Hi there,
Is there anyone in the Hampsire area who can help or shed light on the birth of my grt,grt granma, I do have this info on her 1851 Cenus HO107/1633 folio39 pg8. House of Industry, Carisbrooke. Hampshire. Rosina Leary, 18 (c 1833), Prostitute, born Hampshire, Newport, Isle WIght, I thought it was important to include to include this entry as it appears to be the only cenus that has Rosina birth town on it? & we know she married a William Ask. I should point out with a last name Leary, that could be Catholic, I don,t know.
I woul appreciate any help or guidence that can be given to me.
Kindest regards
Leslie Webster

Welcome to Rootschat websl :)
Is it possible the name is Seary?
Do you have the Marriage Cert to William as I cannot find the Marriage on FreeBMD.
What does it say for her Fathers name?
When and where was William born?
Trish :)

Hi Leslie (and Trish),
Not much help but I'm adding the 1841 census:
1841
HO107/405/18 10 15
Carisbrooke, Hampshire
Isle of Wight House of Industry
Rosina Leary, 8, born in county
Also in the house of Industry, a Hannah Leary age 4 born in county. The IGI has this possible extracted christening for little Hannah:
Hannah Tansom Leary, birth 3 April, christening 18 April 1837 Roman Catholic, Newport, Hampshire
Father: Leary, mother Margeritae

I can find Rosina in the Workhouse again in 1891 Census.
RG12/860/91/4
Here she says she was born Portmouth, Hampshire
This is is probably her Death Reg;
Rosina ASK, September 1920, Portsmouth, 2b 474, Age 86

Maybe will wait til websl is back online again as I cant find William and Rosina together!
Have you Tati?

I would like to say thanks to my fellow Roots Chatters who viewed my post & to the ones who replied to me, in doing so ive now got a Death Reg for my Grt, Grt Gran, it is Rosina Ask, September 1920, Portsmouth, 2b 474, age 86.
Now i was asked if i had a Marriage Cert for my Grt,Grt Gran & yes i have found one, here it is. Date of Marriage: 17th April 1855.
Place of marriage: Holy Trinity Church in the parish of Portsea in the county of Southampton.
William Ask was a seaman & a widower at the time of the marriage.
Rosina Leary was a spinster at the time of the marriage.
Williams father was also called William Ask & he was also a Seaman.
Rosina,s father was Matthew Leary & he was a Labourer.
Witnesses were Robert Talbot and Elliza Leary, Elliza could have been a sister of Rosina?
William Ask must have been illiterate as his mark is 'x' rather than a signature.
I can,t make out there ages on cert as its very distorted the wrting.
Hopefully somewhere out there, this info may lead me in the direction of a birth cert for her, as this, if possible would make my day.
Kindest Regards to all.
Leslie Webster.

If she married in 1855, and died in 1920 age 86, it is looking as if sh ewas born before Civil Registration began in 1837, so there will not be a birth cert for her. It will be a case of looking for a christening for her (if she was christened)
Have you found her on any censuses after her marriage? They will give an indication of where and when she said she was born, which will give a starting place.

There is this possible Death;
Matthew LEARY, September 1838, I of Wight, 8 129
There has to be a reason Rosina and sibling/s ( cant remember how many from the other thread) ended up in the Workhouse. The Mother may have had to leave them there if she was unable to support them as a Widow.
There is a Marriage;
Margaret LEARY, September 1840, Alverstoke, 7 39
May be related or not.
As we have no idea of Mother Margarets date or place of birth it is almost impossible to check out all the possible spouses on that Reg .
As Rosina was 9 in 1841 Census and 18 in 1851 there will be no Birth Cert for her as she was born before Civil Reg began.
Her Sister Hannahs Christening found on the other thread is the only possible lead so far other than Census and Certs you have.

There is a baptism for an Elizabeth Leary in 1818 in the catholic records of St James, Winchester, father Matthew Leary, mother Martha Clevell.
Matthew Leary married Martha Clevell at St John, Winchester 21 Aug 1821.
Matthew was 44 when he died in 1838.
Hope this helps.
