Hi,
Searching for any descendants of David and Martha Mumford (nee Mason) who arrived in Lyttelton 1851. They came from Stonely, Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire, England.

Have found both David and Martha at Linwood cemetery Block 22 Plot 18
There are some others listed with the same surname but am not sure if they are related or not

That's the right David and Martha. Some of the other Mumford's listed in cemetery database are definitely related.

Are you a member of NZSG?
They are holding seven Certificates for David (including possibly his baptism in 1816 in Kimbolton, Hun, England) and death in 1891.
Martha is also listed on some of them and Martha Mary.
There is also a school record admission for a Martha Mumford aged 4yrs in 1880 but no corresponding birth at BDM.
Further enquiries to Canterbury Branch NZSG.
BDM show no Mumford births in NZ prior to 1865 and those between 1865 and 1874 show no parents names, and those after 1874 have no David/Martha as parents ::)

Hi There,
I went to the cemetery this morning and by the look of it if there was one it has been vandalised or missing altogether so will check with the library on Monday or Tuesday for you
It is so sad as there are a lot like that at Linwood Cemetery :'( :'( :'(

Hi Fran,
I went back to the library and checked the cemetery book. If there was a headstone it was missing when they were transcribed about 1978

For those of you who are interested in the Mumfords buried in the Linwood Cemetery Christchurch I would just like to let you know that there are 6 Mumford graves in our cemetery they are:
1: David and Matha Mumford Block 22 Plot 18
2: Samuel (6yrs) Olive (8yrs) and Veronica (10yrs) in BLock 43 Plot 78...these 3 children drowned at Riccarton Racecourse 19/1/1916
3: Emma North Mumford 1851-1903 who married Morgan Davis 1841-1875 in Block 18 Plot 191
Emma was born at sea while the Castle Eden lay in anchor in Lyttelton Harbour.
I am a trustee for the Linwood Cemetery but the Mumfords are also on my ex husbands Horwell family tree....Charles Fredrick Horwell married Evelyn Ada Mumford 1871-1943
I would also like you to know that I have last week I cleaned up the grave of the 3 Mumford children and have planted Pansy's on the grave which has sides but no headstone....I will also attending to the grave of Martha and David and Emma over the next few weeks as part of a family project to maintain all Horwell connected graves in the Linwood Cemetery. I hope this information reassures you that the family graves are being cared for:)

Sorry to join in so late, there are Mumfords buried at Barbadoes Street Cemetary in Christchurch - I think it is some of the children (or childrens children) of David & Martha.
Also, Morgan Davies who was Emma North Mumfords husband is buried with the Mumfords at Barbadoes Street.
I live very close by and can visit to take some photos if anyone would like? Would be glad to help.

I live in Wellington. Most of the direct 'Mumford' descendants live in the North Island. From the Mumford family tree I have put together over the years, even the descendants from Cuthbert Grosvenor Mumford live in Wainuiomata, Wellington. Have no contact with them. The direct Mumford male lines are hanging on by a thread, and if they grow up to have only female children then the lines will eventually die out.

I'm very new to this site but happened to find your question regarding Mumford decendants. I've been researching my family for the last few days and my Great Great Grandmother was a Mumford from that line, Sarah Susannah Harrison (nee Mumford) was married to Jabez Harrison. They had 8 children including my Great Grandfather George Harrison married to Lilly Harrison (nee Patterson). George and Lilly had 3 children including by Grandmother Dorothy Lynn (nee Harrison). My Grandmother had 4 children including my mother Jennifer Jenkins and I am one of 3 children Joanna Minnery.
As I said I've only been looking into this for a few days so very nice to find a link - nice to meet you :)

Hi there great to hear from you.....Jabez and Susannah are buried in the Linwood Cemetery Christchurch along with several others from the Mumford family ....I do have some photos which I will hunt out for you I also have a lot of other information on the Mumford family so please ask any questions that you have and I will try and help you any way I can

Thanks for your reply, any information would be fantastic to add to my family tree. My grandmother is quite elderly now and would be most interested as well as other members of the family.
It was rumoured throughout my family that David Mumford came out here as a man servant for Lord Montague. I wondered did you ever find out anything to substantiate that?

I'm also a descendant of David & Martha Mumford through Sarah Susannah Harrison (nee Mumford). She was referred to as Susan age 3 on the Castle Eden shipping list.
