Title: Smalley Family
Post by: jeffrey4kids on Saturday 01 May 10 21:55 BST (UK)
William Cameron Smalley, Thomas Riley Smalley and Riley Smalley all emigrated from Blackburn, Lancashire in the early 1900's with their wives.  They all became Baptist Ministers, William Cameron Smalley became General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Western Canada in the 1930's.
Can anyone help in trying to find out what became of their families.
Thank you.

The Canadian Letters and Images Project

under Keyword enter Smalley, then click search and this should bring up links to 17 letters with references and information on   Riley Smalley and family and also WC Smalley.

Hopefully, this link will get you directly to one of the letters.

http://www.canadianletters.ca/letters.php?letterid=9591&warid=3&docid=1&collectionid=369

In some of the letters it appears that Riley Smalley is not happy in his profession and wishes that he had remained in England after his marriage and at one point he actually gives up the profession. I didn't read all of the letters but there appears to be very good information in them.
If I have made any errors in the links let me know.

Thomas Riley Smalley was married in Blackburn in 1906 and immigrated to Canada shortly after. He and his wife, Elizabeth Jennifer (nee)Cunliffe lived in Calgary Alberta and later moved to Vancouver, BC. 4 sons..WilFred, James, Thomas, and William. William was killed over Holland on return flight of a bombing mission in 1944 World War II. James was my father. His mother, for clarity, died in 1950. James, my father, died in 1954 and TR senior died in 1971. TR Jr died in the late 1990's, not sure which year. Not sure when Wilf died.

Thomas Riley (TR Sr) was GrandMaster of the Shrine Lodge in the 1950's and remained Past Grand Master through the 1960's. James victor served in World War II 1939 to 1945, with the British Commonwealth Cavelry- Princess Patricia's Light Infentry (BCC-PPLI). He served in England, North Africa, Sicily, and Italy as a "Pathfinder" which as I understand is somewhat like todays special forces.

Wow!
Thanks everyone, this is fantastic!
My great-grandfather Joseph Riley Smalley was a cousin of William Cameron & Thomas Riley (brothers) and Riley Smalley.  William Cameron and Thomas Riley's sister also went to Canada marrying Arthur Oldring who was killed in WW1, I have they had 9 children.
I have information on most lines from their grandfather James Smalley (1810 - 1878) and wife Alice Holden (1811 -1893).  I am struggling to find James's parents as there were 2 John & Betty Smalley's having children christened at Church Kirk, Church, Accrington, Lancashire during the same period.
I live in the Accrington area and researching my father's side with my Mum.  My grandparents never spoke of either of their families.  My Mum does the double checking of my reasearch obtaining certificates etc. so give us a couple of weeks and I should have all my information back - hopefully confirmed.
Thanks again - if anyone would be interested in seeing the information once we are satisfied it is correct or has extra information you are willing to share, please get in touch.

Hello Gill . I am researching my Smalleys from England to Australia . Do you know of any of your Smalleys that came to Queensland or Victoria ? Have you seen this at all ?
Occupation:     Holywell, Flintshire  Cotton Mill Owner
MarcS70l3- Christopher, son of John Smalley, wine merchant, Preston, Lane.
Christopher Smalley, son of John Smalley, who is known as being connected with Sir Richard Arkwright in business (see Bames's Lancashire, vol. ii. pp. 430-1), The original partners finally split up. Samuel Need died in 1781 and Smalley in 1782. Arkwright and Strutt bought Smalley's share in the partnership from his son for £10,751 and Arkwright bought Strutt out of his share. The latter had a thriving business of his own in stockings with mills in Belper and Milford. having in the first instance assisted him with money, and subsequently entered into partnership with him, became a cotton spinner and partner in the Holywell Twist Company. He was originally intended for holy orders, but was removed from school and placed in business — for which he had no great talents — much, it is said, to Mr. Lawson's regret, who regarded him as a pupil of much promise.
Pennant, in his History of HolyioeU Parish, p. 2 1 4, states that Mr. " John Smalley, senior, had long been engaged in a cotton work at Cromford, near Matlock, in Derbyshire, unhappily within the baneful influence of a tyrant rival, which forced him to seek the protection of S. Weuefrede, under which he prospered, and his children still prosper, blessing the benefit of the change made by theirinjured parent." He adds, " it is to Mr. Christopher Smalley, one of the partners, and eldest son of the founder of these great manufacturies (The Cotton Twist) I am obliged for the account of what relates to them."
The circumstances of the family, I believe, changed afterwards for the worse.
There is in Whitford churchyard a tombstone bearing the following inseription :

" Here rest the remains of John Smalley, late of Preston, in Lancashire. He died at Holywell, on 28th day of January 1782, aged 53 years, where he established the cotton manufactory in the year 1777. Ann Smalley, eldest daughter, died May 20th 1790, aged 38. Eli2abeth, his wife, died January 2nd 1796, aged 65. Here also lie the remains of Christopher Smalley, late of Holywell, esq. He died January 11th 1829, aged 74 years. Also of Sarah, his wife, who died 8th November 1832, aged 77 years. Also of John, their only son, who died 8th October 1808, aged 16 years."

Unfortunately I haven't managed to go back further than James b 1810 at the moment.  I will probably have to go and look at the records in person as not all are available on line.  If I find anything to link us I shall get back to you, the information you quoted was very interesting.

