Title: 1831 Irish Census
Post by: jjl1329 on Tuesday 20 April 10 13:56 BST (UK)
I have been told that their exists fragments of this census, in particular Banagher, Derry.
Griffiths valuation indicates a Robert Duddy in Feeny, Banagher. I would like to see what Duddy families may have existed there in 1831, and if Roberts was one of them..

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat. The 1831 census for Co.Londonderry was really a religious headcount giving the name of head of house, the number of males and females and their religion. For Duddy in Banagher it does not give the townland only the Parish.
That said there are two Robert Duddys as head of house and also John, Mathew and William in this parish.

Regards

1831 census [head of household only]

Parish of Banagher
John Duddy, Clagan
William Duddy, Clagan
Robert Duddy, Feeny village
Matt Duddy, Tirglassan
Robert Duddy, Tirglassan

The 'original' will give you number of families in household [usually one], numbers and sex of occupants and relgious affiliation [and number of servants if they had any]

I am also very interested in finding an ancestor in the the 1821 Irish census. I am looking for James Corrigan born 1827.  I do not know where he was born but have been told the family came from either Mayo or Waterford. James shows up in 1851 England census as living in Prescot Lancashire. I would love to be able to find out his parents/siblings etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Gail

The 1831 Census for County Londonderry (the subject of this thread) survives but the 1821 for Co. Mayo does not.

Added- see census section under MAYO RESOURCES & LINKS-

Hi,
There are various Craigs in the Parish of Banagher in 1831 including several Johns but the only one in Clagan was Samuel. The census only gave the name of the head of house and the number of males and females in each household and their religion.

Perhaps by 1831 John Craig resided in a different townland than Clagan? If he was a labourer that would be a common  practise to move to where the work was.

Tanya,
Witherows have been in the Parish of Banagher for a long time. I have done some look-ups and found the following.

1831 Census- Hugh, James, James, Joseph, Thomas, William,  all heads of house Aughlish.
                       George, Gallany, Banagher
                       David, Teeavan, Banagher

1796 Flax Growers Register- Alexander, James, Joseph, Samuel, Thomas, William, all Banagher Parish

1766 Religious census- Hans, James, Thomas, William, all Banagher Parish heads of house.

1740 Census of Protestant householders- James, Thomas, William, all Aughlish, Banagher.

Regards

Thanks for the quick response

Yeah they have...trying to separate the different families out is the problem ;o)

Just another quick question someone may be able to help with, the 1766 census lists Hans Witherow... I have come across this person before...would Hans be short for/nick-name for James? I wouldn't have thought that this was a typical scots/irish name?

Thanks

I've see Hans used as a first name in several Co.Londonderry families before 1800- possibly from the Latin form of John- Johannis.

Kaz,
Are you looking for someone in particular. I can find Rosboroughs in Bannagher and Guys in neighbouring parishes and even a Guy/Rosborough marriage but it was in Learmount Church of Ireland which is fairly close to Banagher.

Thanks to you both for your replies.  Kingskerswell the Guy/Rosborough marriage is of interest to me as I know my great great grandfather Alexander/John Guy married a Matilda Rosborough. I have no other information any further back on either and was hoping to find something.  They lived in Teenaght in Banager and i have found the family in both the 1901 and 1911 census's. Any information you have would be great.

Thanks again,
 Kaz
