Title: 1891 Census Weston - BERE, WINDEATT, KING
Post by: windeatt on Saturday 26 March 05 12:39 GMT (UK)
In the 1891 census index there is a Corelli BERE listed in Somerset, aged 69 (i.e. born about 1821).   I am searching for a Corelli Ernest Bere WINDEATT in Somerset and am wondering if either (a) the 69-year-old Corelli BERE is someone that Corelli WINDEATT was named after or (b) just a mistranscription for Corelli WINDEATT who would have been about 21 at the time.

I haven't found a Corelli BERE in the 1891 - or anywhere else for that matter - so am wondering if he really existed.  I'd be grateful if someone could look him up in the full census and let me know what other details there are.

The WINDEATTs were living at 17 Burlington St., Weston Super Mare in 1881.  I haven't found them in 1891 either but do have other records.

Corelli and brother married a pair of sisters called KING.  They are a mystery too.

Hi

I have looked at 1891 for Corelli Bere and maybe it's my tired eyes but the only one I have found is 69 but was not in Somerset but born there.  He is living in Kensington with his wife Charlotte (also 69, born Kensington).  The transcription of place of birth is 'Wiveronmbe, Somerset'  ???  After attempting to read the image  :-\ I am guessing either Wiveliscombe or Winscombe.    In 1891 Weston living in Palmer Street, there is a Charles Windeatt(31) born Teignmouth, Devon.  I am guessing he could be a son of the Charles A Windeatt also born Teignmouth you have in Burlington St in 1881?

BTW it's a small world as I'm from Weston originally and my Dad grew up in Burlington Street  :)

Thank you so much for finding this for me.  I guess I made a mistake about him being listed as in Somerset - it must have been 'born there'.

Was there any other information about the 69-year-old Corelli BERE?  Like occupation?  My guy must surely have been named after this one - there can't be that many people around called Corelli . . .  no mind say Corelli BERE!

Thanks also for the information about the Charles who was living in Palmer St in 1891 - he was Corelli WINDEATT's older brother  - a carpenter who died of a fractured skull just a few years later in 1898.  Corelli himself was living in a Palmer Crescent in Kingson upon Thames in 1901.

Small world indeed.

Many thanks, Sandra

Well, after quite a bit of searching ,I found him in the 1881 and his name there is given as  Arcangelo C. C. BERE and the birthplace as Tiverton, Devon.   So I think the words that you found hard to read, Debbie, must have been 'Tiverton, Somerset' - the enumerator obiously made an error with the county.

This guy was obviously called after Arcangelo CORELLI and my guy was called after him.  Very curious . . .

Thanks again.
