Title: John and Susan Bumby died 1858
Post by: loislane112 on Wednesday 21 April 10 10:24 BST (UK)
Does anyone have this couple in their files.  I am trying to find  their deaths as it looked as though they died within a few weeks of each other of fever in late 1858.  I have a certificate for John dated 2 11 1858 aged 46 years, salesman at 4 Cobourg Street, Leeds but in the previous two censuses he had been a warehouseman living in Templar Street, then North Street, Leeds.  I believe these are near the town centre and still exist.  So does anyone know where Cobourg Street was or is?. If it is quite near then they could have moved between 51 and 58 and changed his job.  Any help would be appreciated

I believe the Merrion Centre in Leeds was built on what was the site of Cobourg Street.  It is certainly less than a mile from North Street.

The Cobourg's were off the junction of Woodhouse Lane and Claypit Lane.
(The public house at the corner being named The Cobourg).
North Street being a 5minute walk away down what is now Merrion Way.

I understand this is an old request - but here's an image of 4 Cobourg Street taken in 1937.
If you put Cobourg Street into the search on the Leodis site, there are quite a few images.

Kind regards,

I would be interested to see a recent photo of the grave. The photo in my possession does not reflect the earlier post.

In my photo the gravestone reads:

IN
Loving Memory of
JOHN BUMBY
DIED NOV. 2ND 1858
AGED 46 YEARS
AND SUSAN, HIS WIFE
DIED AUG. 13TH 1858
AGED 46 YEARS.
ALSO JOHN BUMBY THEIR SON
DIED MAY 13TH 1973,
AGED 32 YEARS.
AND SARAH ELLEN, HIS WIFE
DIED MARCH 8TH 1917,
AGED 81 YEARS.
ALSO THEI CHILDREN
FRANK
DIED AUG. 20TH 1869,
AGED 5 MONTHS
AND
JOHN WILLIAM
DIED JUNE 7TH 1872,
AGED 8 YEARS.

There is no mention of a stillborn child, nor is Florence or any other sibling included. I don't have a date for this photo, so it could date from after Sarah Ellen's death but before the death of any of the other children. It is all a little odd, as Harry predeceased his mother Sarah Ellen, but is not mentioned, and Samuel and Edwin both predeceased Florence, yet she is listed in the previous post...

The above listing was obtained from the burial register for what is now a private burial site.
[Now under the ownership of Leeds university]

The company that owned the cemetery went into voluntary liquidation in 1967 and in 1968 the majority of headstones and memorials were removed, none of the bodies were exhumed. I believe relatives were compensated for the loss of their graves. It is now called St. Georges Field as within the campus of Leeds University. As a child I would visit most weekends with my grandmother and it was a fascinating, scary place, visiting now it seems much smaller than I remember it being.

Hi all,

I've found this chat really useful and would like to reach out to potential relatives, 'Sonofsuffolk', 'vcmt2008' and maybe 'loislan112'?

I've recently gone through some of my Grt, Granny's family tree information with my Mum and think we are overlapping with the Bumby side of the family.

I come down the Henry (Harry) Bumby and Sophia (Boyle) line. Henry, older brother to Gertrude Bumby who I believe have family in Suffolk.

Henry's parents being John Bumby III and Sarah Ellen Whitaker, who's parents are John Bumby II and Susan Asquith. I think John Bumby II was older brother of William Bumby, who's family emigrated to Montana.

Regards

Jack