Riley Smalley was my great-grandfather; but he stayed in Blackburn (1850-1930). What was his relationship to the Blackburn Smalleys who went to Canada?  I thought that the name Riley started with him- but it obviously did not; where is the first Riley? He was certainly a Baptist; the Smalleys do seem to be Baptists. He had seven children; four survived. Son Herbert was killed in WW1 and has memorial in Tockholes churchyard.  Three sons took over the family textile business but it failed in the Great Depression. My grandfather Thomas moved to Blackpool; had a boarding house in Sherborne Road(?).

I'm the great great- granddaughter of Riley.  My Grandmother was Cissie Smalley daughter of Joseph son of Riley.  She married James Birtwistle who was a chemist in Blackburn before retiring to Cleveleys in the late 60's early 70's.  They had one son Gordon who was also a chemist, both James and Gordon died in 1980 and Cissie died in 1989.  I live in Oswaldtwistle now which is strange as that was where Riley's father was born.  Still trying to find out who James's parents were, from the actual records I have looked through I can only guess and not without any doubt.  Are you trying to research the family too, as I can let you have as much information as I have managed to detect.
Riley's brother, James was a baptist minister and several of his sons went to Canada.  William Cameron became the Secretary of the Baptist Union in Manitoba he was also an author, I have managed to track down one of his books.  Will send another message time flies by and i need to sort my son out before he goes football training.

James Smalley b.1810- was he the 'well-known mesmerist'?  I read in Riley Smalley's obituary in the Blackburn times that James Smalley had 14 children. Perhaps he accounts for all those Smalleys in Blackburn. Stitching together a family tree starting with James could be a large undertaking. I guess that if it hadnt been for the Great Depression, which dispersed many of them, all the Smalleys would still be in Blackburn (this one is in Leicester).

Sorry for the long delay.
Yes James Smalley was the well-known mesmerist, he must have done pretty well for himself as he bought burial plots for each of his children, all in a row, in Blackburn Cemetry off Whalley New Road.  I think we are near the end of doing just that, the marriages and births of Smalley descendants after 1930 are more an educated guess than knowledge, but some certificates have been bought and searching the local press for obituaries and marriage reports have confirmed some.  Our main problem is going backwards from James's parents.
You had asked where the Riley had started, James's sister Alice had married a Riley Cunliffe in 1834.
You mentioned your grandfather was Thomas, do you mind saying who your father was?
If you would like a copy of our research once we have finished, then we will gladly post it to you.  Take care. Gill

A few more thoughts on Riley 1850-1930. (I have heard that) on his death in 1930 three of the sons took over the family mill.  But these were hard times and the depression was causing problems for everyone.  People were surprised that the Smalley mill kept on paying out wages and keeping people on. It turned out that the three brothers were using their savings to pay the workers. When the workers heard this they tried to return their wages.. Ive no idea of the outcome of this story and it may be an urban(Blackburn) myth. But I like to think thsat it might be true.

I would love to think it is true.  My Grandmother, Joseph's duaghter never spoke of her family apart from to say that we should be very proud to be a member of it.  She only spoke of being May Queen of Blackburn and having London designers make her dresses and top photographers to take the photos.  Unitl 14 years ago I had a solid gold brooch which was presented to her in 1921 when she was Temperance Queen in the May Day celeberations, it was engraved on the back with her name and on the front was inscribed with Blackburn Band of Hope League.  It was a pretty thing that I wore on several occasions, but burglers took it during one of 2 break ins.  I still have the official photo and newspaper article.  My Grandma was certainly one on her own!

My cousin in Australia (Isabel, daughter of Riley) tells me that the workers at the Smalley mill used to refer to it as 'Old Mother Redcap' which seems a strange name for a cotton mill. Sometime after closure, she says, it was taken over by Bruce Critchley (these Critchleys do seem to have a role to play). Isabel tries to contact Beryl- daughter of David, Rileys brother- but links have been severed (by time and chance)... I  think Beryl became Beryl Hunter- used to live in Sherbourne Road, Blackpool.
Ive been looking at some docs related to Edith Frost who died 22 June 1983. She did not make a will so everything divided amongst relatives. Some to Clara Smalley descendents (because she was a Critchley I guess) some to James Critchleys descendents, some to Bruce Critchleys descendents; and the Whipps and Hansfords get a mention- I remember various Whipps and Hansfords.

About the family trees- we would of course be delighted to see them. I did send a reply but I think it went via Face book and may have missed you. We are intrigued at the moment by Nova Scotia; we see pictures of Nova Scotia locks- which I thought were taken in 1909, but turned out to be 2009.  Why did I never hear about Nova Scotia during my relatively short stays in Blackburn (in Southworth Street)- not far from Riley Smallweys house in Infirmary Road?  Its a good job you prompted this interest in Blackburn  -so many things I had no idea about.

I researching a Lancaster bomber crashed 8 February 1945 after a midair collision over The Netherlands between the towns Best and Son which is in the S.E. part of Holland. F/Lt Robert Cecil Smalley was the Bombaimer of this crew. His aircraft a 97 Squadron Lancaster bomber ND961 took off from Coningsby for a raid on the Dortmund Ems Canal near Ladbergen. Around 0.50 Hrs this aircraft collided in midair with another Lancaster PB181 which killed 15 crewmembers among them also F/Lt R.C.Smalley. He was 30 years old when he died. On the 8th February 2020 we will erect a memorial near the place where these crewmembers died. I would like to get in touch eager with his family. Is there some one who can help me to track them down?? He was born 6 January 1915 Calgary,Alberta and son of Thomas Riley and Elizabeth Jane(Néé Cunliffe) Smalley of Vancouver. Brother of Wilfred,Victor James,Thomas and Elsie.

Regards and I looking forward to hear,
Adrian
