I am seeking information on Charles McKanna.
NSW BDM show Charles McKanna and wife Eda being the parents of:
Charles Cecil b.1899 Pt Macquarie, NSW
Francis John Leslie b.1901 Kempsey, NSW
Eda b.1902 Kempsey
Albert Edward Yates b.1906 Kempsey
Runa Marie Gwendoline b.1908 Kempsey
I found a reference to a Charles McKanna as unassisted immigrant - Port Jackson, NSW.
Also found a death index record for a Charles d.1927 (age 65 = b.1862)
Like to find out when and where he was born and when he arrived in Australia.

McKANNA is not a commonly occuring name in the NSW indexes and some of the births to Charles and Ada A/Eda A F were registered as McKENNA. Charles death registration does not name his parents,
Birth certificates in NSW detail the following -
Full name, sex, date and place of birth.
Mother's details including full name and maiden name, age, occupation, place of birth.
Father's details including full name, age, occupation, place of birth.
Date and place of parent's marriage.
Previous children of the relationship.
Death Certificates in NSW -
Full name, sex and age, date and place of death, place of residence, usual occupation and marital status at date of death.
Place of marriage, age when married, full name of spouse
Children's name and ages.
Parent's names including mother's maiden name.
Cause of death and duration of last illness.
Burial or cremation date and place.
Transcriptions are cheaper than certified certs -

The only Charles McKANNA, unassisted immigrant I can find, arrived in Sydney, on the 28 Sep 1839 on the ABBOTSFORD .

Thanks for your help Cando, I will buy some certificates and see what I can find.
Thanks for the 1903 electoral roll, I didn't know Eda's other names - one step forward. :)
Interesting, the Charles McKanna you found that arrived in 1839 - makes you wonder if there may be another generation which was born in Australia. Maybe the Charles I am looking for, was born in Australia around 1862.
The NSW BDM starts at 1788, is there any other records before this date?
-
Cando, the last statement I made "The NSW BDM starts at 1788, is there any other records before this date?" didn't make sense :-[
I guess I am looking for Charles McKanna b. c1862, gets hard as you say when records could be McKenna (lot of them)

National library digitised newspapers has a 1927 death announcement for your Charles, 65, who was apparently born at Yarras on the Hastings River, son of John. Burial at Kempsey cemetery

There is also a family death notice

Civil registration commenced in New South Wales in 1856 and any records from the time of first settlement - 1788 - 1856, will be transcriptions of parish records.
I only gave the details of the unassisted emigrant Charles McKANNA in 1839 to eliminate him from your search.
I think Yarras would be in the Bathurst reg district.

Most Excellent Judith. :)
Another step forward - Charles was born in Australia, father John. now I have to find out about John.
I noticed on the NSW BDM that there is a John McKanna and Ellen as parents of Catherine b.1848 and Laurence b.1849 - doesn't give a district. Could be the same John.
Cando - Yarras is west of Wauchope (Near Port Macquarie) A large timber area, cedar mainly. I used to live in the area and we got a lot of timber from the Yarras area. Charles's first child was born in Port Macquarie before they moved to Kempsey.
The Charles who arrived in 1839 may well be John's Father.

There is a Yarras north east of Bathurst...are there two places of the same name in NSW? Don't know the areas at all.
Cheers

Google only called up the Yarras near Bathurst, but there is another on the oxley highway west of Wauchope, shows on the google map but doesn't come up on the search.

Hi Full.
Wondered if you have made any progress on your McKANNA / McKENNA family. I would be interested to know if they were from around Bathurst, as they might have a link to my family.
Katharine.

Hi Katharine,
With the help of a very talented Rootschat team and the purchase of certificates we have been able to go back a bit from where we were:
Felix McKanna, occ Butcher, married Catherine Ford, Ireland.
Son: John McKanna b.1809 Armagh, Northern Island, occ Farmer. d.1863 Maitland NSW Australia
married (1st ) Ellen of Helen Caffrey b.1822 County Galway, Ireland. d.1858, Ravensworth NSW Australia.
They had 5 children:
Thomas b.1844 Port Macquarie, married Mary Carney & lived in the Grafton area.
John b.1846 Port Macquarie, married Sarah McPherson.
Catherine b.1846/48 Port Macquarie, married Hugh McPherson.
Laurence b.1849 Maitland, married Mary Ann McLennan & also lived in the Grafton area.
Helen b.1851 Port Macquarie, married John McLennan.
John's ist wife Ellen/Helen died in 1858 so John re-married in 1859 to Mary Macquarie b. abt 1837 NSW
They then had 3 children:
Margaret b.1859 Port Macquarie.
Charles b.1862 Yarras, NSW, married Annie Ada Francesca Beissel b.1864 New Zealand.
Mary b.1864 d.1864 Port Macquarie.
Katharine, I haven't found any link with Bathurst area, they seemed to mainly around the mid north coast of NSW, although I don't know where John 1846 and Sarah went.

Thank for that - doesn't look like it connects. Katharine.

Hi Rob,
Charles McKanna is my great great uncle.
I didn't know much about him or his siblings until earlier this year.
May I ask what your connection to him is?
kind regards
Robert

BTW, Yarras (previously known as Yarrows, was a property owned by Major Innes, before his financial problems) is located in the upper Hastings River valley.
Charles' maternal grandmother worked for Major Innes at his Lake Innes property.
Llanthony (a property located at Bagnoo & along the Hastings River), where Mary was working prior to marrying John McKenne/McKanna, was owned by the Browning family, friends of Major Innes.
