Title: Hegarty, Dillon, Diamond
Post by: k46489 on Tuesday 27 April 10 18:38 BST (UK)
Would anyone be willing to look up my Glenullin families? I have the Hegarty, Dillon, and Diamond families in mind. My great-great grandfather Patrick Hegarty died around the turn of the century(19th) and his wife's name was Mary(not sure if she was a Diamond or Dillon). Patrick had at least 5 children including my great grandmother Catherine/Katherine, who was a cousin of Monsignor Bernard Henry Diamond. Something about Patrick's estate was published in the Coleraine Constitution, if anyone has access. Does this ring any bells?

Welcome to Rootschat. I've split your post from the Glenullin thread so it wouldn't get lost.

“Bernard H Diamond (Monsignor) was born in Brockabouy now Hillside Road on 7th January 1872. When he was fourteen years old his family emigrated to America. He was ordained on 9th June 1900. In 1923 he became Protonatary Apostolic. He served mainly in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dallas Texas. He died on 7th December 1941 and is buried in Calvery Hill cemetery in Dallas.”- St. Mary’s Ballerin (2005)
1900 Census- St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri: Bernard H. Diamond, Jan.1872 Ireland, student, to US 1886.
1910 Census- Fort Worth, Tarrant, Texas: B.H. Rev. Diamond, 39, Ireland
19 Aug.1929 “Baltic” Cobh, Ireland to New York: Rev. Bernard H. Diamond (age 57)
20 Sept.1935 “Washington” Cobh. Ireland to New York: Bernard Rev. Diamond (age 62)
Parents were Manassas Diamond and Mary Mullan and he had at least one brother, Patrick (born 23 Aug.1869).

Did your Catherine Hegarrty come from Brockabuoy? was she born 4 July 1875?

Not sure what would have been in the paper about Patrick's estate but if you have the date of the paper I'll try to find it for you.

There is a Mary Hegarty who was born 1st March 1871 in the parish of Errigal
Her parents were Patrick Hegarty and Mary nee Dillon.

There is also a John Hegarty born 4th Jul 1873...parents Patrick Hegarty and Mary Dillon

They look like they could be Catherine's siblings

I have a copy of that also. There would have just been a small legal notice in the paper but will have a look in Constitution.

Have a Patrick Hegarty of Brockabuoy, died 1880 wfe Mary Dillon- known children: Martha (26 Feb.1865), Daniel (1 Feb.1867), Patrick (4 Feb.1869), Mary (1 Mar.1871), John (4 July 1873), Catherine (4 July 1875). Not sure if this is the correct family.

Hi, the names seem to match up, but I'm not sure if it is the right family either. Since all of their names are pretty common. I was hoping Aunt Susan Saxe could be the link, because that surname is so uncommon in Ireland. Thank you so much. ;D

I think Susan Hegarty/Saxe may not have stayed in Ireland- suspect perhaps she went to U.S. but haven't found her there yet.

Mary Dillon born c1833. Then Mary (Dillon) Hegarty was a sister of George (born c1831) and Denis?
Is Thomas Dillon (m. Susan Diamond) connected? I have article about accident and his death in Strabane.

I'd love to have that information Aghadowey. I'm involved in a little group with ancestors from the Garvagh area...Sheila8 and I have shared a lot of information...though Sheila has given me more than I've returned!
I'm not related to Patrick....well maybe an in-law of an in-law of an in-law because everyone in the area seems to be related if you go back far enough!!!My family are O'Kane's from Garvagh (the Commercial Hotel)

Hello,
I am the great great great grandson of Patrick Hegarty and his wife Mary Dillon.  Patrick and Mary had at least 12 children, whom I have details of.  I also have photographs of two of them and details of their descendants.

"Familyroutes" on this post has been a contact of mine for over five years and alerted me to this post.

My great great grandmother was Rose Hegarty who married William Rafferty.  We (the Raffertys) have always thought that we are the only descendants of Patrick and Mary in Ireland, but I am aware of some of the American connections.  I'd love to be proved wrong!  The Raffertys eventually inheirited the Hegarty homeplace and live there until this day.

k46489, we must definitely be cousins! Please email me at (*)

We can talk more then, I'm very interested!

Hi Aghadowey,
All this info is great, thanks for posting it!  I wonder if there is anyway we can confirm this Susan Saxe was a Hegarty from Glenullin.

