Do you have their death certificates? This should show their parents.
Which state in Oz did they come to?
I found this on ancestry (Scotlands People would give you the original image)

thankyou for your immediate reply. i have just found out about Rootschat and i think it will be very valuable.
Both my grandparents died in Victoria, Australia. do you think i should still source their death certificates ?? and do you think they would have their parents info? as they both left Scotland many years ago.
Your information is very similar to what i have on the Murray side
Daniel Lewis ( sometimes called Donald ) b: 12 Jan 1860 - Stornorway @ 8am
married Catherine Mciver b: 17 Feb 1866 - Greenock - 38 Crawford St @ 1am - who died in her 40's Daniel then remarried Mary..they had no children. The family home was 9 Newton Street Stornoway.
12 children - Donald the oldest ( my grandfather )- moved to Australia, Roddie ( possibly Roderick )- moved to Canada he was the youngest. 10 in between in no particular order. Alexander, Malcolm, John ( went to USA ), Agnes, Stewart, ( lived in Greenock & married Bessie ) Robert, Catherine ( possibly called Kate ) DOD 1940 had a son called Donnie Manson and at last report lived in Alness, another Roderick ( died as an infant ), Nancy - moved to Australia, unknown.
This information was obtained from a cousin of my mother, living in Canada ( daughter of Roddie )..unfortunately she has no more information and has nothing on th McBride side.
If you know of anythong else or guide me it would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi
If the family I found is yours then Donald born c1894/5 is not the eldest of Donald and Catherine's children.
The family has also been out of the country once - to USA where Donald was born c1894/5.
I haven't found any shipping records for them, in or out of the UK to US, yet.
I haven't looked for their entry in to OZ yet.
Scotlands People is a pay per view site, google it, or there is a link from Findmypast.
If you go to this site and follow the links to Historical research you can access BDM's for Victoria and download, for a small fee, the information you need
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au
I have no experience of Vic certificates but if they are like the NSW ones , depending on the knowledge of the informant, they can give parents of the deceased names, children's names (both living and dead) how many years in Australia and where from.
I am sure that there will be people coming along to help, with far more knowledge than me, shortly.

Hi,
Wondering how i can find information of when Donald & Marion (nee McBride )Murray migrated to Australia. All i know is that they travelled approx 1925 with 5 young children to Australia.
Also any information of Roderick Murray - Donald's brother to Canada, i think Canada was around 1938.
Thanks

Hi
There is a pay per view site called findmypast.co.uk which has information on passenger lists leaving the uk from 1890,which Crisane has mentioned in earlier posts.
There is a Marion Murray b 1897 departs for Australia in 1926 from London to Melbourne - that's as much as you can see without actually buying any credits. But if you have the names of all the children you could try and see if they all travelled in 1926 before paying to see the transcript.

That is them!! Be aware that using Donald's name didn't bring them up when I searched.
Donald 34, Alex 7, Donald 6, Mrs Marion Murray 29, Agnes 8, Isabella 1, Robert 11 months.
Donald is an Iron Driller and the address in Scotland is 20 Crescent road Greenock.
They left on 23 Dec 1926 from London to Melbourne on the ship Balranald.

Hi
It's so confusing, many of the names are the same, even the ages are similar.
I wonder what would have made such a young family pack up 5 small children and travel - over Christmas - to Australia, and having 2 more children -( my mother 1 of them )
I will be going on to findmypast.com and and see if i can purchase anything for my records.
Thanks

address would have been Cresent street
here's a pic of it

Thank you Elaine, it's hard to imagine people living back in those days, it must have been so hard...we in the 21st century have it so easy.

Hi,
Also any information of Roderick Murray - Donald's brother to Canada, I think Canada was around 1938.
I can't find a Roderick Murray going to Canada in 1938 and I also note that there is no Roderick with Catherine and Daniel/Donald in the census record I found.
But I did find this.
1901 Scottish census
Stornoway Ed 1 page 3 line 13
Address 9 Newton Street
Roderick Murray 13 born Stornoway
Father Robert Murray 31 born Stornaway
Julia Stornoway 31 born Stornaway..
9 Newton Street is the same address that you gave for Donald and Catherine in your second post.
So correct address, wrong parents.
-
Hi,
The information i have is Roddie was the youngest of 12 children, Donald being the eldest. Roddie was 11 when Donald took his family away to migrate to Australia to find work.
I also have a piece of paper sent to me from Stornoway, i have listed it below ( hope you don't mind ) i'm still trying to work out what it's all about.
9 Newton, Stornoway
"In loving memory of Daniel Lewis Murray died 18th February 1940, his brother Robert 1936, his daughter Catherine 1940. his wife Mary 1940" 9 Newton--- Mary would be his 2nd wife.
Feu Charulary for 9 Newton
Murdo MacIver, Shipowner
No title recorded in chartulay, name of feu duty ledger since 1829. MacIver is now dead.
Eldest son John is the coastguard, England. Daughter Catherine is married to Malcolm Murray, Shoemaker, who now occupies the house and feu.
Son Murdo married in America
Daughter Jessie married in Greenock
None of the sons or daughters remained at home except Catherine and she alone took an interest in the house and feu. Catherine and her husband are dead many years and left a family, eldest of whom is a son Donald Murray
20 October 1923, feu charter in favour of Donald Murray.
28 December 1946, property now belongs to Alexander MacIver Murray as per deed excecuted by James D Scoular, Solicitor, Stornoway
2 September 1954, intimation from Anderson, Mac Arthur & Co that this property now belongs to Harold George Grayson.
Thanks
