I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Startup alias Bartlett family in Bampton (can anyone tell me why the alias should be in a surname like this? I have never found a satisfactory answer when I Googled this) and their connections to the Snoswells/Snowsells etc. Particularly a marriage of Toby Snowsell to a Startup alias Bartlett. I am thinking of the mid 1500's to early 1600's.
Many thanks - Jill

The only marriage I can see in Bampton is 2 Jan1597 Tobias Snoswell to Dorothy Kingson.
There is a baptism of Agnis Starkup 8 Jan 1615 daughter of John and Edith als Bartlett. Often that means John Starkup and Edith Bartlett were not actually married.

Thank you very much for that, a bit more info for the pot.

Jill, I have just copied all the Startup entries I can see from the Bampton transcripts in the library at Oxford. Would you like me to send them?

Fionah, that would be wonderful, and thank you very much. Are you studying this family? If so, I can send you copies of various Wills that I have got from the Record Office.
My email address is (*)
Many thanks again - Jill

To stake a claim to a legal entitlement originating from a will, deed or settlement. For a name like "Startup alias Bartlett" the most likely explanation is that a member of the Bartlett family left someone from the Startup family something in a will. Quite often it would be a lease of land so the Startups would then refer to themselves Startup alias Bartlett to cement their claim on the land.
Having said this, sometimes this was even more confused by the order of the alias changing ie "Startup als Bartlett" could interchange with "Bartlett als Startup" and sometimes the name swap became permanent so that what was originally the Startup family would eventually transmogrify into the Bartlett family or vice versa.
If you want to get to the bottom of this your should check out all the Bartlett wills/marriage settlements/deeds in the right area/time as well as the Startup ones. My guess is you will find a Startup/Bartlett marriage somewhere upstream of the first Startup als Bartlett.

Thanks for that - in fact, since posting my first message I sent for a received quite a few Wills for the family which connected with mine, so am getting there.
Thanks again, Jill

I have an interest in the Startup alias Bartletts of Bampton.
Your Snoswell connection I believe is the marriage to Marte Bartlett. Do you have any other details?
