Our ancestor William Linington was born and baptised in Swanage in 1786, married there in 1808, but all of his children were baptised in the Roman Catholic church in East Lulworth - and he himself was also baptised in this Catholic church in 1815. (I`ve taken all this info from LDS and the wonderful Dorset Online Parishclerk site).
I understand that the Roman Catholic church at Lulworth was the first to be built since the Reformation.
Can anyone give me any more background information?
Thanks in advance - Jane

Hi I have a copy of The diary of Henry Rolls He was a shoemaker in East Lulworth He kept a diary of the goings on in the village: births death marriage baptisims floods in fact if it moved he wrote about it! from 1803 to 1877 After his death his wife and later still his daughter kept up the journal. it has 111 pages but I will have a go at trying to and find ant refs to your ancestor. jo

BIG correction I ment to write Henry Rolls lived in east lulworth from 1803 to 1877 his journal starts around 1824 There are some refs to the catholic church bear with me and I will let you have all thats relevant. sorry for the mistake. Were you ancestors Lennington? JO
-
Jo - thanks for replying.
The family are Linington though it is sometimes transcribed as Lennington. Our ancestors are William and his wife Clara - they lived in Swanage but had 13 children all baptised at the Roman Catholic church in East Lulworth between 1809 and 1833, and as I mentioned before, William was baptised there himself when he was an adult. At least one of his sons became a master mason so it`s possible William was too.
Looking forward to hearing from you but please don`t go to too much trouble

The Roman Catholic Chapel on the Weld's Lulworth Castle estate is still in use.
There is also a Catholic Church that was built in Wool after an annulment. St Josephs.
Joseph Weld was a fine man, he cared for his workers and was well respected.

I totally agree, reading the journal of Henry Rolls is full of good deeds made by the Weld family. He paid for one of my ancestors to travel with his family to America. Jo.

I thought you might be interested - Making History on Radio 4 12/10/10 had a short piece on Catholics at Lulworth.

Jethrop,
Does that offer extend to other East Lulworthians? Parts of my family - Whittles, Balsons come from that way.