Also, I'm not sure about that marriage record.  Do you mean this marriage record?;

Of Florence Saxe to Joseph H Roche on 25th November 1908. in Kings, Brooklyn, New York.  Certificate Number 9040.
Title: Re: Hegarty, Dillon, Diamond
Post by: aghadowey on Wednesday 28 April 10 22:02 BST (UK)
Yes, think that Florence and Joseph Roche were married in 1908 (as per marriage). Might have been older child/children away from home by 1930. 1910 and 1920 census would probably confirm this.

Still haven't found marriage for Charles Saxe to Susan ? but the fact that 1930 gives her birthplace as N.I. is encouraging.

I have done research on this Hegarty Dillon family and will paste here 2 generations. I have much more if you are interested plus photos and documents.
Mary Dillon was my ggrandfather's sister.

I can only post the first generation here because if I try to post the 2 generations, it is too many characters. 2nd generation to follow.

Patrick Hegarty Family
First Generation

1. Patrick Hegarty. He was born abt 1830. Patrick died on 25 Jul 1880 in Brockaghboy, Errigal Parish, Co. Derry, Ireland.

Patrick Hegarty mentioned in his Will his wife Mary and son Dennis. He wrote his Will on 10 July 1880 and died  25 July 1880 in Brockaghboy. The witnesses to his Will were George Dillon, John Diamond and John Lynch. The children of Patrick Hegarty and Mary Dillon were born in Brockaghboy. It is most likely that the John Diamond who witnessed the Will is the same John Diamond married to Catherine Dillon, a sister of Patrick’s wife Mary Dillon. It is also most likely that the George Dillon who signed the Will is a brother to Mary Dillon, wife of Patrick Hegarty. It is most likely that this George Dillon mentioned in the Will is my greatgrandfather who was living in Brockaghboy at that time and not the George Dillon who lived in Brockagh.

He married Mary Dillon, daughter of Dennis Dillon (abt 1801-1891) & Mary Diamond, bef 1856. She was born in Coolcoscreaghan, Errigal Parish, Co. Derry, Ireland, abt 1833. Mary died on 3 Mar 1895 in Brockaghboy, Errigal Parish, Co. Derry, Ireland.

According to Mary Hegarty’s will, she sold everything and left 20 pounds to her daughter Martha in America, 20 pounds to her daughter Catherine in America, 1 shilling to daughter Rose Rafferty, 1 shilling to son Dennis, 1 shilling to daughter Susan Sex, and 1 shilling to son Daniel. The balance of money from the farm was to be divided equally among Patrick, Mary and John Hegarty. The executors were listed as Francis Hagan of Brockagh and Dennis Dillon of Coolcoscreaghan. The witness was Dennis Dillon.

Mary Dillon, born about 1833, is a sister to my greatgrandfather, George Dillon of Brockaghboy. Mary would have been born about 1833 according to her death record and the birth of her earliest child that I have found was in 1856. A George Dillon acted as a sponsor to her son who was born in 1863. A Catherine Dillon was a sponsor in 1856 and a Francis Dillon and Rosey Dillon acted as sponsors in 1857. These people would most likely be siblings or first cousins to Mary. Since Mary mentioned in her will that Dennis Dillon was the executor and also a witness, it is most likely that Mary was also a sister to Dennis Dillon of Coolcoscreaghan. Her parents would therefore be Dennis Dillon and Mary Diamond.

According to the Irish death index, Mary was 62 when she died which suggests a birth year of about 1833.

Hi Sheila, thanks for the pedigree ;) I had no idea there were so many children until this week. I do know that the son John moved to New York where he was a stone mason, and he moved later to Washington D.C. where he worked on many of the monuments there. Daniel I believe went to Brooklyn, and Martha had a large hotel for many years in Atlantic City, N.J.

     Thank God for the internet!

Hello everyone, I am a descendent of the Raffertys as well. My great grandfather Alfred Leo Halpin married Margaret Annie Rafferty. Margaret Annie Rafferty was one of Thomas Rafferty and Mary Darragh's daughters. My Thomas Rafferty (my great great grandfather) was the brother of your William Rafferty, who married Rose Hegarty in 1882. Thomas Rafferty was one of William's older brothers. Thomas and William Rafferty's father was John Rafferty. William and Rose were sponsors of some baptisms of Thomas Rafferty's children. Mary Diamond was a sponsor of some event as well. Anyone with info just private message me!
