I am trying to trace the baptism of my g g grandfather-in-law Thomas Mitchell,a fisherman. The certificate of his marriage at Fairlight in 1845 states that he was the son of another Thomas Mitchell, also a fisherman. The 1861 census gives his age as 49 and says that he was born in Hastings, so he is probably the Thomas Mitchell who, according to the Burial Index, was buried at Hastings Cemetery in 1862 aged 50.
A member of the LDS has been tracing him too, and this has somewhat muddied the waters - the records submitted by LDS are conflicting (covering all bases I suppose).
There is also some debate in the family as to whether Thomas was related to Henry Mitchell, born 1820/1821 or whether they were in fact from quite seperate families.
Any help would be appreciated. We live at the other end of the country, and any visits to Hastings are totally taken up with current family business.

All are submitted IGI entries
Thomas MITCHELL Christening: 09 AUG 1815 Hastings, Sussex
Father: Thomas MITCHELL Mother: Jane RIDDLE
Henry MITCHELL Christening: 02 NOV 1821 Hastings, Sussex
Father: Thomas MITCHELL Mother: Jane RIDDLE
Whether it is the correct entry for your Thomas I can't say
Thomas MITCHELL Christening: 16 JUN 1782 Easebourne (?Eastbourne) Sussex,
Burial: 18 MAY 1860 Hastings, Sussex
Spouse: Jane RIDDLE Marriage: 03 FEB 1806 Easebourne (?Eastbourne) Sussex,

Thanks both of you. My problem with these records is that they all come up as "submitted by a member of the LDS Church", and I have found in the past that these records are not very reliable. There is also, funnily enough, the record of the birth of a Thomas Mitchell at Easebourne in 1812 to Thomas and Mary Mitchell, (also LDS, mind) so there were obviously a few Mitchells there.
I had assumed that Easebourne was Eastbourne, but having consulted a map I realise it is a village a fair way from Hastings. That doesn't rule out a link to the Hastings Mitchells, as a lot of young people were moving down to the sea from inland villages as a result of the agricultural depression of the early 19th century. (This happened with another of my mother-in-law's ancestors)
Good to hear from you Omega 1. I like the photo of Henry Mitchell in the Fisherman's Museum (We do manage to get there) - though that says, I think, he was born in 1818. My father-in-law was most definite that Henry and Thomas were not related, though how he could be so sure I don't know, since they weren't on his side of the family.
We have a copy of Thomas and Harriet's certificate, but I'll get in touch when I have a bit more time. (Rather a slow and careful typist - doing this sort of thing seems to take me ages)

James Thomas his son lived at Red Lake Ore and was a bricklayer he married Sarah An Realf in 1876. They had quite a few children too one being James who married Rosa Hyde in Hastings in 1897 they has 12 children.

The starting point has to be the marriage certificate of James Mitchell and Sarah Realf.
This reads:-
Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church, Oare (sic), August 7th, 1876
between
James Nelson Mitchell, 21, bachelor, labourer of Oare, son of Thomas Mitchell, fisherman
and
Sarah Ann Realf, 20, spinster of Oare, daughter of Thomas Realf, labourer.
One complication is that the birth registration for James Mitchell, son of Thomas Mitchell, former fisherman, August 4th 1855, simply calls him James, not James Nelson. He is however exactly the right age. Given the number of other people in the family with Nelson as their second name, he may have felt that he ought to have that family name and taken it for himself.

Hi I am going to be researching all weekend as my husband and youngest son are on scout camp so will get my tree out. Thank you Anne x
-
Should have added that my mother-in-law was the daughter of Rose/Rosa Mitchell and I also met Nellie's daughter, Edie.
-
Sorry. Have just realized that there were rather a lot of Roses in this story. It must the been the girl's name of the time. I was referring to the Rose and Nellie who were daughters of James and Sarah.
-
Oh wow we must try and get together so much to learn about my family X

Hi there
If it is any help to you - my great great grandfather was a Thomas Mitchell. He was born in 1812 in Winchelsea. On the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census he was described as either a Carpenter or a Builder but not a Fisherman! He died in 1862.
He married Mary Ann Rason on June 17th 1834 at Fairlight, Hastings.
I hope this helps - even if it only eliminates him from your research!
Regards
Ann
