Is it to early to start talking about this?
It will certainly be on later this year, and, as stated in the thread WDYTYA - Rumours, it looks like two of the episodes will feature Konnie Huq and David Schwimmer. For all you daytime TV fans Richard Madeley has also definitely filmed an episode. But, that doesn't necessarily mean it will be shown. Just ask Michael Parkinson. :(
-
........... Richard Madeley has also definitely filmed an episode.
No doubt that will be one long plug for his book about his ancestry ::)
-
What happened to Michael Parkinson?! I thought I'd also seen a trailor on UK tv for the US version (would watch out of desperation) but I haven't seen it since, perhaps I was just dreaming?! ::)

Apparently they film up to 12 episodes, or start filming, but any that are either not interesting or the subject matter has been covered before, they drop!
-
Charming!
-
If they don't want to show these "uninteresting" episodes in the series why not show then on BBC 4 or something ?
-
Well, thank goodness! I was beginning to think WDYTYA was another one of those programmes the BBC had quietly 'dropped'. It seems absolutely ages since the last series (or perhaps I've just got withdrawal symptoms!).
I've just read in an article in the Radio Times about Richard Madeley that they're doing a WDYTYA programme on him - should be interesting. I know he gets a lot of stick - what with the whole Richard & Judy thing - but he seems a nice bloke.
Who on earth is Konnie Hug? Never heard of him (her?). Still, they're sometimes the best programmes!!
I also thought I'd read that the BBC were going to show some of the US WDYTYA progs. I had a vague idea April was mentioned - probably put back by this bl....y election!! They really should get their priorities right!! ;)
Jill
-
Konnie Huq (a girl ;)) was a presenter on Blue Peter for years ;D
-
That explains it then!
Last time I watched Blue Peter, John Noakes was still telling Shep to get down!!
With a name like Konnie Hug - are we talking trips to faraway places?

Yep Konnie Huq is an Asian girl(I think) born in Hammersmith ;D ;D
She is the longest serving female BP presenter apparently.

Konnie Huq was born in Hammersmith and brought up in Ealing.
Dunno if she would describe herself as "Asian" - her parents are Bangladeshi.

From memory, WDYTYA is normally on around June. The election and the World Cup are playing havoc with the normal state of play (The Apprentice, for instance - normally March to May - has been recorded, but can't be shown due to the political inclinations of the Main Man).
Hibee
-
WDYTYA tends to like to have a few celebs whose ancestry orginated from abroad.
Junior Apprentice starts the week after next, with Alan Sugar and his side kicks (sadly not Margaret as she has retired).

WDYTYA often have episodes on the shelf which are carried forward for another series. I believe Kevin Whately's had been "shelved" for several series before being shown.
What I would like to see is one episode per series of an ordinary person getting the same kind of access that the celebs get. Rather on the lines of "So You Think You are Royal". Possibly through a competition.
And although Parky had no interesting ancestors, all miners & ag labs it would have been good to see how they dealt this this ordinary history which is reminiscant of so many of ours.
Some years ago I contacted the Goldsmiths Company regarding records of "Goldbeaters" to be told that they had nothing that could help me as goldbeaters were not really craftsmen!!
Lo and behold up pops Kensit (oh let me find another pop star to marry!) and the Goldsmiths Company were brownnosing to the point of obscenity to help and they found they record that I had been told they did not keep. As you can tell I was not impressed!!
Welsh TV has done some good half hour programmes which have popped up on the history chanel, and one of those was Susan Sarandon, which begs the qeustion why do her again for the US WDYTYA?
Also maybe us the viewers could be asked to nominate a famous person who we would like to see (and no I am not asking for suggestions here!!) and if that person was agreeable a special could be done for the viewers.

