Title: Whipmaking

Does anyone have any info about whip manufacturing in Nottinghamshire in the 1800s? I've googled without success. I've looked in trade directories and know the names of the manufacturers, and I think it was an apprenticed trade.

But what I want to know is - was it a common trade or were only a comparitively few people involved?  And where was it based?

I'm looking at 3 different families based in St Mary and Sneinton and trying to find any link between them. The men in all 3 worked as whipmakers, just one of the many co-incidences between these families. If it was a trade with a small base, that might swing my findings away from coincidence and towards connection (oviously there are also other links between these families BTW! haha)

If you don't have access to Ancestry the 81 census index is free.

Enter whip maker in the "keyword" box and you get 772 for England, 63 for Nottinghamshire, 44 for St Mary's and 7 for Snenton.

Hope you've had some luck with the families - I found one of my husband's ancestors (Nottingham St Mary district) was a whip thong maker and wondered what this was. I came across this site, which I thought you might find interesting:

Hi noticed your interest in Kilner name I married a Kilner and have all census records and other info on this family from 1841 and some they before came from  from Ireland to Nottingham and Leicester

Alibob, please tell me more! I have lots of info re Notts and Leicester Kilners (not least thanks to RCers who have helped in the past) and would love to know more about what you've found.

(since you've come into a thread about whipmakers, I'm guessing your link is John Kilner - is that right?)

I have both Leicester and Nottingham Kilner trees. I am descended from the Leicester bunch. My gut feeling is that the two branches tie together but I've not been able to prove it categorically.

So I have lots of info I could share but lots of questions too!
