Title: Killinick, DANBY family, pre-1798
Post by: JillStatton on Tuesday 11 May 10 01:59 BST (UK)
Does anyone have a connection to or information regarding the DANBY family of artist, Francis DANBY (1793-1861) purported to have been born in Killinick WEX.  His father was James DANBY who farmed a small property, in Killick?

James DANBY married 1/2 in 1762 to Susanna HARVEY, d/o Rev Ambrose HARVEY, of Hermitage WEX; married 2/2 in 1781 to Margaret WATSON, of Dublin.

I want to establish that John Harvey DANBY, born 1767, was a son of James' first union, and hence the half-brother of Francis DANBY, artist.  My connection to John Harvey DANBY is through his daughter who married Allan WEBB in Calcutta, India.

Any help appreciated.  With thanks,

Hi

Do you know which religion the Danbys were and which church they attended.  It may be that birth records are avialable and they may show the child(ren) born to this couple, so John Harvey may be listed, if he is a son.

You probably know that the Danby Lodge Hotel now exists in Killinick.

Cheers

The family of John Harvey DANBY were definitely Anglicans but no idea about James DANBY's family.

I did see reference to the Danby Hotel and wondered whether it was named for a former family.  Anyone know anything about its origins?

From  www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics

Danby Wexford;
Francis Danby 16/11/1793-9/2/1861 was an Irish painter of the Romantic era.
Born in the south of Ireland, he was one of a set of twins, his father, James, farmed in a small property he owned in near Wexford, but his death, in 1897, caused the family to move to Dublin, while Francis was still a school boy.
In 1929, Danby's wife desreted him, running off with painter Paul Falconer Poole. For a decade he lived on the Lake of Geneva. He later moved to Paris for a short while.
He returned to England in 1840, when his sons, James and Thomas, both artists were growing up.
Both of Danby's sons were landscape painters. The elder, James Farancis Danby (1816-75) exhibited at the Royal Academy.
The younger, Thomas (1817-86) specialized in watercolors.
Some paintings were;
Thw Upas Tree (1870)
Delivery of the Israelites (1825)
Opening of the Sixth Seal (1828) (won 200 Guineas)
The Deluge (1840)
The Golden Age (1827)
Rich and Rare were the Gems She Wore  (1837)
The Evening Gun (1848)

Thanks Seanmac,

I do have copious details of Frank DANBY's life in England. Perhaps I should have asked for details of the origins of Frank DANBY?

I am more interested in the family of James DANBY's first marriage to Susanna HARVEY, or the half brothers or sisters of Frank DANBY.

Thanks.

Hi Jill,
I am responding to your post about John Harvey Danby. Whilst I know nothing about his parents, he appears in my family tree because he married Emma Avery, whose father Robert Avery (b. 1764  Hampshire, UK) was the brother of my 3 x great grandfather, Joseph Avery (b. 1769 Minstead, Hampshire). I don't know if you have any info about the Averys, but if not, I'm happy to share what I know. I noticed too that you live in Adelaide. I lived there for 20+ years after emmigrating from the UK in the late 1970s. My mother and sister and family still live there. But it was my dad who was an Avery and unfortunately he died 10 years ago.
cheers

Jill,
First time user here.
My Family was from Killinick and have some Killinick Cof I records and cemetery records.
A few Harveys but no Danby.
My family had the next town land along ballybrennan big as well as Little. The current owner is photographing the cem for me but he has not said anything about Danby's.
If they had a farm have you looked at Griffith valuation to get his actual location? This may lead to a different church closer to where he lived rather than where her parents were.

I didn't realise that, aghadowey, so I wonder whether Nikki does.  Is there any way of alerting her to the fact?
