The curious case of Amelia Button. When / where did she die / buried?
What I know is that Amelia was born 1882 near Warnambool, Victoria (from marriage cert) and married Benjamin Deed 1902 in Queen St Melbourne. Marriage Cert 6316/1902 records that Benjamin parents as Benjamin and Jane Eade and Amelia’s as James and Mary Jane Langdon. Havent been able to find death details for Amelia
Death cert of Benjamin (Vic 10716/1949) has mother & father as Benjamin and Jane Eade and states “NOT MARRIED” (Informant on cert was ‘authorised agent’)
Benjamin & Amelia had a daughter, Jean Muriel Deed, born 1899 in Carlton Vic (don’t have birth Cert) which means that she was born before parents married and Amelia about age 17 years. She married Jack Stanley Blakey 1915 in Vic (Cert 7447/1915) and this confirms Jean Muriel Deed’s parents as Benjamin and Amelia Button. Jack and Jean later had at least three children
So why would death cert of Benjamin say not married? But more importantly when and where did Amelia die? Any help, clues etc would be appreciated

Hi Weemalla
Checking the Electoral rolls for Victoria Benjamin DEED and Amelia seem to be together up until 1924
1903 Upotipotpan, DEED Benjamin Labourer, Amelia homeduties
1919 6 Charles St Windsor DEED Benjamin Labourer, Amelia home duties
1924 6 Charles St Windsor DEED Benjamin labourer, Daphne Amelia home duties
After this there are listings for a Benjamin DEED and a Amelia DEED but they are living at different addresses.
Cheers Leonie

Hi
I am a bit intrigued by the DAPHNE Amelia on the 1924 electoral listing from c more.
Is it possible that this is a daughter, not AMELIA the wife??
The couple had been married long enough to have a 21 year old daughter.

Sparret. The Deed v Deed divorce in 1938 might be a lead. Is it possible to get details and if so from where?

There actually seems to be a possible earlier divorce in 1919

Benjamin Deed, Amelia Deed, and Alfred D'Elton.

Good work. At last we have established that Benjamin and Amelia divorced. Is there any record that Amelia remarried? and who is the Daphne Amelia Deed living with Benjamin in 1924 posted by c more? I cant find in Vic bdm any records to match a marriage, death or birth of these folk.

Electoral enrolments are no guarantee that the person named is actually living at that address. The enrolments are for the period between elections and of course people to move and often fail to re-enrol. I doubt that Amelia was living at 6 Charles Street, Windsor on 14 Dec 1919...date of election.
According to the 1924 electoral roll, the enrolment for Daphne Amelia DEED appeared to be an addition. Different sized font that the other listings on the page. I wonder if she was an unmarried partner.

Hi Cando,
I agree that DAPHNE was a likely a new partner for BENJAMIN, the 'Amelia' being 'co-incidence" or "contrivance" who knows.
Well, it appears, does it not, that AMELIA did not marry the co-respondent afterall .
Sue
-
Not very likely, but worth noting this marriage in NSW
In 1933 TAMSITT, JOHN to BUTTON , AMELIA M at BROKEN HILL reg.12268
We have not seen any middle initial or name for AMELIA so...?

Poor Mary Jane Delton died after falling in the yard doing the washing, according to the Adelaide Advertiser, 3 May 1910. So it looks as though the death found by Cando is her.

I did a long post with info....including Judith's info and lost it >:( >:( >:(
Australian Electoral Roll
1936
DEED Amelia 258 Adderley Street, West Melbourne HD
1943, 49 and 54
DEED Amelia 55 Abbotsford Street, North Melbourne HD
These addresses are literally around the corner from each other.
There are two marriages for Alfred Ernest DELTON one in 1918 and another in 1933. His first wife Doris Martha ALLAMBY remarried an Alphonsus PARKER but does not appear on any of the electoral rolls with her 2nd husband....he is there alone until 1954.
However all of this information does not really help find Amelia DEED's death.
The death of an Amelia DEED in South Australia is not this lady...she is the wife of Samuel Alfred DEED.....thought I had found Amelia at at last :(
Cheers

