Title: HILLIS Family
Post by: Lizzy52 on Saturday 01 May 10 03:57 BST (UK)
I am from Nelson, New Zealand, trying to find my Great Grand Mother Mary HILLIS born 1870 Down, Ireland. Her brother Joseph lived in Glasgow and died there in 1941.

Any help with this line of Hillis would be appreciated. John and Margaret HILLIS are their Parents names.

Regards,

Liz

Parents;
John HILLIS and Margaret SINCLAIR
Married to Catherine GALLAGHER, 1879
Died 06 August 1941

What do you know about your ggm's movements after 1870?

Did all the family move to Scotland, if so, when?

Who, when and where did your ggm marry?

Greetings from Scotland! I am the gggranddaughter of Joseph Hillis and Catherine Gallacher and have only been on this trial for a few months. I descend from Josephs son John Hillis and have lots of info on the family in Scotland. I also live near Edinburgh where the records are kept so this makes it a bit easier to do. I know that Joseph was the son of John Hillis and Margaret Wright and he was born in County Down Ireland in 1855. The family lived in the area around Banbridge which was famous for Irish Linen. Margaret had been married before and Wright was her previous married name. There is a marriage listed in Annaclone Church of Ireland in the district of Banbridge between a John Hillis and Margaret Wright on 24/3/1853 but not sure yet if this is our John. Dates fit but Hillis is a common name in County Down. Hope this helps. If you need Scottish info let me know.

Hi LRPIXIE,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
How exciting that you are another descendant of this Family!
Unfortunately Liz ( the original poster) has not been on Rootschat since the original query.
Hopefully they still have the same email address and will get notified of your reply.

Trish :)

MOrning,

Thanks for the replies that I have received, have made contact with a Tartan Cousin, and together we are searching for the Grand Parents. I know that my Great Grand Mother was in Glasgow, before moving to Dundee.

There seems to be a lot of us out there related to this side of the Hillis family.
My Great Grand Mother was with my Great Grand Father John Butchart for many years, he was from Dundee.

Liz

Hi LRPIXIE,
My Hillis family line leads me back to Banbridge too and I have had much contact with some of the Hillis whose family moved there originally in 1690 +/- 1 year. I would be very keen to contact you or anyone else regarding this line of Hillis.  My email is cjg.hillisATemail.ulster.ac.uk
I look forward to hearing from you.