Hi,
Monty Don was being filmed at Scotland's General Register House about three weeks ago when I was last in. They said it was for the American series ?
Regards
Ron
-
Would Monty Don be that well known in the US?
-
They have been filming around the Benllech area Anglesey for the next series knowbody could find out who it was for, top secret
-
Apparently the BBC were due to show the US version about now but they have shelved it indefinitely, so God knows when we will see it!
-
I've just read something in next week's Radio Times letter page.
It looks as if the BBC do NOT have the rights to the US version - apparently the digital channel Watch has the rights and will probably be showing the programmes in the autumn.
The new BBC series of WDYTYA is scheduled for this summer and includes Richard Madeley (as we knew) and Alexander Armstrong.
Jill
-
Hope I don't miss any, I'm away 18 June to 9 July.
-
Lol Alex Armstrong? It's not this version is it? ;D

What a swizz! I was looking forward to that. ???
-
I have read a review in one of the family history magazines of the US series, and the review said that although it was good, too much emphasis was put on Ancestry (who apparently sponsor this series) thus making it a very commercial programme. And it was thought that although good, not as good as ours. Moving at a much faster pace. So again this would make newcommers think that researching is quick & simple.
-
WDYTYA certainly has a following among family history enthusiasts in Australia
Could not the producers do any ordinary person and so promote genealogy and family history to all ?
I think we would be greatly encouraged to see just how long and difficult the research is and the pure delight when we unearth a 2nd or 3rd cousin by sheer accident!
My past family, totally unremarkable, has uncovered fascinating stories
This must be true for many others
Looking forward to seeing the new series

i think what people forget is that the producers make these progs to sell to tv channels. they need appeal to a large audience. shows about nobodies, while they might be good for the family history gang would not appeal to the vast majority of people. they are not here to promote genealogy but to make money.
-
In the recent WDYTYA magazine there was an article on the US series; it said there was much more music and bits where they recapped things because of the ads, a lot of the music was removed for the UK version as were the recaps.
I am surprised that considering the growth of the family history interest that there isn't much on TV about it, its fine showing the ressults and how famous people get access to the experts in particular areas (ok I should say the programme makers get access) but for the regular (and irrregular) person in the street we need to move away from the more obvious sources (censuses, BMD indexes, parish records) as helpful as they are its the other sources that are the goldmines I think.
-
Well at least we all have here ;D
-
According to a line I spotted in the Sunday Express today Bruce Forsyth has also filmed an episode and was 'Fascinated by his findings' ...................... it was a one line note at the end of an article about 'Strictly' so not a lot of info apart from that.
-
Does this mean that BBC haven't aired the US version with Sarah Jessica Parker etc?
I have just watched it on RTE, Ireland's National Channel.
-
Does this mean that BBC haven't aired the US version with Sarah Jessica Parker etc?
Yes, it looked like they pulled it for some reason.
-
... Some years ago I contacted the Goldsmiths Company regarding records of "Goldbeaters" to be told that they had nothing that could help me as goldbeaters were not really craftsmen!! ...
I have to say that my experience with the Goldsmiths Company was quite different. When I enquired if they had any information about an ancestor, the librarian replied with 2 pages of details she had extracted from their archives, in fact everything she could find about several members of my family over many years, including one who ended his days as a pensioner in their almshouses.
I can't praise her highly enough :)

As a family history enthusiast I would love to hear the ordinary people's stories but totally take on board the opinions here about the fact that celebrities stories pay the bills for the tv company.
But look at Heir Hunters on BBC - that has interesting stories about non famous people. But that's because the research is done by an existing company chasing the estate money. So TV company films it cheaply.
I guess it's the research time and expertise that costs the money. However, look at all the expertise on this and other sites - surely that could be harnessed in some way to make programmes. Loads of people - not just those who do the research themselves are interested in Family History.

You experience highlights the vagaries of this game.
It must come down to who you speak to. I dealt with a man, who was quite frankly just this side of rude and condescending about my g/grandfathers occupation.
Think I will try again in the week, you never know, I might have more luck 2nd time round.

The Sarah Jessica Parker episode is on BBC One next Sunday (the 13th ) at 9.15pm.
;)
-
Is that the woman from Sex and the City? ::)
-
Oh yes :)

dont expect the same as the uk episodes
-
and a forewarning....count how many times the word...Un. Believ. Able is used! ::) ::)
However, the one of Susan Sarandon was a LOT better.
-
Just seen the American episode with Sarah Jessica Parker and 'Blimey' how 'unbelievable'y boring and OTT acting!