However all of this information does not really help find Amelia DEED's death. CANDO
No, but it intriguing. ;)
Would be interesting to know who were the parents of the lad in the ARMY named WILLIAM JOHN D'ELTON whose NOK is ALFRED D"ELTON. in 1940(does not say father, so may not be! BUT.....)
Born 1919. The year of the divorce application which named ALFRED D'ELTON as C R.
Was this boy AMELIA's?
Sue
-
I was just about to post the same thoughts Sue....
The 1918 marriage of Alfred Ernest to Martha Doris had no issue and there is no William John DELTON b. 1919 on the Vic indexes. I have searched with no surname, mother Amelia and just Wm with mother Amelia 1919...nothing.... and Wm with mother Amelia between 1914 and 1920. There are only two DELTON entries between 1914-1920 and both are marriages. Perhaps he was born post 1920 and altered his age :-\ If he was Amelia's and it is her on the electoral roll, then shouldn't she be named NOK?
Cando
-
That death notice in 1921 only said he was the brother of Josephine (Mrs W A Martin) and uncle of Alfred, Jessie and Aubrey. I assume their surname was Martin. There was no corrsponding Funeral Notice.
There is a birth notice for Aubrey Ernest D'Elton MARTIN, parents Mr and Mrs W A Martin, late of Albury, 25 April, 1915
Some births in NSW to Alfred Snr and Mary J:
1893 Laura J D'ELTON parents Alfred E and Mary J at ALBURY 3817
1895 Alfred E D'ELTON parents Alfred E and Mary J at ALBURY 3817
Judith
-
Thanks Judith....couldn't find Alfred E Jnr on the Vic indexes and thought there appeared to be a bit of a gap between births....quite a number on the Vic indexes. They were married in 1889 and there are four births on the Vic indexes.
Cheers

As Cando said earlier...lots of interestingbiplays but we still havent found the death details of Amelia. Is there any leads over in Western Australia? Why i ask is because i once saw a reference to an Amelia Deed / Button in WAcluded her as i didnt think it was relavent and now cant find the original reference to recheck - probably will be another dead end. Keep looking folks

Hi there all, I am just starting some family research to add to some by other 'family' members D'Elton, and am starting on the Vale, Taafe side.
My Family background is:
Paternal: D'Elton
Maternal: Vale, Taafe (Taaffe)
I noted with interest your comments about Alfred D'Elton and hope this is helpful:
I am the grandaughter of Alfred Ernest D'Elton (Mary Jane Black), and they had six children: Amy Harriet, Laura Josephine, Alfred Ernest (Young Alf), Mary Elizabeth, George Joseph, Charles Lesley (My Father).
Young Alf (Alfred Ernest 1897 - 1981)
1st Marriage - Doris Martha Allamby (1child William John 1919) - from family records and recounts from the Martin Family (Josephine B D'Elton(sister of Alfred Ernest Snr) - Walter Albert Martin).
2nd Marriage- Rose Waldron (Simpson who had 4 children)
they then had 5 children.
This may help your background search for the 'curious case of Amelia DEED nee Button, or may just confuse things more, even so your efforts have helped me in my searches.

Hi Morngal :)
Welcome to rootschat.
I find it odd that the newspaper report of the divorce stated no issue to the marriage of Doris Martha and Alfred Ernest. There is no birth registered to this couple on the indexes which only extend to 1920 in Vic. It was written that Alfred Ernest Jr had deserted Doris Martha.... Perhaps the child's birth was not registered or registered post 1920.
Yet another divorce in 1925 - Doris Martha Delton 24 of Northcote granted divorce from Alfred Ernest Delton 26, driver, formerly of Kensington cause desertion, no issue, marriage 7 Dec 1918. (Argus, 12 Feb 1925)
Judith
As interesting as it is, there is probably no need to know all about the DELTON family as Alfred Ernest Snr was only named as a co-respondent in the divorce between Amelia and her husband...so no legal/family connection. Sometimes we are far too enthusiastic in our searches.....but we do enjoy doing them...well I do ;D
Best wishes

