Hi everyone,
need some help with Andrew. He was born 1894 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, parents Andrew and Joanna. They are on the 1901 Census ED 68, Page 9, Line 6.
In 1915 he enlisted in the Australian Army and died in 1918. (none of the papers on naa shows date of birth)
Is ist possible to find his birth date, mother's maiden name and when they migrated to Australia?

I think this could be them coming to Australia. Did he join up in Queensland?
Ship: Everton Grange
Port of Arrival: Brisabne
Deapted: Glasgow
date arrived: 30/01/1911
There are 2 Andrews (year of birth 1894 & 1871) and one Joan (year of birth 1876).

Thank you mosher,
he enlisted in Brisbane. Date of birth for Andrew sen. 1865 and the mother 1871 (1901 Census). It is possible there was other family with them. Brother Joseph and wife Christine also came to Brisbane.

It's a bit hard cos you can't see the acutal passenger list, but scanning through following pages of Clarks, there is a James on the same journey - yob 1898. Couldn't find a Joseph.
I don't know if you can access the passenger list through Queensland public records? This was on A.......y.

James is another child of Andrew sen. On the census his age was the same as Andrew jun.
I have an subscription to ancestry, but absolutely no experience with searches in Australia. Find my way around the naa, but that's all.
Thanks again,
Peonie

Hi Peonie,
Andrew Clark was born March 17th 1892 at 314 Great Eastern Road, Glasgow. He was the son of Andrew Clark, a warehouse packer and Joanna Clark m.s. [maiden surname] Dunn. They married June 12th 1891 in Glasgow. The birth was registered by father on April 6th at Glasgow.
The 1901 census does confirm an earlier birthdate for Andrew jnr.

According to the parents' marriage certificate, they indeed marry June 12th 1891 at 4 Broompark Terrace, according to the forms of the Free Church.
Andrew was 33, a warehouse packer and staying at 96 Gray Street, Glasgow. His parents were Andrew Clark, brass finisher (deceased) and Margaret Clark m.s. McCulloch.
Joanna was 31, a mantle worker and staying at 314 Great Eastern Road. Her parents were James Dunn, wood merchant and Ellen Dunn m.s. Hamilton.
They were married by John Hanson, minister, and witnesses were Joseph and Christina Clark.

Thank you very much hume. My friend will be thrilled when I tell her the good news. :) :)
I didn't know Scottish records are so detailed. Wish I would be so lucky with my Welsh records.

Oh me too Peonie! I am having to find a Jones who married a Price! With names like David, Thomas & Elizabeth, it is a nightmare! Why didn't they think to call their kids unusual names so we could find them?
-
Mosher, my problem are John and William, for generations the same names. I have just started to do the female lines and it seems they have been living within cooee of each other because they are all in the missing pages of the 1861 Monmouthshire Census.
Today I read a story of a small village in Germany on the net and found my father's family in there in 1639. It's really funny, because between 1830 and 1920 each generation moved to a different village. My mother's line, starting 1623 moved 1 km in 1801 and there they stayed.
Good luck, Peonie

Andrew stated on his enlistment papers (signed 8.10.1815) that he was 21 years 8 months old. From there we got the year 1894. To make sure we have given Andrew jun the right family could somebody please check if Joseph Clark and Andrew sen. have the same parents. Joseph married Christine Jack on 31.12.1886 in Crieff, Lanarkshire.
Thank you, Peonie

Hi Peoni
To be 100% certain, you will need to check the marriage entries on Scotlands People, the ptv site for Scottish BMDs.
There are these possible births showing for Andrew Snr and Joseph to parents Andrew Clark and Margaret McCulloch:
1. ANDREW CLARK Birth: 12 JAN 1865 Bridgeton, Glasgow
2. JOSEPH CLARK Birth: 20 SEP 1867 Bridgeton, Glasgow
A possible for this family in 1881:
Margaret Clark 38 b. Greenock Renfrewshire
Andrew Clark 16, Telegraph Messenger
Joseph Clark 13, Lemonade Van Boy
Christina Clark 9
Maggie Clark 4
Address: 15, Fairley St., Dennnistoun Glasgow
There is a Margaret Clark showing as sister to Andrew in the 1901 census so above census entry would be a good fit.

Hi Monica and Peonie,
Just to confirm Monica's census findings, I looked at the marriage certificate of Joseph Clark and Christina Jack. They indeed married December 31st 1886 at Crieff.
Joseph said he was 22 at the time (b. c. 1864) and stayed at Tibbermore. He was a ploughman. His parents were Andrew Clark (deceased), brass finisher and Margaret Clark m.s. McCulloch.
Christina was 23 and stayed at Crieff. Her parents were John Jack, a carter and Catherine Jack m.s. Cameron (deceased).
Witnesses to the marriage were Robert Jack and ? Grant.

That's great Hume :) All confirmed then. The 1871 census has Andrew and Joseph's father as born in Edinburgh and a brass finisher. Their father looks to have died between censuses, after sister Margaret's death (?).

In April this year, my husband and and I attended an ANZAC Day Service at a memorial to an Ändrew Clark". We were sure he was related as my husband's mother was a Clark and settled in this area when she arrived from Scotland.
A friend posted an enquiry on Rootschat for me and to my amazement we have been put in contact with a cousin in Scotland and many more in Australia.
We are ever so grateful for this contact and being able to tie together the family tree and would like to say a big "Thank You" to all those involved who gave of their time and effort.
Many thanks.

Hi all, I know I’m really late to the table but have recently discovered that I am related to Andrew Clark through his mother’s side. Joan Dunn was my grandmother (also Joan Dunn) aunt. My grandmother had a brother called Andrew Clark Dunn and I only just realised where that name came from. Anyway, if anyone is still reading this and would like more history on Joan (or sometime shown as Joanna Dunn) please get in touch and I can provide more info. I’m also interested to know about Andrew’s brother James and if there are any family. Thanks Angela.
