Hi, I'm looking for information on my great great granddad Thomas Wilkinson. He was born in Northumberland between 1858 and 1962. On the census he states he was born in Seghill. Also from the census I have found his Mother was Harriet from Barnsley and he moved to west riding of Yorkshire (the present South Yorkshire region). If anyone has any information as to where I could find anything out about his time in Northumberland I would be very greatful especially his baptism record.

Hi there and welcome to Rootschat! Could you let us know what information you have on him already? (I can see some possibles in the census but it's a common name so we want to be sure we're tracking the right one).
e.g. On which censuses have you found him, where and with who?
Where did you find his mother's name and do you know when she was born?
Do you have his marriage certificate or birth certificate and what information is on those documents?
If you have his marriage certificate, was he married in a CoE church?
-
Ok,
From the 1881 census I know he was born in Seghill and he was 21 and living in Barnsley. On the 1891 census he's still in barnsley and his Mum Harriet aged 57 born in barnsley is living with him. From his marriage certificate from barnsley is father is Joseph Wilkinson deceased who is a chimney sweep. I'm really looking for his birth and him on the 1861 census.

Sorry should have said he was married in Barnsley register office but probably as he and his wife already had a daughter

Hi,
What do you think of this?
According to Genuki HAMPOLE was in the Extra-Parochial places for the West Riding of Yorshire, (this might be important later on) and it was about 3.5 miles from South Kirby.

This could be a total red herring but some of the details match so well I thought it worth mentioning.

Thos HEEL Boarder Un 23 Miner Yorkshire Wisboro Common

The Surname is hard to read I've written it as I see it but it could possibly be WESTHELL or similar.
I wonder if Joseph WILKINSON died and Harriet moved in with Thomas WROTHWELL, times must have been really hard for a miner's widow then maybe it was her best option. I can't see a marriage and I can't see this family after this. Then she reappears as WILKINSON in 1891.
Seghill was in the Tynemouth registration district and I found this death, but I can't find a burial so don't know how old he was.

Lots of maybes and possibles ::) :D

Excellent work Daisy and Jorose!
The IGI has this Marriage;
George STEEL
Leah HOUSLEY
01 February 1825, Ecclesfield, Yorkshire
Christening;
Leah HOWSLEY, 01 May 1808, Ecclesfield, Yorkshire
Father, MATHIAS
Unfortunately I cannot find Leah/George in 1851 to confirm their POB.

The Addy family and some of the Steels also lived in Wombwell - Harriet's father George Steel, with Jane and John are there in 1861.
On the image Thos "Heel" aged 23 looks like "Steel" to me, and he fits with the age of Thomas Steel who Thomas Wilkinson lived with in 1871.
Thomas Steel and Selina Wyatt married in 1861 but not until after the census.

Hi Dalton Barnsley.
Small world isn't it. My Great Grandma was Gertrude or Great grandma Gert as I knew her. If you go to:
http://www.cemeteries.org.uk/ and pay for credits you get 50 for £3.50 and they last a week you'll find the burial records for the Wilkinson family and many of the Jessop family. Its an excellent site and has filled in many blanks for me.
Great to know there are more members of the family looking for them.

My dad,s brother remembers Gertrude very well. she moved from Eastwood working mens club and he thinks moved to Wortley. i remember my dad also saying he stayed with her on several occasions.
we was wondering if you still live local if you would be prepared to meet up in a pub or a libary maybe. we have a lot of info we could give you. including grave information on Thomas Wilkinson.
