Title: Hagley Hall, Herefordshire
Post by: Glamis on Sunday 09 May 10 11:06 BST (UK)
Hello, I have found out that my ancestors used to live at Hagley Hall. This would be around 1861- they emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 arriving in 1864. I don't know if they owned it or rented it. Does anyone know of it? It was listed in 1952 according to the Britsh Listed Buildings site. I have Google Earthed it but this gives an ariel view. I wonder if anyone has any photos or info about it? I'd be very grateful for any pointers.

Oh good grief- how spooky life is or can be. I don't suppose you ever took a photo of it or know anything about it? This is so good of you to reply. Thanks Barb.

I hate to put a downer on this Glamis, but the Hagley Hall Barb is referring to is in Hagley, near Stourbridge.   :(

Use Google streetview for an even better view.  It matches the description from the Listed Buildings site.

Thank you so very much Little Nell. That is amazing- how and where did you find this picture? I wonder about the description of the 'faded name' that the Photographer mentions at its foot? All the same, its a handsome house. Being Hagley Hall, do you know why it is called Bartstree?

Bartestree is the name of the hamlet near it.  Hagley is about the same distance from the house  to the north west.  All are in the parish of Lugwardine.

The site on which I found it is very easy to use and search.  I put the post code into the search box and looked for houses which matched the description of the listed building.

The name is thought to be derived from the Old English Beorhtwald's tree.

probally refers to a Sycamore or Field maple tree from the leaves turning fire red.

Thank you both Little Nell and Bilge. Except what is a Boerhtwald's tree? I have never heard of this before.

If you google it you will come up with various breakdowns of the name, from Old english.

Hi Dalek

If you go to     http://www.geograph.org.uk/    and put in the reference number you've just given, it will produce 9 photos.  One is of the farm but not the specific building you're after.

A  ;)

Hi Arranroots, Thank you for this. I've tried to put it in but it doesn't seem to find the photos. I know they're there as you have seen them so the ref I have copied maybe missing something. Not sure but I expect its me. Anyway. Again, Thanks for your help.

Try missing out the "gaps" between the digits and it should work.

Brilliant, Thanks Arranroots. Its so strange to see it. To think our family members used to live there, walk around here, ride through it. Its quite sureal actually. I've told another cousin in Perth. He's quite astounded. He'll be here in June so I wouldn't be suprised if he decides to make a trip to it.

Hello All, the dots are finally joining up Thanks to all of your help. I have tried to attach one of several photos that a very kind Rootschatter sent me in November last year. It is of a family grave in Weston Beggard Church yard of which there are many. I hope it attaches this time. If not- sorry. No, I am not having much luck so I do apologise.
I've been given this though. All listed even the Hankins memorials and tombs.

I just thought this may be of interest to people. Its old and gone now but was a family property. It demonstrates the standing they held at one time.

Dalek39, All I can say is it is as much a 'gobsmack' to me as to you. Remember I wasn't born here in the Uk, it's geography was and still is something I am still learning. These properties are and were amazing.

Absolutely ages ago someone was enquiring about Hagley Hall, Herefordshire. Any info would be welcome and I would like to give info too. It's listed somewhere as Lugwardine, actually it's in Bartestree, Hereford, an adjacent village running along the A438

Hi and Thank You for taking interest in this. I have spoken to The Council and the Planning department about Hagley Hall. I had a vague and totally unrealistic notion about buying it back! Anyway, It has been sold now but was up for sale at the time. From memory of what they told me it seems as with the modernisation of many old properties, sadly much of what was now isn't with old out buildings having been demolished and with the land divided for new building. Cheers Glamis.

You wouldn't have wanted it if you had seen the state of it but we'd been passing it for many years and it really intrigued us. The state of it was deplorable but my husband wanted to have a look at it when it came up for sale!
At his age he should have known better but fell in love with it too.
So about 4 years later we haven't quite finished the restoration but it shouldn't be too far away!
What was your original interest? I've just joined!
Just read the original posts.
I've loads of pics of the dereliction and how it is now and can tell you the little I know and what we've done to it. As a brick and timber house you really can't alter the original design

Hi Hagleygal, Did you buy it then? I am envious. I am sure it was in a state as the pictures showed. My/Our interest is that my Great Grand Father who was John Herbert Hankins, was born there as the eldest of 10 children. His parents took them all to New Zealand in circa 1863. He was then just 17. Dalek39 is the Great (?)great Grand Daughter of JH Hankins youngest sister; Alice who was the baby of the brood. She was only 10 months or so when they left for NZ.

Sorry- I need to correct the post above as JH Hankins wasn't born at Hagley- he lived there with his parents and siblings. It is however, highly likely that his baby sister was born there.
