Title: Admiralty Road Rosyth
Post by: Manick on Tuesday 20 April 10 11:42 BST (UK)
Hi all,
In 1925 my grandfather & his eldest brother had a Clothier's & Outfitters in Edinburgh in partnership with Andrew Wilkie under the name of Lawrie & Wilkie. On looking recently at documents concerning the disposition of premises, it seems that there was another branch at 255 Admiralty St Rosyth. I know it was there in 1937. My grandfather & his brother died in 1929 & 1927. What I am interested in is whether the Fife branch existed before 1937. If anyone can help, I'd be grateful.

According to "A Brief History of Rosyth" -

1925    Featherstone's new store opened in Admiralty Road (later Lawrie & Wilkie)
I'll see if I can find out when it became Lawrie & Wilkie

Unfortunately the Valuation Rolls for Dunfermline Burgh before 1957 are not available so I couldn't get an accurate check. However, Martin Roger's latest book Rosyth Through Time has a photograph of Featherstone's shop in 1935. According to Rogers "The shop was taken over by Lawrie & Wilkie in about 1938, later changing its name to Wilkie's". It is now a Spar shop.

Thanks for your help. I guess when the Lawrie's died, Andrew Wilkie or his son kept on. I expect he was a tailor too.

Re: Admiralty Road Rosyth,

Wilkies is now a supermarket, it was a great shop for buying school uniforms.
