Hello
I am searching for shipping records to Australia for Catherine HACKLER b. 1849 Germany.
I have a marriage record in1868 for George SCOTT (b. c1846 Scotalnd) & Catherine HACKLER at Cooma, NSW.
I have found records for 4 children James, Christina, Margaret & Hanorah.
George died 1934 & is buried at Rookwood. I have a death date for Catherine of 23 May 1927 however I am unable to find a record. I have also not been able to find a Naturalisation record. Any leads would very much be appreciated. Thank you.

Catherine of 23 May 1927 however I am unable to find a record.
Have you searched here -
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
Spelling variations in names can make it difficult at times, to find naturalisation records. There is also a possibility that Catherine was not naturalised.
Buried at Rookwood Presbyterian, Sec 5E, Row 14, Grave#1253
SCOTT George Date of death 8 Apr 1934 aged 88 years.
Our father, inserted by his children
I gather you have a family tree that you are validating the records. Does it name Catherine's parents?
Cheers

No mention of Catherin's parent's & I have tried several name variations looking for her entry into Australia. I know that she was here by 1868 for her marriage in Cooma, NSW. I can not find her name on a shipping passenger list.

Catherine's death notice is here http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/16375313?searchTerm=catherine%20scott There were more children than you have on your first post. Use George as the father's name and Cooma as the place when you search the BDM - it looks as though Catherine was "Catherine Dorothy". The "Darcel" could be a mistranscription as Martin appears to be their son from the death notice. You can cross check children's marriages on BDM from the death notice.

Thanks Debra, I will follow up on the names in the death notice.
I am still looking for Catherine's arrival into Australia.

As Catherine SCOTT's listed residence was in Leichardt when she died then this would be her death registration:
SCOTT CATHERINE d. 1927 NEWTOWN #9540
Parents: GEORGE & MARY A

Thanks Merlin.
I'm wondering if Catherine arrived in Australia with any family members & wondering if anyone has access to immigration records for any HACKLER who arrived in Austrlai prior to 1868.

I'll have a look though my German emigration cd's & books to see if I can find anything for you. But I am thinking that her name is not spelt correct on the marriage registration, could be more like HINKLER or something similar :)
Does the marriage certificate say she is from Germany?

Hi Dustyrover,
Checked all my German immigration resouces I have & can see nothing for a Catherine Hackler (or similar) within them.
I asked if the marriage certificate says she is from Germany?
Do you have this information?
-
Hi Dustyrover, I am a direct descendant of Catherine Hackler (Maria Dorothea 'Catherine' Flegler). Like you I had exactly the same information from the NSW BDM (marriages) where she is named Hackler, until earlier this year when I visited the Cooma Historical Society. George Scott and Catherine Flegler are my GG grandparents. George S was born in Perthshire Scotland and Maria Dorothea 'Catherine' Flegler was born in Bettingen Germany. George and Catherine were married at the residence of William Stevens (just outside of Cooma), also my GG grandfather. Eventually a son of George and Catherine (James) married the daughter of William Stevens (Ellen) - I am a direct descendant of James and Ellen. Maria Dorothea 'Catherine' Flegler emigrated from Germany aboard the 'Catteaux Wattel' in 1855 as a child, her parents were Johann Georg Flegler born Bettingen Germany and her mother Anna Maria Diehm born Urphur Germany. Catherine Scott died at 2a Moore St Leichhardt and is buried at Rookwood; George Scott died at 21 Ilka St Leichhardt. I have heaps of information, would be interested in knowing how you fit into the family. Having a name Dustyrover, I gather you are Australian as I am.

Sorry Dustyrover, I did not explain how Hackler became Flegler and later Flakelar. I can only think somehow someone recorded the name incorrectly, as documents prior to George and Catherine's marriage have the name correctly recorded. On arrival in Sydney Johann Georg Flegler was sponsored by James McArthur, the son of John and Elizabeth Macarthur - he was employed at Camden Park before moving on to the Cooma area. The name evolved to 'Flakelar' with the marriage of John Georg Fleglar when he married Elizabeth O'Neill in 1871. So those by the name Fleglar (and all its variations: Flagler, Flegler, Hackler etc) and those by the name Flakelar are all related.

Hey I am too a descendant of the fleglars that migrated to Sydney. We found their names on the welcome wall in darling harbour and my mum told me bout how the fleglars changed their name to flakelar so they wouldn't be known as Germans because it was around the time of the war

I am a direct descendent of Catherine FLEGLER (or Flakelar) and George Scott.
My father is Thomas Patrick Scott and his father is Martin Scott who is a son of Catherine b 1849 and George Scott b 1846.
Thomas Patrick Scott has three children Moira, Anne and Paul all living in NSW Australia
My late father had one sister who is Ann Veronica McGinley (nee Scott). She is alive and well and turns 100 in April 2011.
Any information you can give me about the history of the Flakelar and Scott families would be appreciated
