Hello all! I have been working on my grandfather's family genealogy lately and have a bit of trouble. The family name is Evenden (at one time Everden). Spent generations in Cranbrook, Frittenden, and Biddenden.
Here is what I have:
I know for certain that my great grandfather is Frederick George Evenden (1851-1918) born in Frittenden, died in Cleveland, Ohio and married to Rose Ann Baker (1862-1947) and married in St. Andrew Holborn, Middlesex on October 24, 1881.
I believe Frederick’s father was William (1795-1881) born in Biddenden and married to Elizabeth Brown in November 9, 1818 in Cranbrook.
I believe William’s parents were Richard (born 1771) in Biddenden and married to Hannah Deas on February 4, 1794 in Biddenden.
I believe Richard’s parents were Richard (born 1742) in Cranbrook and married to Mary Harris on August 1766 in Cranbrook.
I believe Richard’s parents were John (born 1718) in Cranbrook and married to Elizabeth Beach on September 14, 1736 in Dallington, Sussex.
I believe John’s parents were John (born 1692) in Cranbrook and married to Sarah Fethergton on January 5, 1713 in Cranbrook.
I believe John’s parents were Richard (1661-1705) in Cranbrook and married to Judith (unknown) in Kent.
I am looking for suggestions on:
1) What would you all suggest as the best way for me to verify these 'beliefs' I have?
Thanks! If I can verify, then I can begin working on siblings that must be out there.

Searching for wills and memorial inscriptions (some of the Kent ones can list all children) can be really useful when trying to confirm relationships.
Here's a few Kent sites that might help:

Hi
Do you have your Frederick George bc1851 on all the available census returns here in the UK before he left for the US? Do you have his baptism or birth certificate?

Who are Frederick's parents on his birth cert? That will verify (or otherwise) this belief. Though it seems odd that his parents married in 1818 and Frederick wasnt born till 1851 ......
Get this one sorted out first - you may find you were on a wrong track and following the wrong family all along.

I do not have his birth certificate and I cannot find him on the census listings, other than a huge 'perhaps' in 1861 with an aunt and uncle.
I have his marriage listing in a family bible, and his birth date and location.

I believe Frederick’s father was William (1795-1881) born in Biddenden and married to Elizabeth Brown in November 9, 1818 in Cranbrook.
Here is that William in 1851.
This is a few months before Fredk's birth, so his mother would be pregnant at time of census
Unfortunately I can make out if William is married or widowed on the census image as there is a big black blob! But wife is not with him on census night

I dont think you can say this is Fred's father without getting his birth cert.

This looks like the same family in 1841 - though this time father missing
Relationships are not given in 1841 so hard to draw any conclusions

Hi :)
I've just seen this.
I have a Jane Alice Burgess marrying a Richard Henry Evernden Jun q, 1896, Cranbrook
Jane was a relative of mine.
A few years ago I had contact with a gentleman in Australia who had a large database on the Everndens/Evendens up to current times. I'm not sure if I still have a contact e-mail for him as I've changed e-mails a few times since.
If you're interested, I'll do a big search and see if I can find him.
Regards

Thanks all! Such great help!
I have dutifully paid my 9,25 and now will wait, wait, wait for the GRO to get me the birth document.
Any and all additonal help will be much appreciated!
-
Just for good measure.......
I ordered the marriage license certificate as well since it carries a different date on it than I have in my records.
We shall see!

Could we please have full details ie. ages/birthplaces of Benjamin & Ann
Casalguidi :)

I've checked the 1861 census.
It lists Benjamin Barrett as born in 1821 in Binenton (perhaps Benenten?).
Ann Barrett as born in 1822 same location.
Fred G. is also attributed to same location.
-
Binenton (perhaps Benenten)?
I would suggest Benenden then ............... a neighbouring village
A number of parishes from this area are covered by the Mid Kent Marriage Index http://woodchurchancestry.org.uk/midkentmarriages/index.php ................. not that it helps much at the minute but will no doubt come in useful.
Have you tried looking for Benjamin & Ann BARRETT in other census years to see if there are any clues there?

That midkentmarriages is a great resource!
Fun to browse .... And begin some ideas!
-
Well now I have a new twist on my search.
In my first contacts I have been told there are EVENDEN, EVERNDEN and EVERENDEN spellings -- all in Cranbrook and environs.
Guess I will have to broaden my seach parameters! I have never encountered Everenden before.

Hi all,
Been awhile, but I have been waiting for the GRO to send me the birth certificate and marriage certificate for Frederick George Evenden.
First, I got my money back as the listing for their marriage was in error and not them. They emailed me that they looked, found no related record, and refunded.
Better luck on the birth certificate for my great grandfather Frederick George Evenden, but one new wrinkle that I have not come across before on UK Entry of Birth documents.
Frederick George was in fact born 27 June, 1851 in Frittenden. Father was William Evenden, with a residence of Frittenden.
NEW WRINKLE: Name of mother as follows: Elizabeth Evenden, late Allen, formerly Body. I have never come across this use of late and fomrerly.
Can anyone offer some help with this?
Thanks

This means that Elizabeth had been married before.
There's this marriage on freeBMD
William EVENDEN possible bride Elizabeth ALLEN Mar 1850 Shoreditch
It's a long way from Frittenden though ???
-
Thanks for the info!
So is there a way to know which was the birth surname and which was the first marriage surname?
-
I think the late refers tothe first marriage and formerly the maiden name.
