Hi Pam

To help us help you better, what sort of info are you after? Do you have their children and census info for example. Are you trying to trace back James Paterson's line to his parents and siblings?

Monica  :)

Hi Monica,
James Patterson and Christain Munro were married in Cathcart June 9th,1826.
Children:
Eupheamea b. April 1, 1827 ( my paternal gg grandmother)
William b. Feb. 16, 1829
Alexander b. April 21, 1831
All born in Cathcart.

Know they were living in St. Johns NS Canada  in late 1830's

These records come from a family bible.

According to this source James Patterson's father was also named James
and was a Presbyterian minister & professor at the University of Edinburgh.

James father died at age 40.

I'm looking for census records and any information James Pattersons(b.1805) Parents and siblings.

Any help would be appreciated,
Pam

Hi Pam

Thanks for the background  :)

Just re-confirming the details of the births you have for James and Christian. These look to be the christenings from the Old Parish Registers (OPRs) which show on IGI at www.familysearch.org:

1. EUPHEMIA PATERSON  Christening: 22 APR 1827 Cathcart
3. WILLIAM PATERSON Christening: 22 MAR 1829 Cathcart
2. ALEXANDER PATERSON Christening: 12 JUN 1831 Cathcart

The originals from the OPRs are available to view on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, a pay to view site for OPR and BMD images (costs are reasonable). You might might get some clues from sponsors, relating to family, at the christenings for the children.

UK censuses for genealogy purposes only begin from 1841, after James and Christian were in Canada from what you have said which is a pity.

I am struggling to see James' birth/christing in East Kilpatrick on IGI (also checked on  Scotlands People). Christian Munro, I think, is more straightforward. This looks a possible entry for her christening:

CHRISTIAN MUNRO Christening: 07 JUN 1807 Cathcart, Renfrew
Parents: ALEXANDER MUNRO and EUPHEMIA MCCLELLAN

These names fit well with the names of James and Christian, linked to Scottish naming pattern.

Hi Monica,
Thanks for your help! I just contacted the gentleman that has the bible and he will check for any more on James Patterson. I'll let you know if he finds any more clues.
I'll check out the OPRs too.
Thanks again,
Pam

Hi Pam

Just a thought  ::)

James and Christian seem to have followed a form of Scottish naming pattern for their children. So far we have immediately following their marriage:

Euphemia - Christian's mother
William - ?
Alexander - Christian's father

Would be good to see what the gentleman who has the bible has to add  :) I am wondering whether James' father may have been called William rather than James. Just found this entry (submitted on IGI so would need to be verified elsewhere on records):

JAMES PATTERSON Christening: 24 FEB 1805 New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton
Parents: WILLIAM PATTERSON and KATHARINE BELL

This date matches what you have from the family bible, but it is a christening date not a birth date, and then the issue of father's name....

Monica,
I 'm thankful that my dad's side of the family kept to the Scottish naming pattern, it really helped in my research. Although at times it became a bit confusing so many Johns,Roberts,James and Williams!
Still waiting on more information on the Patterson Bible.

I really apreciate you taking the time to check further on James Patterson. :)

Monica,
I really think you are right about James father being William.
I emailed the man that has the bible and he is not sure about James being the father of James. The Bible has James Patterson's name in front.
I did some looking at the archives of  the University of Edinburgh and did find William Patterson in that time frame.
Any thoughts?

Whilst not being able to confirm James' father's name from the bible, what confirmation is there on father's occupation (you mentioned earlier he was possibly a Presbyterian minister & professor at the University of Edinburgh). Is this info also from the family bible or another source?

I assume that James's OPR marriage made no mention of father and with his early departure to Canada and young death, unlikely you will find verifiable sources there relating to his family. So, what info you have, such as potential occupation for James' father, may be key  :)

You could try following through on some of the children showing for a James Paterson and C(K)atherine Bell, the parents of the James we found earlier. This is what shows on IGI:

1. ISABELLA PATERSON  Birth: 12 MAY 1799/ Christening: 26 MAY 1799 Cadder Lanark
2. JOHN PATERSON Birth: 08 MAY 1801 Cadder, Lanark
3. WILLIAM PATERSON Birth: 23 APR 1803 Cadder, Lanark
4. JAMES PATTERSON Christening: 24 FEB 1805 New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton
5. REBECCA PATERSON Christening: 06 MAY 1807 New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton
6. JEAN PATERSON Christening: 22 MAY 1808 New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton

Only Isabella's christening entry shows as actual extract, the rest are all member submitted. I think some of these entries show on Scotlands People as actual extract, including a James. I searched mother's name as *ath* Bell to pick up on spelling variations. Also, it is a single 't' on Paterson on the search.

You may be lucky and find an occupation for the father William from the christening entries which would help.

Hi Pam

Just trying to find anything on the children of William Paterson and Catherine Bell. The only possible lead I can see at the moment is for their son William, chr/ 1803 in Cadder. I think he went on to marry a Margaret Walker and died in Kilmarnock in 1873. He looks to have been a Box & Trunk Maker by trade.

There is a short tree on Ancestry for William and wife Margaret. The only thing on parents William Paterson and mother Catherine Bell, is that father William Snr. is down as a school master (may be a link to the idea of a professor, but not so grand!). Source of the info is not given, but perhaps it has come from William Jnr's 1873 death cert.

The children of William Jnr and Margaret Walker, from IGI:

1. WILLIAM PATTERSON Christening: 29 DEC 1822 Cathcart, Renfrew
2. HELEN PATERSON Christening: 05 JUN 1825 Cathcart, Renfrew
3. CATHARINE PATERSON Christening: 04 MAY 1828 Galston, Ayr
4. THOMAS PATERSON Christening: 07 JAN 1831 Galston, Ayr
5. REBECCA BELL PATERSON Christening: 16 AUG 1833 Galston, Ayr
6. MARGARET PATERSON Christening: 28 JUN 1835 Galston, Ayr
7. JAMES PATERSON Christening: 04 FEB 1838 Galston, Ayr

Monica,
Emailed the man that has the Patterson Bible again. These records came from his in laws.
He is excited about  the William possibility and promised to go through boxes information again. Lets hope he finds more clues.
Once again thank you for all your help! I could not have found any of this with out you!  :)

Pam,
FANTASTIC news!!  I have found a gentleman in Scotland who is of this family!!! :) :)  Yes, William Paterson and Katherine Bell are the parents of James.   I have some info on sibblings now, and am working backwards.   Once I get it all together, I'll send it along to you.

Were it not for the internet and the posting of those Bible pages, I don't think I'd have ever fit this together, nor found the gentleman in Scotland (who is a 73yr old Paterson).  :)

More soon!
Gretchen

I am really pleased for both of you - that's a great result!

If you need to exchange any files or personal info, just click on the small green scroll under your names on the l/h side of your names to access the Private Message service (PMs). Works very much like email services with inbox/outbox. Good way (the only way!) to exchange personal emails.

Clever you Gretchen for finding the verification  :)
