Title: Donenico BLEFARI
Post by: Gypsydescendant on Monday 10 May 10 14:27 BST (UK)
Hi Guys Its been a while since I have visited I am searching for any info on Donenico Blefari I know he died in Sydney Australia in 1979 aged about 88yrs and his wife Giulia died in 1977 he bought some land in NSW in 1942 and 1945 I have found him on the eletoral role in 1943 in Bass Hill but that is all I can find. I know he was born in Calabria.I would like to know when he arrived in Australia and where and when he was married,I cant find his marriage in NSW or Queensland so it could be Victoria? did he ever have a criminal record? there is one record on the Australian national archives saying he was born in Italy 4.8.1892 but I m not sure if thats right but the date fits according to his death, as I am in Australia you may not hear back from me straight away because of the time difference but I will be back in the next day or so if anyone can help

Hi Gypsy

Could this perhaps be your Domenico Blefari here.

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/22526420?searchTerm=blefari

It seems this particular man was originally charged with murdering his nephew however it looks like it was reduced to manslaughter. Interestign reading - quite a few articles - I just searched Blefari. His age in 1947 is given as 55yrs.

Also found the funeral notices for both Domenico & Guilia here, I presume you have already seen these though.

Sorry I coud not be off more help

There is no marriage in Victoria.  Perhaps he married in Italy before emigrating.

You can purchase transcriptions of death certificates in NSW for [AUD$17.50]  The transcription is emailed to you.  The information may help you as long as the knowledge of the informant was correct.

Information on death certificates in NSW -

Full name, sex and age, date and place of death, place of residence, usual occupation and marital status at date of death.
Place of marriage, age when married, full name of spouse.
Children's name and ages.
Parent's names including mother's maiden name.
Cause of death and duration of last illness.
Burial or cremation date and place.

There are three files for your man on NAA  including naturalisation and emigration.  You can purchase these files online on the NAA website.

Also with the spelling BELFARI

Hi Gypsy,

Some basics on research in Italy (you will be looking at civil registration at this stage)
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Italy_Civil_Registration-_Vital_Records

Form letters if you don't speak Italian
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/Davids_form_letters.html
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resources/letters/index.asp

Oppido Stato Civile (Town Hall) contact address
http://www.tuttitalia.it/calabria/51-oppido-mamertina/

I haven't done Italian research for quite awhile, and don't know if they have implemented an official pricing system (it used to just be the size of the bribe you were willing to pay!  ;D) Have a google and see if you can find any current info on certificate costs.  Google translate is also very helpful with reading documents http://translate.google.com/#

If he was a convicted felon, he would not have been eligible to vote that might explain why he is not on  the electoral roles

Hello Gypsydescendant

We have just stumbled upon your question regarding Domenico Blefari, we were excited by this information and we are curious how you are related to him or how your friend is related to him.

We do know Domenico was not in jail for 15 years, it was around 6.5 years due to good behaviour.

Really eager to find out any info as well and would like you to reply and/or your friend.

Cheers

  Welcome to rootschat  :D

If you wish to contact each other (or Gypsydescendant) privately then you need to make 2 more posts - they can be trivial.  After 3 posts you can send a personal message by clicking on the little scroll under their name.

cheers,

Adding : I could post Domenico Blefari's death notice if you would like it

Hi Tonio2,

If you mean me - I don't fit in at all  ;D

Just hoping that you could get in contact with other family.

I do have access to archived SMH until 1995 if you would like any death notices for your family.

cheers,

Hi,

He may also have not become an Australian citizen i.e. naturalised or being incarcerated, not on electoral rolls whilst a "guest" of Her Majesty & didn't re enrol upon his release fro jail !

Thanks Everyone  :)

Catz here (Julie), unfortunately I stopped using my catz email a while ago and did not know anyone answered.  My Cousin sent the rootschat link to me to check out and I had remember I posted a message.

Wow, Gypsy, I must know your friend, the grandson, unless I have not met him yet, I am a granddaughter of Domenico, I started doing my family history, sadly after mum passed away (it would be so much easier if she were alive) and I have a lot of information on our family.

I would love to chat.

Cheers
Julie (catz)

He was also a member of a club near where he lived, pardon my spelling or translation as I don't know what the name means. The Club was "Fogolar Furlan" Full of interesting and some shady characters, I used to get a frisking every time I went in. Money all over the tables, lots of Vino and cups of strong coffee, with eyes watching every move and the weapons out of site but not out of reach. ::)

An interested old bystander :o

Hello Neil

You have sparked interest, did you know of my grandfather or know someone in his family?  How did you come by the information?  The shadiness sounds about right, I have heard of many of these clubs in the Bankstown area, from family members.  Is there any other information out there about my grandfather that you may know... if you think it is personal message me.

Hi Julie,

My information is a few years old early to mid 70's. I worked for some interesting characters in the Club Industry. I remember your Grandfather from both Fogolar Furlan and Marconi Soccer. I knew quite a few of the Calabrian's or that's what I knew them as. All very interesting people. I lived at Mt Pritchard at the time and many were neighbours and fellow church goers. I will pm some stuff to you as I have to go out now, don't know if relevant, but interesting. :o
