My grandfather,David Harvey, joined the Castle Rock as an apprentice in 1892.The Castle Rock was a sailing schooner with sister ships: Dumbarton Rock and Beacon Rock.I cant find out which shipping company they belonged to.
He wrote letters home about his first journey which would be of interest to anyone with an ancestor on these ships.
Later he was a master with Staits Company in Penang and died in Penang Hospital in 1942.Anyone with any information about the Hospital or Stait Company during the 20s and 30s?

according to http://oceans1.customer.netspace.net.au/international-wrecks.html (http://oceans1.customer.netspace.net.au/international-wrecks.html)
The Castle Rock was to have a very short life
Castle Rock. Ship, 1912. Built 1892. Lost between Sydney and Seattle, USA, 1908 [LAH]
Unfortunately I've been unable to establish which line she sailed for.

Thank You for that. These schooners must have been pretty dangerous.

Hello, my family have a Lloyd's Medal awarded to John Cawse Prout who was captain of the Castle Rock in January 1894, from searching the internet I found this website
:http://powertree.tripod.com/ships.html ,
From this I have learned that a ship formerly known as the Worrall, sold in 1889, re-registered in Sonderho, Denmark and renamed "Else" sank 600 miles southwest of the Lizard on 17th January 1894 after capsizing in a storm which had raged for several weeks whilst she was on passage from Guayaquil, Ecuador to Hamburg. Her crew were rescued by the Castle Rock of Glasgow and landed at Plymouth on 20th January 1894.
I guess the medal was awarded for this rescue... Was your relative still on the ship then?
Regards
Steve

My granduncle, Peter Johnson, was second mate on the Castle Rock and was in charge of the boat which rescued the men from the Danish barque 'Else'. I have the medal he was awarded for that rescue and a copy of a letter sent to the 'Shetland Times' by the mate of the 'Else' - Jens Miller- in which he gives an account of the rescue and commends Peter for his seamanship. |I also have a clock which we believe came from the Castle Rock and a photo album containing the following photos of seamen from the Castle Rock:
W.R. Stewart 3rd Officer, S. P.Bowyer Sailmaker, G.A. Waterman apprentice, D. Harvey apprentice (janem's granfather?) F. T. Mann apprentice (also Miss B.A. Mann -presumably asister)
There is also a photo of R. Beaton, Glasgow but it does not say if he was on Castle Rock.
The letter from David Harvey would be very intersesting. I do not know when Peter joined the Castle Rock but following the rescue he was 2nd Officer on the ss Cyrus.
It would be interesting to have a picture of the Castle Rock.

Rex's second link is interesting. This is a site for ships wrecks. It comes up in german for me but I don't know if this is automatic for me because I am accessing it from Germany. If you are also getting the page in german, there are buttons at the top to change the language.
There is a link on the right of the page "zugeteilt zu:" /" assigned to".
Click on this link and you get a page with details about the ship, and with other links to details about the builder and the owner.
regards / Gruß,
Bob

Hi Janem
Very interested in your post re Castle Rock. My grandfather John Cawse Prout was the captain of Castle Rock from 1892 to 1894. Would be interested in your grandfather's letters of his trip.
Also, my father, Stanley Yerward Prout ( son of John Cawse Prout) was Chief Engineer on the Straits Steamships in Malaya from about 1926 to when the fall of Singapore occurred, 1942.
Hope this may be of interest to you.

Your post is of interest to me as my grandfather, John Cawse Prout was captain of the Castle Rock when it rescued crew at sea on January 17th 1894. He also was awarded a Lloyds Medal for the rescue. I am interested in the letter you have which gives the account of the rescue.
Is my grandfather mentioned at all in the letter or in your photo album?
