think) b. 1764  He was my GGG Grandfather.

Robert (junior) is at present the only recorded child, born 17 vii 1804. The family lived sometime at Briggate, Leeds and I believe owned/worked in a brush factory. He died 23 iii 1857, buried at Finchley Cemetery, London, Grave 48 St Pancras Ground. He married 25 ii 1831 Mary Ann Dalby ('May'), she b. 25 ii 1810, d. 3 v 1850.

He married for a second time Harriet . . . b. 28 ix 1810 where and when I do not know, but no issue.

Children are:
Maria Dalby Hobson b 26 xi 1831 left for Australia 6 vii 1852. Married Henry Hooke (Harry) 8 vi 1854. I have two further generations. Sounds as if she is 'Nina'.
Five recorded children.No further details.

Elizabeth Hobson ('Lizzie', and later 'Lil') b. 10 viii 1836  d. ?
Married 1 = Richard Dalby b. ca 1834 d. aged 26 on 27 x 1860.  I have one of her visiting cards in the name of Mrs Richard Dalby, also that of her husband, coupling her maiden name of Hobson after his death.  Have traced no issue.
Married 2 = W Crawford Mollison 1862

Robert Hobson, Congregational Minister, b. 11 vi 1838 Sandwich, Kent. Married Polly Adams, and went to Melbourne. d. 1891. One child died n infancy.

Martha Ann Hobson  b. 12 x 1841.  m. Gordon Blair.  No further details.

Samuel Hobson  b. 15 i 1844.  Had 3 sons and 4 daughters (no details)

Mary Ann Dqlby Hobson  b. 6 ix 1846, d. 7 xi 1847

Mary Ann Dodds Hobson  b. 13 ii 1848,  d. 15 xi 1849.

James Dalby Hobson  b. 28 iv 1849  bap. 25 v 1849, Leeds.
Married 1 = Martha Adams dau of Thomas and Amelia Adams of Romford, Essex.  b. 31 x 1852.  d. 2 xi 1908. buried Maidstone Cemetary Grave 144 Div. 2, Section E. They had six children, including my Grandfather, Bernard Dalby Hobson, b. 1883 at Briggate.
Married 2 = Katherine Maria Theobald  b. 4 ii 1874 - one son and two grandsons.

I have extensive Mollisons, names but no dates. My mother Eileen was in extensive correspondence with Eileen Ledlie Willson, dau of Florence Mollison, the younger sister of Crawford Henry Mollison 2, eldest son of Wm. Crawford Mollison 1, from whom came much of his informaton.

Likewise some Wilsons and McClures, also Goldies in Canada.

I shall try to assemble much of this on an Excel file over Christmas, but it will take a little time.  When done perhaps we can compare further notes.

Where do you fit into all this??!

I think I have found your Crawford 3, as Crawford Derek Mollison, whose parents were Mollison 2 and his second wife Corientia Browne. But this isn't your Grace Thomas!! It makes him the eldest son of the eldest son.

Have a very happy Christmas . . it's snowing hard here in Oxford!

Edwin

Hi there Anna,
Elizabeth Fullerton & Crawford Molleson are my direct line relatives. Here's what I know:

Elizabeth Fullerton was born abt 1782 Jamaica and died Apr. 1857 London. Her Father was named Alexander. She inherited a large amount of money from him. I know nothing about the Jamaica connection and would very much like to learn anything. She married  Crawford Molleson 24/3/1775 Campbelltown Argyll Scot.

Crawford's son was Crawford Molleson born 6/6/1817 Hastings Sussex and died 3/6/1893 Windsor, Melbourne. He married 9 oct. 1862 Bendigo Elizabeth Hobson. Crawford was a presbyterian, Resident Goldfield Warden, Assistant Commissioner of Goldfields Bendigo 1858, Police Magistrate & on the Gold Licensing Bench. His wife Elizabeth Dalby Hobson was known as Lil or Lizzie. She was born 10/8/1836 Sandwich, Kent. She died 13/6/1903 Wrexham Rd., Windsor, Melbourne. She was a quaker. Elizabeth had been previously married to Richard Dalby (possibly a cousin). Richard was born 1834,married Elizabeth in 1853 England and died 1860. He was a clergyman. Their only child died. Richard & Elizabeth were only married for 7 mths when he died. Elizabeth came to Australia as a 21 year old widow in 1861. Thanks for telling me abt her coming with two sisters. This I did not know. Elizabeth was a good musican, very religious, her sister married the Bank Mgr Union Bank near Sandhurst, Bendigo and her family came from Leeds in Yorkshire. Elizabeth's Father was Robert Hobson 17/12/1804 England & died 23/8/1857 Finchley, Middlesex. Her Mother was Maryann Dalby 25/2/1810 and died 3/5/1850. Robert Hobson's Father was also Robert Hobson & his Mother Eliz. Dodds born 1764. Eliz. Dodd's Father was John Dodds and her Mother Isobel.

Hope this helps regards Edwina in Melbourne

to Edwin Shelwin, Hi I am fairly new to this website but wondering if you knew anything about a James Mollison born in Scotland in 1810.... he was an artist and in the 1840's we think, went to Germany, married and died there.
Was wondering if you had an info on this man??
Regards
