Title: Ballinabanaba/Killure castle
Post by: nbrome on Sunday 25 April 10 10:24 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any info on these old castles in Fohanagh parish? I don't know if it's the same one. Lewis mentions the Ballinabanaba ruin but I can't find any info on it on the web.
In fact, looking at old maps of the area (I'm looking at Doon townland) the area seems to be riddled with old forts and castles.
If anyone knows anything of their history I would be very grateful.

Nuala

Killure Castle and Ballinabanaba Castle are not the same.
Ballinabanaba is a townland in the Civil Parish of Fohanagh,
Killure Castle is a townland in the Civil Parish of Kilgerrill.
Both Civil Parishes are in the Ecclesiastic Parish of Kilgerril/Killure and Fohanagh.

Mary, yes, in the meantime I saw on another map that they were different castles.
I was wondering what the history of all those old ruins was. There seems to be lots of old forts in the area. Did they belong to Irish chieftains or English colonisers, I wonder?
