Hi
Can anyone help please?
My husbands granddad was William MONTEITH - dob 11 feb 1875.
He was born in Ireland - possibly the Castlederg / Strabane area. Can anyone clarify this please?
His father = James MONTEITH (? 1846 dob but may be looking at wrong person).
We've been told that James's wife = Matty (Martha) KANE but research to date suggests Matty was married to somebody else.
We'd also like help confirming William's siblings. Info to date:
Annie dob 1/4/1880 who later emigrated to Canada
David (? b. 1885)
Jack (dob n/k)
Elizabeth / Lizzy dob 26/5/1889
twins - Martha & Andrew (? 1893)
Another brother - ? Robert / James / Edward
The family was Protestant.
All information gratefully appreciated!

A James Monteith and Martha Kane had 3 children listed in IGI (www,familysearch.org):
1. John Monteeth born 11 Aug.1873 Co. Tyrone
2. James Monteith born 12 Mar.1877 Strubane [Strabane]
3. Ann Monteith born 2 June 1879 Shubane [Strabane]

Thank you for this.
However, I'm not sure if its the same family as Annie's obituary stated her dob as 1/4/1880
Apparently, Martha died giving birth to the twins (c. 1893).
James then married Ann COOPER in 1894.
Over the next 30 yrs most of the family moved to North Wales / Cheshire.
If it helps, I also believe members of the family were in the Innis Fuseliers and / or the Postal service (rural postman / telegraphman)

All information gratefully received .........

Hi,
There is a record of a marriage of James Monteith and Martha KEAN in Castlederg Church of Ireland on 11 Jun 1872. Could be the parents mentioned by Aghadowey above.

Kingskerswell and Aghadowey
Thanks for this.
Apologies for the next few Qs but not sure how things work re Irish research / records.
Even though the dates for Annie don't match with info from her obituary I think this must be the correct family (too coincidental re Martha's name & the names of known children).
IGI normally records baptisms but these are shown as births - do you know which of these Irish churches normally record?
Other children - we believe there are about 8 children (3 of whom have been found on IGI). Any ideas how we could find out more about the others?
Marriage - who could I contact to get a copy of the marriage certificate?
We live in England so are currently researching via the web (but hope to visit Ireland later on when we know which places to visit)

The IGI has many, not all, extracted Irish birth records 1864-c1882 taken from civil registers.

Hi folks
I've now got a copy of the above marriage certificate. Interestingly Martha's surname on the main part of the certificate is KEAN but somebody has written her name next to her mark as KANE. The marriage was also witnessed by James KANE who signed his own name. Not sure who James is yet (not dad as he is listed as William).
James and Martha's residence at the time of marriage are listed as Pullyamin and Kilcroagh respectively. I've found Kilcroagh as a District of Castlederg but cannot find Pullyamin - where is it? Could it be a barracks as James's profession is shown as a soldier.
Martha's dad's profession is shown as farmer. I've looked on the griffiths valuation and found a William Kane at Kilcroagh, Urney, Tyrone. This seems likely given Martha's residence = Kilcroagh. The valuation sheet states plot 13b. Is this the plot shown as 13 on the map? Cavan Road / next to the large P in Part?

Cheers

Hi,
Probably PULLYERNAN, a townland near Castlederg.

Hi,
I have also had a look at your Griffith reference and you are correct. On the map the thick red line is the border of the townland and the thin red line is the border of the land which John Johnston rented from the Rev. John Bagot, possibly part of the church Glebe. John Johnston also rented two houses as well as barns etc (Offices). He let one of these houses to William Kane who may well have been one of his farm labourers. One of the black dots within the red boundaries, along the Cavan Road, would have been William Kane's house, 13b.

Interestingly 1 of the witnesses at the marriage of James & Martha = David Johnston. Wonder if he is related to John Johnston at all?
-
Hi,
Did you see the Monteith holding in the townland of Pullyernan in the Griffiths valuation?
Regards
-
This looks promising - especially as James's father was called Robert Monteith !
I know I'm looking for plot 11 but which 1 is it? Zooming in takes me to plot 31. Is it the one by the 2nd L in Pullyernan? Which is sheet 15 and 16?
Robert's occupation on James wedding certificate is labourer but we're sure he was involved in farming.
Thank you

Hi,
Yes that is the Number 11 in Pullyernan It is bounded on the south by Pullyernan Road which runs from Castlederg to the border with the Republic of Ireland. This can be clearly seen on Google maps if you enter Castlederg United Kingdom. You can also see how close ir is to Cavan Road.

My grandmother was Martha (twin of Andrew) married to Hugh Mungle who lived in Linlithgow then Blackridge

Hi Blackridge
Apols, have had a break from family history for a while.
I believe Martha & Hugh had 12 children - who are you descended from?
Would be good to know if have any more info on the Monteith's.
