Title: Southborough address on 1861 census
Post by: Myfanwy 65 on Monday 26 April 10 00:55 BST (UK)
Hi ,
I am trying to find the history of the house my husband was born in in Southborough Kent.
It was reputedly Queen Caroline's halfway house. ( Halfway to where I don't know  ;D )

It has now been demolished ( it was a listed building ) as a newspaper report which we have in our possesion shows.  :(

I have also a drawing of it dated 1856 so must been on the 1861 census.

On 1881 census living there was a Susan Milbank who is listed as a Dukes daughter so traced her but not there in 1871. Her lineage is well documented as she was an Osborne prior to marriage.

I digress, as my question is how can I find the address on the census. Is there any way as have checked what I thought was the right district  ( district 6 ) all pages and cannot find it.

The house was called Bloombank on the drawing and address was 1 park road Southborough.

It later changed to Winton Lodge.

Thanks for reading this
Val

The 1861 census just lists a household of servants  ???

Hannah Edwards cook
Lucy Underhill parlour maid
Caroline Kingsgate house maid

Hi Bearkat,
So sorry for my late reply but wasn't notified , and I have only just seen it. :-[

So , a household of servants which could bear out the therory that it was someone's country house maybe  :-\

So was it called Bloombank or just 1 Park Road ? Thanks for finding it as I couldn't.
How did you search for it as I don't know how to on anything other than 1881 census.
I now need to go back even futher to see who owned it  ::)

Many thanks for your help and please accept my apologies for not checking this post sooner.
