Title: Thomas Francis Meagher - Alicia Quan
Post by: Moinear on Wednesday 05 May 10 23:18 BST (UK)
I wonder can anyone help me.  I have traced my family back to John Quann, born around 1790 in  Drumcannon near Tramore Co Waterford.

I note that Thomas Francis Meagher's mother is Alicia Quan (1798–1827), she was the second eldest daughter of Thomas Quan and Alicia Forristall.
Does anyone know where anything more about what part of Waterford these Quans were from? Or if she had brothers?

I have heard that there are not that many Quans in the Waterford area.  It would be fantastic if there was a connection.

Thanks, Moinear

This link in 2007 talked of Quan in Carrickbeg, Carrick-on-Suir, Co Waterford from 1799 onwards and The Quans who left Carrick in late 1800 who finished up in Chicago. Perhaps these are not your Quans but may be related. Thomas Francis Meagher is very well documented but noone goes further than his Mother with the ancestry. Noone documents any brothers or sisters for Alicia.

It would seem unlikely that early US records would show the actually place of birth, normally they just say Ireland.  ???

This article on the 100 year celebration of the Granville Hotel. Waterford refers to Thomas Francis Meagher and his Mother being a member of the Quan family.

Welcoming guests at the celebration included representatives from the Italian and American Embassies, Ken Power Historian with the Thomas ‘Francis’ Meagher society in the US and Christian Stevens a historian from Montana and now a lecturer at University College Galway.

Perhaps it could be worth contacting the Hotel or the people mentioned. ???

Apparently there is a book:-

THE IRISH GENERAL: THOMAS FRANCIS MEAGHER.  It is a complete biography, and goes into some of his family history. The book was published in September 2007

Thomas married Alicia Quan at her parents' residence that later became to be the Commin's Hotel. It was in this house that Thomas Francis Meagher was born to Thomas and Alicia on August 23, 1823.

Dettori28, Thanks for all those links.

I found somewhere that Alicia Quan was second eldest daughter of Thomas Quan & Alicia Forristall from Carrick on Suir, Co Waterford.

I have found pockets of Quans in Co Waterford.  There are a few families in the area of Carick on Suir & Tramore.  My Quans are from tramore, but I believe that they are all related, how far back I'm not sure. I'll keep looking...

Thanks again,
Moinear

Hi Moinear.

Sorry I was'nt able to help you with more definite information.  Alicia is always described as the second eldest daughter which would indicate there were more children but considering how well documented Thomas Francis Meagher was, there are no snippets of information that I could see regarding other members of her family. It is very unlikely that any further information would come from the USA in relation to this.  This is one of those queries that if we do find out any other information we would remember and come back to the thread but your enquiries are probably best placed in Ireland. Sorry.  :(

Hi Moinear,

My great Grandfather on my Dad's side was Michael Halligan.  He was from Co. Kilkenny and married to Mary Quann from Waterford.  He was also a ships carpenter.   I think they had seven children, two of which were born in the US.  I will need to ask my Dad for more details on Michael and Mary.

Best wishes,

Eireann.