Wow... you people are amazing! Wish I had have found this site sooner.
My cousin put up a post earlier regarding Jean Muriel being our great grandmother and finding info for our grandmothers 90th birthday (Jean Beryl, she didn't like Beryl)
Jean Muriel DEED m Jack Stanley BLAKEY 1915 # 7447
1. Benjamin Stanley b 1916 Caulfield
2. Basil George b 1919 Caulfield
3. Beryl Jean b 1920 Caulfield
Jean Muriel did have a fourth child before she scarpered and my grandmothers knowledge is this (copied from my FTM files):
Muriel left Jack Stanley Blakey when Jean was about 2 years old. She left without taking her children, and stripped the house of everything, including all photos. It is believed Muriel left Jack for Cyril Beggbig. He also left his wife and family. Jean expects the two of them had other children.
Note that this is my grandmothers understanding, and she was two at the time.
Interesting comment from cando re Newman entry... If Muriel did marry Newman and this is the correct death entry.. has anyone checked death index for Mildred Button instead of Amelia.
Funny.. I drive past Springvale cemetary every day.. I'll try and stop and check out Muriel Jean Newman.
For interests sake in this investigation (?) I have included a photo of Muriel Jean Deed, Jack Stanley and son Ben.
Thanks for everyones efforts, you have given me another level on my family history.. which is always exciting. Hope to be able to repay in kind at some stage.
Cheers,

I think it is most likely the correct death entry and if Muriel did marry NEWMAN and she may not have as perhaps she was still legally married to Jack Stanley BLAKEY, it would appear on the death certificate - ie if the knowledge had the correct information.
Why the name Mildred BUTTON?

hi cando
i have just spoken to nana she has confirmed the spelling as BEGBIE...She is a little disappointed that Elma Ruth who could possibly be a half sister only died 3yrs ago. This all seems to fit, looks like cyril died 18yrs before jean we are assuming jean then went on to meet Newman seen as she is buried as Newman we are also assuming she never remarried just took on the surnames of Begbie and Newman. It was rumored that she had 2 more children after leaving Jack and lived in Elsternwick/Glen Iris...

THANK YOU for ALL your help it really is appreciated :)

will print Jean Muriel newmans certificate now THANK YOU!!

I would say that Elma Ruth was definitely married to Keith BEGBIE....you may be able to make contact with a descendant ie if the there are any.
I would be suprised if children to Jack Stanley BLAKEY are mentioned on the death certificate. Hopefully the children she had after she left Jack, are detailed ie if it is the correct certificate.
Please look up for a listing for your mother's cousin on the whitepages. She is of the age to be resident at a retirement village at the number and address I found. If you have a problem please pm [personal message ] me by clicking on the green icon under my username...a new window will open where you can send me a message.
Cheers

Regarding Jean Muriel Newman (nee Blakey nee Deed) and maybe Begbie?
(note plaque at S'vale mentions children Peg and Keith.. this would be Keith Begbie I presume)
We know from her birth cert (courtesy weemalla) her mother was Amelia Deed (nee Button)
We know from her marriage to JS Blakey ( I have reg. entry) her mother was known as Amelia Deed (assuming there were no sisters called Amelia that witnessed the marriage)
We know from cando: (apologies for not quoting.. how do I quote just a section?)
"A possible death for Jean Muriel...age is right....father's full name and mother's surname are correct.
NEWMAN Muriel Jean
Father Deed Benjamin Mother Mildred BUTTON
Murrumbeena 80 years 1979 Reg#20523"
So why Mildred Button you ask cando.. If we can prove that Mildred Button in 1979 is the same as Amelia Button born 1882, then I'd feel more confident that the Muriel Jean is Kristy and my great grandmother AND maybe we should be looking for the death of Mildred rather than Amelia, to close weemalla's initial question.
Kristy.. you mentioned 'Pearl and Harold' via fb.. who are they children of?
I have one concern re dates that don't add up. There was a mention of Cyril Begbie marrying in 1919. Jean Muriel didn't run off until 1922.. after the birth of her fourth child to JS Blakey. I'll have to chase this record.

