Hello: This is my first visit, so I hope I don't violate any established customs or courtesies.
One set of my maternal Great Grandparents was Arthur Lusk and Ellen Flack (or Fleck, it varies), and one set of paternal Grandparents was Nelson Skinner and Emily Patterson.
Arthur and Ellen were married in a Presbyterian Church at Gransha, Islandmagee on June 1st, 1865. Arthur's father was also Arthur Lusk, shoemaker, and Ellen's father was Robert Flack, farmer. I can find no records of either family before that. I was in Islandmagee last year and found Flack tombstones in Ballypriormore Cemetary, but no Robert.
Nelson and Emily were married in a Church of Ireland in Belfast on October 22nd, 1911. I'm OK with Nelson's family but I can find no trace of Emily, at least nothing definite. Her Marriage record shows her father as Joseph Patterson, but I don't know the name of her mother. I've tried to obtain her birth record, but the only one I can find which may be her shows the father as John. I found a 1911 census entry for 7, Lebanon Street, Belfast, which shows the occupants as Emily Patterson, Widow, and her son Samuel and daughter Emily. The age for the daughter is right and she did have a brother named Samuel ( as well as brother Joseph and sister Isabella), but I can't be certain.I live in Canada so any help that may be offered is truly appreciated.
Many thanks, Brian

My, they were a prolific pair weren't they? Thank you for that, I knew about Abby, and I remember hearing about a couple of the others, but my grandmother, Ellen Lusk, was born in 1884 and another sister, Annie, a bit after that. I found another 1911 census record where Ellen, the mother, lives with daughter Annie and her husband, Robert Lacey, and son James and daughter Nellie (Ellen), my grandmother at 62, Shore Road in Greencastle. I remember several visits to that house when I was a youngster.

Aghadowey: I've tried the link you sent and can't find anything other than a few records pertaining to an Arthur Lusk, none to Ellen. What am I doing wrong and how do I find the civil register you mention?
Thanks.........Brian

Go to www.familysearch.org- then to Advanced Search which takes you to this page- http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp. Put in 'Arthur Lusk' for father and 'Ellen' for mother and NOTHING else. Click search and 7 results will appear.
Civil index in on LDS Pilot site-

Hi,
I have found an Joseph Patterson who married Emily Kyles in St.Annes Church of Ireland, Belfast, on 6 Oct 1876. They had at least one child, Isabella, born in 1877. I can find no other record of a Joseph Patterson marrying an Emily.
Regards

Hi Finiston,
I also live in Canada & finding info in Ireland is not easy but the great people here on RootsChat have been wonderful.
I have researched my McCalmont family in Islandmagee & have a few Flack's as witnesses on Islandmagee marriage certs. They may not be your relatives or of use to you now but I've found all information to be valuable eventually.
David Flack & James Flack witnesses at 22 Feb. 1848 marriage
William H. Flack witness at 23 Jan. 1855 marriage
James Flack witness at 20 Jan. 1864 marriage
I also have a birth registration cert for Eliza Jane McCalmont born 26 Jan. 1905 at Knockagh, Carrickfergus daughter of William McCalmont & Rosina Lusk.
Good hunting.
J.A.M.

You people are marvellous, thank you so much. I've made more progress in one day, thanks to you, than I did in a year of groping around in the dark.
Aghadowey, thanks for the tips on using family search, Kingskerswell, I think you have found my Great-grandparents, thank you, and J.A.M., as you say, I'm sure all information has the potential to become valuable at some stage. If you need any more about James Flack, I have some information from my visit to Islandmagee last year.

Hi Finiston
My grandmother was Emily Patterson (father -John) and I do believe that John had a brother Joseph. We could be related. My Emily was born in 1902 and her father John was born 1862/63, got married in St Annes (C of I) to Eliza Jane McCoubrey on 05/03/1883. John's father was called Andrew. Do any of those names sound familiar?
Other than that, I haven't had much luck with my paternal side of the family in Belfast.
If I find out anything else that might be of interest I'll keep you in mind.

Hello Frances:
Thanks for the message, but I'm afraid that it is unlikely that we are related. You can never be certain of course, but my Emily was born in the Belfast workhouse in 1889. Her father is listed as John Patterson and her mother is Emily Kyles. The situation is confusing though, because the only marriage record I can find indicates that Emily Kyles married Joseph (not John) Patterson in Shankill Parish in 1876.
Sorry for taking so long to answer, we've been in Yorkshire for two weeks researching my wife's family.

Hello, I am also looking for Fleck/Flack. My ggg grandparents, Ellen Cullen married Joseph Flack in Banbridge Armagh.....Joseph's father was Robert Flack. When Joseph went to Scotland the surname went to Fleck as far as I can see in the census...….. I am having no luck finding, Ellen (Eleanor) or Joseph's births as yet, So as a result I am also stuck on my Flack/Flecks !!!!! Grrrrr…….but we must never give up!!!! good luck with your searching.

Im sure we are related to the Flacks in particular William Flack Islandmagee and his daughter Sophia Flack who married a John Bigger :)
