Hello,
i think i might have posted about this fella before but i still havent got any further with him, some aspects are very confusing.
I have him first appearing on 1871 born Herne Bay in 1841,wife Emma born 1847 Boughton and two kids.
William Horne marries Emma Coachworth Dec 1862 Faversham.
On 1881 hes mistranscribed William Herne and birthdate changed to 1851,now with Ann unknown.Names and birthplaces of sons confirms hes same person.
Also on 1881 theres an Emma Horne born 1845 Boughton in Kent Lunatic Asylum, described as dealers wife.
On 1891 William is now with Louisa(i think Langford).
On the 1901 hes widowed and living next to his son.
He doesnt appear on the 1911.
Theres a death for a William Horne in Blean in 1902 age 67,but this wouldnt fit with a birth date of 1842 or 1851.
What id like to find is anything on him pre-1871,who his second wife Ann was(born 1856 Faversham) and what was going on on 1881.
Also why Emma was in the asylum, and what became of her, whether she might have re-married.
Any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated,
thanks,
Nel.

There's a baptism in Herne that seems to match the William that Cat has found:
1851 7th December
William Charles
Mother Emma HORNE, single women, Herne Bay.

There's a Thomas & Sarah HORNE having nine children baptised in Herne, including a Mary & Richard matching the ages in 1861, & an Emma.

In 1891, theres an Emily Young (age 16, born Herne) with William and Louisa, listed as daughter. Tracing her back to 1881 she shows up here -
William Young 43 Ag Lab Herne
Louisa 45 Whitstable
William J 13 Ag Lab Herne
Daniel 11 Scholar Herne
Emily 6 Scholar Herne
Swalecliffe, Kent
So William Young dies? and Louisa Young nee ? is living with your William by 1891 (can't find a marriage)

Many thanks for all this,
it all seems to fit,i think im going to have to get the marriage cert of William to Emma Coachworth to confirm my Williams mother.
Also, hes only down as born c1851 on 1881,on the others its c1840.This made me think that the 1881 entry was more likely to be an error.
Id like to discover who the Ann ??? is who hes with on 1881,and why Emmas in the asylum. Also shes described as dealers wife, and hes a chimney sweep on all the census. Both his sons were hawkers though,so maybe he did this as well.
Emily Young nee Langford was the last wife, widow of William.
Anything else greatly appreciated, particularly on Ann,who she might have been, why she was in the asylum, and what became of her,
thanks again,
Nel.

If it was Chartham asylum then the records are with East Kent Archives at Whitfield near Dover and you will need to visit to view them.

Hi Nel
I have just joined the forum having seen this thread and am also interested in William Horne. I have quite a bit of info but some of the same gaps as you and would be happy compare notes.
I did get the records from St Augustines, where Emma spent her final years before dying there in 1890. She was originally transferred from a London hospital and I am planning to go to the LMA to find out more, although not sure when.

Alan,
i would be very keen to compare notes.
I have William Horn(e) marrying Emma Coachworth in Faversham in o/n/d 1862.
Two sons that im aware of:
Henry born 1865 married Clara Gibbs j/a/s 1885 Blean.9 children.
Edwin born 1870 married Jane Pooley o/n/d 1891 Blean.10 children.
Jane Pooley had an illigitimate daughter Jane when she married Edwin.
Jane Pooley jnr married Herbert H Bills j/a/s 1908 Canterbury.Herberts mother my ggg aunt.
William Horn(e)s second partner who he didnt marry was Louisa Langford, with whom he had two daughters, they are together on the 1891.
The real mystery im trying to get to the bottom of is on the 1881:
Emma Horne born 1845 Boughton,in Chartham Asylum,(no occ) dealers wife.
William Herne born 1851,Herne Bay,chimney sweep
Ann ??? born 1856 Faversham.
living at Borstal Hill,Whitstable.
Im very keen to discover who the Ann is who hes with whilst his wifes in the asylum.Id be very grateful for any ideas.
Thanks,
Nel.

Nel,
William and Emma were my GGG Grandparents through Edwin.
William Horne, b. abt 1841 d. abt 1902
Emma Frances Coachworth, b. 16 Aug 1846 d. 14 Dec 1890
Married 18 Oct 1862 in Teynham
Emma Frances was in Chartham from March 1876 having transferred from Hoxton House (in London) with Mania caused by Epilepsy. I have yet to get the records from LMA of Hoxton House.
I have few details for Henry.
I have quite a bit for Edwin and Jane (I have 12 children).
Rosa Horn only appears on the 1881 Census.
Louisa Langford was married to William Young (6 Children) but I have no children with William Horne.
The 1881 census is a bit of a puzzle for me as well. It appears to give an age for William 10 years less than the year of birth in the 1871 census. We have never found any other records relating to Ann who remains a mystery.
I do not have Jane Pooley Jnr in my records (I have an Edith who was prior to the marriage of Jane Snr to Edwin).
As I am new to this forum I don't know how to communicate off line, which I would prefer rather than posting full details to the forum.
