Title: Dearlove and Adnams
Post by: blueboy on Saturday 01 May 10 18:43 BST (UK)
I have had the Bradfield parish records and found that Thomas Adnams had marriage banns read in 1813. Jane Dearlove was from Sonning and Thomas from the parish of Bradfield.

I am confused again as there are also banns for Thomas Adnams and an Ann Dearlove also in 1813 and the same months. Could this be correct?

My problem is that I can't find any reference to a Jane Dearlove being born in Sonning and after the Banns were read in Bradfield there wasn't a record of their marriage. Could they have married in Sonning? Is so could anyone help me as to which parish records Sonning comes under.

Their children Jane and Elizabeth were on the IGI as born Bradfield but the only child I could find in the records was William born in 1818

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Banns were/are read three times before the marriage. They are read in the bride's parish and the groom's, the marriage is most likely to take place in the bride's parish.

Sonning was a big parish spanning the Berks/Oxon border, the current parish is the Berks portion. OFHS have published the PRs, originals are in the BRO.

Thomas/Jane, Thomas/Ann - could be a mistake. Banns can be read and one of them gets cold feet so the wedding doesn't happen, a few months later they try again (or he tries again with her sister/cousin).

Or there could even be two Thomases. My tree has plenty of instances of cousins of similar age and the same names living in the same village.

Banns were very occasionally read in three parishes.  The bride's parish, the groom's parish and the parish where they were married.  These first two were the parishes where they were living at that time and may have no relationship to the parishes where they were born.

I would suggest that you are dealing with the bride's name being wrongly heard probably in the groom's parish as possibly neither of them could read or write.  It is also possible that you are dealing with a mistranscription.  Have you checked the original banns registers?

Thanks so much for all your replies and the information you have given me. I never thought about the Banns being read in both parishes.

I am grateful for the information about the Parish of Sonning and which Family History Society I need to use for future reference

Harry, thank you for confirming their marriage, children and who Janes parents were, that was definitely an added bonus for me. Your a star.

I am more than happy to share any info I have in the Bradfield parish records - they also include the Tutts Clump Primitive Methodist Chapel records.

Thanks again

Regards
