Title: Electoral Rolls Look Up - NICOL, William
Post by: kaths2010 on Tuesday 04 May 10 12:38 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,
I am not sure what information is needed for an Electoral roll look up but here goes.
I am searching for addresses for a William Nicol for the period between 1892 and 1914.

In 1892 he was living at 3 Little Selwyn St Paddington when his wife, Margaret died .
He remarried in 1893 and his 2nd wife's name was Hilda.
By 1914 he was living at 100 Carabella St Kirribilli. He may have been living in Mosman prior to that.  He was born in Scotland in 1858 and came to Australia in 1880 if that is of any use.
Thank you

Hi Kath,
I think the only roll available would be the 1903 one. There are rolls from 1903 to 1954.
There are CDs available at most libraries and you only need the name to find a person, but his age would sort him out from any others with the same name.
There are several people who have the CDs here but the two most active are not on at present. You might have to wait a day or two.

Leonie.

Only one in Paddington in 1903.

New South Wales Electoral Roll
1903  Wentworth/Paddington
NICOL William  Zoological Gardens, Paddington   Dealer

No enrolment for a Hilda in 1903.

Do you know his occupation?

Cheers
Cando

Thanks Cando
I doubt that's him somehow. He was a ships engineer and worked for the Australian Steam Ships till around 1902 then for Port Jackson and Manly SS till he died. I guess there is a very very small possibility he was a "dealer" in between the two jobs but I really doubt it.

Were there any entries around the lower north shore area - Mosman, Kirribilli, Neutral Bay etc?

Hi

The few SANDS DIRECTORIES I am able to see do not list anyone by that the name.

There are some with the spelling NICHOL which I will type up if you think of use.

Hi Sparrett,
I've looked through the Sydney city Assessment book for that period for Nicol and Nichol and didn't find anything that matched.
I think Sands for Paddington Surry Hills area and Lower North Shore might be worth a look if you hve access to those but I wouldn't go any further than that.  In regard to Sands though, given they cover a greater period, his wife up until 1892 was Margaret then he married Hilda in 1893.

The spelling is a pain. He was definitely a Nicol but even on the shipping lists it's shown as Nicol on one and Nichol on the other. Both spellings were common and it depended on the experience of the writer. ( bit like my name with C and K). His full name was William Alexander.

Thanks Sue I'll add those in to my info and see where they lead.

The other option I have is the birth certificates of the children of the 2nd marriage but that gets a bit expensive, particularly as I'm really only interested in the address. Guess I could get a transcript service and only ask for minimal data which is a bit cheaper.

Yes, the specific data only option is a good one, but one feels slightly tantalised by those other items on the certificate which are witheld.

I would find it hard not to go the "whole hog"

But that would be me all over unfortunately :(

;D  sounds familiar! there just might be one more word that will solve all those mysteries...

.....walk slowly away from the Transcription site
