Hello ,
Trying to find any information on Margaret Anderson b. abt. 1861 India. (name was actually Margherita but went by Margaret.) Her father was John Anderson trumpet major in RHA, sister was Rosina or Annie, brother John. The family moved to England around 1880, and settled near London. (sorry can't be more precise). Margaret married and had family. Any help very much appreciated. Having hard time finding her.
Kind regards, awp.

Tricky
Any ideas on when she marries? She could marry before any census after their return.
Do you have a connection detail through any of the family?
I looked for Marg* Anderson with India but not getting far - added father John but nothing
Thought I'd look for Rosina as Ros* and all I could see was this Rosalie a young wife of a John but he is far from a trumpet major - perhaps he had a change
1881
John C. C. Anderson 49 India Head Civil Engineer
Rosalie C. Anderson 22 India Wife looks like she was a Thorp as 1901 with mother Sarah
Annette C. Anderson 1 India Daughter
with 4 servants
RG11; Piece: 50; Folio: 52; Page: 4; Kensington
Brompton
1891 Northam Devon
Rasatie C C Anderson 32 Bengal, India Head someone in 2008 put alternative for her name to Rosalie -
Louisa C Anderson 26 Fillundhur, India Daughter
Annette C Anderson 11 Simla, India Daughter
Harry C Anderson 9 Middlesex, London, England Son
John V Anderson 3 Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Son
plus servants
RG12; Piece: 1787; Folio 29; Page 8
That is a family from India with father John and a Annie (Annette) and a John

Hi Ron,
Thanks for reply. There might be a connection to the surname "Walsh". Margaret may have married in India, and come after. Don't have subscription to Ancestry, but they show a Margaret Jane Anderson b.1860 India, Husband James living in Surrey 1891 and 1901 census. Our facts are few, and shaky at best.
Found John the brother. Wife, Frances and two daughters in 1891 census Hampshire.
Thanks for trying. awp

I thought you were looking for a Miss Anderson? Mrs James Anderson is shown as Margaret from India in 1891 and Margt from Bolarum India in 1901 - middle name Jane is not mentioned in either. I looked for a James Anderson marriage to any Margaret Jane and nothing. Looking for one to a Margaret only one close to Wimbledon I could see was in Chelsea 1885 with 2 women James could have married Eggleton Margarette or
Johnson Jane. Checked with Margh* for your women's other spelling but no marriages to James Anderson. Well from 1880.
I suppose your Miss Anderson could marry a James Anderson in India - he is shown as Bank Manager in 1891 an East India Broker in 1901
Does Bolarum give any link?
No marriages to Walsh but there is
Marriages Dec 1891 Chester le S. 10a 741
Anderson Margaret to Atkinson Thomas or Welsh Peter
I could see a Margaret Welsh married to Peter in 1901
or a Margaret Welsh from India
There is in 1901 in Derby but age is wrong
Margaret Walsh abt 1870 India Wife
Ernest Walsh abt 1871 Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England Head
Louise Walsh abt 1884 Bermondsey, London, England Sister
Margaret Walsh abt 1898 Plimlico, London, England Daughter
Gladys Walsh abt 1900 Derby, Derbyshire, England Daughter
Could not see that family in 1891 or find a marriage of an Ernest Walsh to any Margaret until Sep 1897 St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 1027- REES Margaret Louisa, which I presume is that couple as fits with kids ages.
So wrong age - wrong maiden name unless previously married and could not see a Rees to Marg* Anderson marriage
-
I see the brother in 1891 says born 1862/63 East Moris, Punjaub
Could we get to basics which may help find her - what is your interest in Margaret? Have you found their parents on return to UK?
-
Hi again,
All I know for sure is what was stated in original post. Don't know when or where she married, or to whom (Walsh was only a possible connection detail from family member)
Thanks for all your digging there. Will keep information on file may have to come back to it as things develop.
Regards, awp