A Cyril Stanley BEGBIE married his 1st wife in 1919. Why don't the dates add up?
Birth records are not available post 1920.
I'd feel more confident that the Muriel Jean is Kristy and my great grandmother
Sheryl.
Sorry I am bit lost here.
Information on death certificates is only a good as the knowledge of the informant. Perhaps the informant thought Muriel's mother was Mildred. I don't know who was the informant. You will need to contact HintonWilliams. She has the death certificate and the death announcement for Elma which may detail her children etc..
I have searched thoroughly for a death for an Amelia nee BUTTON including trawling through all deaths with father BUTTON. Perhaps you could have a search yourself for a Mildred ... I don't see anything. Vic bdm's are online and it is free to search but pay to view the record and many genealogy societies and libraries have the Vic bdm's.
Good news from HintonWilliams by pm..... her nana has made contact with her cousin ;D
Cheers

I am new to this site and hope I get this right. I believe I am a descendant of Muriel Jean Deed (aka NEWMAN and BEGBIE) I am her grand daughter. I think my father is the son of Harold Stanly BEGBIE who Muriel Jean did not marry. From family stories, she had children prior to those she had with Harold Begbie. I think she did marry a man called Bert NEWMAN. I know very little of my father's family and am trying to put together a pedigree and may be find I have relatives.

I can confirm that Elma Ruth Begbie was married to Keith Begbie (actual name Harold Keith Begbie) known as Keith. I am their daughter. I heard my grandmother (keith's mother) had children prior to meeting my grandfather but no nothing about those. I will log on again and see if there is any response to this

Hi,
My father is also grandchild of Muriel Jean Deed. Was your grandfather Harold Stanley also known as Cyril? There are electoral roll records that report C.Begbie, Jean, Keith and Elma in 1954. All at address 196 Glenhuntly rd, Elsternwick (ref post reply #38 from cando).
Does this information tie in with yours unipen?
Regards,
Sheryl

Hi my name is Robert Gibbins and I am also interested in Amelia (Amella) Deed (nee Button) and she was born in 1882 in Warracknabeal, Victoria.
Her father was James Button who died in 1902. Her mother was Mary Jane Button (nee Langdon) and she was born in Belfast/Port Fairy near Warrnambool, Victoria. After James' death she married Thomas James McEwen in 1902. Her grandfather Robert Button came from Kirby le Soken Essex. He came to Australia as a convict on the Arab in 1834 and served his time in Tasmania before going to Victoria. Robert Button (Snr) died near Horsham Victoria in 1878.
Amelia's grandmother was Mary Heaton (nee Redman from Haworth, Yorkshire. Bronte Country) and she had four children. Henrettia Heaton, James Button, Robert Button and Mary Ann Button. James was her father and he was reportedly born in 1850 on the banks of the Murray River.

Hello to Raspy. This topic you posted on 2010. You mentioned Doris Martha Allenby b1900. was married to your grandfather Alphonsus Parker. Do you know what became of Doris. They are on 2 electoral rolls in Caulfeld, Melbourne, but she then is not listed. I am doing Allamby family in Victoria if I can help you.
regards Tassel.

Re: Doris Martha (Allamby) Parker. Members Essie and Raylen solved problem. Doris changed her name to Dorothy Marie and married Clifford Bruce Pavey. Her sister Elva May Allamby was married to his brother William Bond Pavey.

Hello, Just came across this forum. Dorothy, (Doris) Martha (Marie) Pavey, Parker, D'Elton nee Allamby wa my great step mother. She married my great grandfather Alphonsus Apsley Westalke Parker. There are records stating she deserted the first marriage to Alfred Ernest D'Elton Jnr and had a son William John D'Elton 1919. There are news articles in trove regarding the desertion of the D'elton divorce. She then married my Great grandfather Alphonso Apsley Westlake Parker in 1925 and adopted a girl Jean McPherson from mother Jessie Louisa McPherson in 1926. She then deserted this marriage shortly after the adoption and name changed to Dorothy Pavey. Her sister Elva May Allamby married George William Grace they also had a daughter Barbara Jean Grace in 1934. Elva also deserted her husband and left the child and William Pavey. In my research both sisters deserted marriages and married a Pavey. Both daughters born and adopted have Jean in there middle name. Doris is a mystery in our family as we know she married my great grandfather to adopt our grandmother then left the marriage shortly after. We have been searching for the birth mother Jessie Louise Mcpherson ever since as my grandmother was the only child born into the Mcpherson family. We would love to solve this mystery x