UN BE LIEVABLE!!!
she doesn't lift a finger to find any records and gets back to the pilgrim fathers via the salem witch hunts and the gold rush
I never knew genealogy could be so mindlessly easy and personally unrewarding
pah >:(
-
hee...yes...I knew the Un. be. LIEVABLE would be commented on. Really bad that show...the next one is better...Susan Sarondon (sp?) is a bit more genuine...and she gets her son to look up records for her! ;D
-
God I hope they get better.
Not a fan of S&TC, never likely to be after that little charade.
It's just like WOW. OH. MY. GOOOODDD! UN. BE. LIEVE. ABLE.
Yeah, that's how I felt too.
Interesting subject matter though, the gold rush and the Salem witch trials. But I prefer our theme tune.
-
I didnt realise it was going to be a US version. Why do they try and fix something that ain't broke! Oh well it can only get better from there (or can it!).
Dee

I thought the actual history and what they found for her was great and perhaps it is just me I thought her reactions were not to bad after all Americans are not as reserved as us Brits !
-
Here, here Alan
Just watched it on BBC IPlayer and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not a fan of her, but I thought she came across well and was very enthusiastic.
The Gold Rush & Witchhunts very interesting. Her family history was already mapped out to a great degree already. She had the early settlers and Matthew Pinsent & Boris Johnston have royalty.
Best Regards
Ron

Now there's an understatement ;D she got on my nerves, and did we really need the close up of her Chanel shoes ::)
Subject matter was interesting but I could have cheerfully throttled her by the end of the programme.
-
she got on my nerves, and her Chanel shoes ::)
I could have cheerfully throttled her
Happy murderess kills Yank over shoes !
-
Just caught up with it.
She wasn't THAT bad.....expected the worst, but definitely not as bad as that.
Looking forward to a more laid back Susan Sarandon.
;)
-
This got turned on by accident after the footy. There was a race to find the remote control to switch her off. Couldn't be putting up with all that inane squealing. ::)
-
I wonder if that is her real personality?!

WDYTYA 9 Announced...
Bruce Forsyth, Rupert Everett, gardener Monty Don and singer Jason Donovan, Rupert Penry-Jones and wife Dervla Kirwan (single episode it seems), Alan Cumming and comedy actor Alexander Armstrong
supposed to be 9 episodes...not sure who the other two, being shown from end of July (probably as I thought after WDYTYA USA)
-
Really looking forward to Alexander Armstrong.

Does anyone know if the UK are going to get to watch more of the US episodes? If so when are they on?
I recorded Sarah but my series link is not showing any other episodes - is it a faulty series link or do can we not look forward to more episodes?
-
The first thing I did when I got the RT this week was flick to Sunday to see who was next - nope, not there :'(
Looks like it's set to be one of those magical disappearing programmes the BBC are so fond of - one that magically reappears again when there's a hole in the schedule because the tennis was rained off or somethng >:(
-
Would anyone in UK know if Ronald PICKUP is going to be on Who Do You Think You Are ?
He may be my only hope of finding my elusive PICKUP family from Lancashire ?
With hopeful thanks

Always have enjoyed this programme and was excited to see a new series announced. Wasn't overly impressed with the 'gushy' reaction of the SJP to her discoveries and I was fully expecting to have a Hollywoodesque-style ending of her and her mother falling sobbing into each other's arms artfully caught in silhouette through the window as she went to tell her all. Oh well. I'm not sure I fully understand either her announcement at the end of the programme that now knowing all this made her feel like an American as she was given clear proof that some of her ancestors came from England. Some of the people done in earlier series were very interesting though so I will continue viewing in the hope that who comes next proves just as entertaining.

WDYTYA 9 Announced...
Nice selection of celbs and all bar the last one I have actually heard off.

Jason Donovan is the son of Australian actor Terence Donovan from England, who also appeared in Neighbours as Doug Willis; and his mother is Sue McIntosh.
Does anyone know about the ancestry of Terence Donovan and Sue McIntosh? Supposedly Jason Donovan is descended from the Menlove family from Petton in Shropshire, but I'd like to know how. Supposedly they're going to crop up in his episode, so I guess I'll have to wait and see since I can't find anything online.
