On all census's g grandfather born 1855 Ford, Northumberland. Birth certificate (only one of 2 births that match criteria) reads New Haggerston. Since the census return was more than likely oral, would it be probable that ggf would have said Ford in lieu of New Haggerston. I think I am barking up the wrong tree!

what is great grandfather's name ??- we can check to see if there is another of a similar name

William Douglas, wish it wasn't such a common name lol. I know nothing about him. My g mother his daughter was shipped off to NZ at age 23 and severed all contact with family and NEVER spoke of them.
-
Oh, I do know via his marriage cert (1884) that his fathers name was Thomas Douglas and was deceased.
-
which Regn District is relevant to the New Haggerston PoB ?
FORD would be in the GLENDALE District
On the 1861 census - is he the Grandson shown born in FORD ? Dwelling in LANTON ?
If so, the census has him as c1852, so this may be him ?
Births Dec 1851
Douglas William James Glendale 25 288
hmmm, by 1871 that lad has taken his grandparents surname of Henry.

Why do you think it would be oral? The enumerator did not fill in the schedule (except for two sections) it was filled in by or on behalf of the head of the family. It is a common myth that a census enumerator knocked on doors and asked who was present, and then wrote down the details, often mis-hearing, or mis-spelling. There may have been isolated examples of that having been done, but this is very rare!

this is possibly William and his father Thomas in 1861, given the move to Gateshead
Thomas E Douglas 29 Welham Norhumberland
Mary E Douglas 27 Haydon Bridge Northumberland
William Douglas 5 born Newcastle
Matthew Douglas 3 Newcastle
Thomas Douglas 20 nephew, Widenhen Norhumberland
Gateshead

thats only one census then where he shows FORD as his Birthplace ?
-
I would say given brother's birth reg as
Matthew Douglas
sept qtr 1859
Newcastle Upon Tyne 10b 9
this is probably your William
William Douglas
Sept qtr 1855
Newcastle Upon Tyne 10b 34

Even 1871 just says Newcastle, unless I have the wrong William....
RG10; Piece: 5051; Folio: 5; Page: 4;
would have probably helped knowing William's daughters name so that we could match the right censuses together before working back.
-
Well, I followed Thomas and Mary through and Thomas is still alive in 1891... definitely not deceased.
Perhaps its a different William then who made up a name for his father?
-
no... he also quotes Ford in the 1911 census
married 25 years
guess this is the marriage then?
William Hendry Douglas
sept qtr 1884
Gateshead 10a 978

I thank everyone for your help, you're wonderful. William Hendry Douglas married Annie Walker had 14 children (lost 7) are listed on the 1891 census in Gateshead on Burdon St, 1901 Warwick St, 1911 South St., and yes he is only listed once I think as born in Ford, the rest just read Northumberland. Having said that and knowing so very little in fact I started out with my grand mothers maiden name and her mother's maiden name, found the marriage in 1884 and am trying to work back from that. I have had hunches and have bought several birth and marriage certificates for his father Thomas but gosh without family input I am working on assumptions. i.e. if Ford was birthplace, then parents would have lived within a ten mile radius as they were labourers, would have walked everywhere. Yes, it was just a guess that enumerators wrote on the census papers, shame on me, schools have existed for eons lol. I am going to travel to the UK next year and will endeavor to glean as much info as possible. :P

is that middle name HENDRY crystal clear on the actual Marriage papers?
wondering if it was HENRY ..... which would then link to the 1861 grandson.
-
Yes, it is spelled Hendry. I have tried all variables, but have yet to find him in the 1871 or 1881 census for both Durham and Northumberland counties. Sorry about slow reply just returned from work. :)
