Title: Legacy deluxe Version 7.4.038
Post by: Redroger on Monday 03 May 10 21:01 BST (UK)
When I tried to access a tree tonight I found I was quite unable to do so. After going onto their website there is a new version 7.4.039 which I am now downloading. I do not think I'm the only sufferer as I am getting a download speed of approx 4KB per second, this on my 10MbPS broadband. A speed test has shown my system is functioning normally so I think the site is extremely busy, probably with other sufferers like me. Anyone else had the same problem. It shows as Runtime error, like the onlder versions but now can't access the program at all.

Roger - I haven't had any problems with 7.4.0.38 so I wouldn't think it is Legacy itself that is the problem.  I decided against downloading 7.4.0.39 because I really couldn't be bothered to customise everything again.

Lizzie

ps.  No, no problem.  I had Legacy open, so I thought I'd close it and re-open to see what happened.  It just opened as normal.

Thanks Lizzie, My download says it has just completed, so will now open it and see what if any difference it makes. Keep you posted.

Just opened it OK, but noticed that for some weird reason it has opened in the standard edition, and in an earlier version of L7. Very strange.

Perhaps you should re-boot your PC and see what happens.  Can't think what has gone wrong.

Lizzie

ps.  Hope you had a back up of your latest tree.

Yes Lizzie, I have a current backup. I intend to do a reboot later when I have caught up with the postings to see what happens.

Update: Last night I went onto the Legacy website and tried to download the current version. To confirm it was not this (elderly) laptop I also attempted a download on my netbook. I got similar results with both machines, a download speed of a few KBs. When I had finished on Rootschat, I rebooted my machine to see whether that made any improvement. No, I could still open the program but only in the standard edition, together with a note that I was using the wrong language version. Later I sucessfully downloaded the version 7.4.039 update, which has been installed and so far has given no problems. I wonder if I should tell Legacy about these problems? Advice needed please.

I wonder if you shouldn't be talking to Legacy direct ???

http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Help.asp

I also wondered whether this advice might be relevant:

Quote
Note: This update will result in serious problems if installed over Legacy 2.0 and overwrite Legacy 3, 4, 5 and 6 Deluxe with Legacy 7.4 Standard Edition. (The Deluxe features will no longer be available.) If you are using the Deluxe Edition of an earlier version, you will need to buy the Legacy 7.4 Deluxe upgrade if you wish to continue using your deluxe features. Special upgrade prices for Legacy 6.0 Deluxe users are available by visiting: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DeluxeUpgrade.asp

There are various help pages - in fact heaps of them - on the link above.  Does any of them assist at all?

Clicking a link also brings up support email addresses and an American phone number.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks for that Arran, I had seen that, but am quite certain that I did not instal Legacy until around 2005, at or around version 4. Strangely however, I find that there 2 Legacy2 files 2.dbm and 2.usr in my folder. Though it now seems OK with .39 I think I will talk to Legacy about this.

If you make copies of your Legacy "data", "backup", pictures and videos folders then you could delete everything in the general Legacy folder and start again.

My woes as well.  Had a perfectly functioning deluxe version 7 of Legacy and updated because advice was that 7.4 would fix "some problems"(ones I wasn't aware of).........now have all of the problems listed on this board.
1. The language file Legacy7.lng is the wrong version.

Expected Version:  28 Apr 2010  07:45:41
Your Version:  25 Mar 2010  15:32:14

To fix this problem you should re-install Legacy.  Go to our web site and click on any of the download links to get the latest version:
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com

2. Can't install it again because my computer says I have the latest 7.4 version.

3. Error message says "not installed properly".  So I say yes then..........See #2.

4. If I bypass error message, I get this one:  "Error searching for Relationship record.
Error 3800: 'IRIDBloodKindLen' is not an index in this table.
Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?"

5.  I now have a non functioning Standard version of 7.4.  Not impressed.

2. Can't install it again because my computer says I have the latest 7.4 version.
So back-up your data etc, uninstall Legacy completely, re-boot and then start again

Though my 7.4.039 was OK last time I was on my old laptop. When I transfer my files to the new machine I am on nopw, this is how I intend to tackle the problem, by a full complete reinstall.

Fortunately have an auxiliary hard drive with data & media files backed up with version 7 as they represent a decade of work PLUS a 2nd backup to dvd.......just a bit retentive.  Don't  think a back up after the fact would be a good thing as data as well as program probably corrupted on main hard drive.  Sent my problem to Legacy's tech dept. 2 days ago.  Still waiting for reply so assume there are many of us out there.  Don't know if I want to do a square 1 install to latest version.  My board question is to those of you who had successful download of upgrade,.....do you think new advancements worth it or should I just be happy to reload proven version 7? Never would I trust my living individuals to a genealogy program where at home "stand alone" files could be accessed electronically in a reciprocal manner as I suspect the next generation update will be "all about". Ability to flag files "private" or no.

In the download area menu, choose download update. Instead of download Legacy. That will allow you to download Legacy without having to pay again. Save the downloaded file to your computer and then run the program to reinstall Legacy. Your deluxe features will be retained.

I downloaded the update 7.4.0.38 without any problem, but I don't think I  will have much use for the advancements, at least not until we can access Familysearch properly.

The first update I downloaded, which I think was 7.4.0.37 had a problem in that the font sizes wouldn't stay fixed, I thought it was my laptop and tried everything I could to get the font sizes as I like them.  A few days later, I got details of another update, putting right the glitches in the original update, which included the problem with the fonts  ::)  I downloaded the update of the update and everything was fine, apart from the index which I have customised and which reverted to default, I had to re-customise but this happened with the last update, so I knew how to do it quite quickly.  I know there is now another update, but I've not bothered with that.  I have 7.4.0.38.

I seem to have resolved my problems on this computer, Legacy7.4.039 is working OK. However I have just requested assistance from Legacy to download the Deluxe version of 7.4.039 onto my new Windows 7 laptop, making a clean installation. I followed instructions, but my customer number won't work to make it the deluxe edition as I bought the deluxe as version 6 and have since upgraded. Will keep readers posted.

What I ended up doing (at my significant other's suggestion and with assistance from) was to restore Vista computer back to day before I did bad update instead of following tech from Legacy's instructions (too many places for me to go wrong!).  I was then able to do a successful upload (with my Legacy file open & from the "Legacy Home" tab (which of course had reverted back to time prior to bad Legacy download,  and now have my Deluxe features restored.  In addition, now have a version 7.4.0."39".  Thank you for input.

Now have email from Legacy which I think will resolve the problem and I post the gist here so that others may avoid the trap; apparently Legacy customer numbers are edition specific, so when doing upgrades it is essential to use a current customer number for a successful upgrade, not tried it yet though, but will make a further post if any problems.

Glad I didn't have a problem, I don't understand the answer  ???   I've never been asked for a number, customer number or not, when doing an upgrade and if customer numbers are edition specific, where would you get a current customer number from?

You only need a customer number if you use the deluxe version of Legacy

I have got the de-luxe version, but still managed to download the upgrade without being asked for a customer number.

I think the cause of this Lizzie was due to my doing a clean instal on a new Windows 7 laptop.

all seems OK now.
