Title: Cornelius Rahilly - POW in WW1
Post by: corisande on Sunday 25 April 10 11:26 BST (UK)
Another of the Casements Irish Brigade  (http://www.irishbrigade.eu) men that I am researching

Cornelius Rahilly (http://www.irishbrigade.eu/recruits/rahilly.html)was previously a clerk before becoming  Private 10714 in Royal Irish Regiment. He was taken prisoner in 1914 and ended in Limberg Camp, where he joined Casements Irish Brigade

Keogh, the Sgt Major there,  has him as "Con O'Rahilly of Cork". Keogh also gives him as later a lieutenant in the Old IRA. And that he became a farmer in Cork

1911 Irish census gives no clues. Only one Cornelius Rahilly of right sort of age, 33, but is married and invariably the Irish Brigade did not accept married men. The 1911 English Census does not give anyone.

The closest likely birth in Irish State records is at Kanturk 1880 Jul/Sep if he was born in Cork, and there is a 1888 birth in Tralee, Kerry. The 1880 birth ties up with a death in Millstreet, Cork in Apr/Jun 1947. This in turn leads to a 1911 census entry of a Cornelius Rahilly, of the right age, married for 2 years without children.

Apparently he wrote a full account himself first published in the Kerryman in the 1930s. But I have not been able to get that online. Does anyone know if that period can be purchased with an online subscription

Later editions of the Kerryman (1950 - 2008) are currently available on www.irishnewsarchive.com (subscription site)

They dont mention specific plans for updates, but might be worth keeping an eye on..

Yes, I thought it was only post 1950 online. I guess it depends on how profitable their archives are as to whether they do the lot in the future

I have been sent one of his articles that someone transcribed some years ago from a Kerryman dated 1936. It is clearly one of a series of such articles that O'Rahilly did for the Kerryman

He signs himself off as "Con O'Rahilly, Rathcoole, Banteer, Co. Cork"

I just came across your post, Con O'Rahilly was my grandfather & he served in Roger Casement's Brigade. He wrote articles for the paper about his time in the War. Which is all we know about his time there. If you would like to know more you can contact me. It would be interesting to see what information you have on him as well.

Thanks for your reply

I have a new website on Irish Brigade since my original post here.

http://www.irishbrigade.eu/recruits/rahilly.html

Has my information on Cornelius Rahilly. Anything you can add would be appreciated.. I cannot PM you till you have 3 or 4 posts on this forum, however you can contact me by the link at the bottom of Con Rahilly's page on the Irish Brigade Site.

I have only managed to get one of the Kerryman articles, so if you have scans of them all it would be very useful