Ah I was just thinking if the only known family detail we have is the brother in 1891 then perhaps his marriage certificate would help as other family even Margaret might be witnesses. I once picked up a ggm sister's married name as she was witness at ggm wedding.
So Frances A on 1891 born IOW Hampshire and a 1 yo child in 1891 must point to them being this one
Marriages Mar 1889 Alverstoke 2b 757
Anderson John
BARNES Henry
Cook Sarah Ann
Dunford Frances Annie
and sadly in 1901 she is a widow - a cook at workhouse
Frances Ann Anderson abt 1863 Iow, West Cowes, Hampshire, England Servant Easebourne, Sussex
John's marriage cert may well help
Back to Mrs James Anderson if you feel she might be woman you want
The 1891 has these children
C M Anderson abt 1885 Lka, London, England Daughter
M F Anderson abt 1887 Bayswater, London, England Daughter
M E Anderson abt 1889 N Kensington, London, England Daughter
not with parents in 1901 ???? perhaps at boarding school
Note: CM born Lka is a nonsense she was born India Ceylon perhaps a transcriber wanted to put Sri Lanka
So that does indicate James and Margaret married in India.
Looked for births for other two as you might want to purchase a cert to see mothers maiden name
Births Jun 1887
Anderson Mary Forrie Paddington 1a 21
Anderson May Florence Pancras 1b 181
Births Sep 1888
ANDERSON Maud Ella Kensington 1a 74

Hi,
Already have marr. cert for John Anderson and Francis Annie, witness names unfamiliar...looks like Philip Vokes and Mary Anne Brewer. Groom's father stated as John Anderson , occupation Trumpet major RHA.
John died 1898, hard times ensued. While Mum in workhouse, children in orphanage, all reunited at later time.
Have details of this line, but can't find any clues for sisters Margaret and Annie. Or their parents for that matter.
May need to spend time in records out of India.
Thanks for efforts. awp

The IGI has a Margaret Jane ANDERSON, born 17 Jan 1861 at Fyrabad, West Bengal, parents John and Eliza.

Hi,
I think that is her. IGI also shows the younger sister Annie, who had a twin that passed away as a child, Lily. They were born 26 Apr.1869 Lahore. Parents John and Elizabeth. The name Elizabeth is new information. Son, John was born abt. 1862 or 63. Cannot find him in records.
The story is that when little Lily died at young age, it was a huge motivator to move back to U.K. (I guess they felt it would not of happened if they were in England.) I do not know when they moved but there is record of the father's military career 1853-1879. Not sure if it was all spent in India. The son, John married in 1889 Alverstoke. So best guess is they moved to U.K. between 1879 and 1889.
Have lost track of parents and the girls. awp

Following Ian finding IGI I have looked in 1891 census for a John born 1800-1840 (making his 20-60 when Margaret born) with wife Elizabeth in England mainly London but I checked some others - none of them had occupations that looked like someone back from India / Army
What you say about Lily sounds likely. a 25 year man sounds like a long enough service
Tried looking for Ann* several Anderson born India but parents are wrong
as well as ages
I suppose this was closest with mother Eliza but Annie age wrong
1901 Acton Mdx
Eliza Anderson abt 1833 Poona, India Head
Sophia Bermont abt 1854 Bombay, India Daughter
Annie Walter abt 1856 Bombay, India Daughter
Martha Wendroth abt 1877 German Subject, Germany Servant
Jane Dunne abt 1857 Ireland Servant
1891 there was an Annie born 1870/1 but parents David and Elizabeth and I could see her baptism on IGI
Is it possible the family stayed in India?
-
Don't just try with birthplace as India. You are more likely to have success with East Indies.
Ian C
-
Of course
I look generally looking for India and then by year born range looking for something like some place in Asia
Also generally for Lahore and Bengal. And also with known parents.
Also Scotland lots of Anderson are Scottish
Some from East Indies around
This is good Annie Anderson abt 1879 Sth Hackney, India Inmate Edgeworth, Lancashire
India turns out to a flowery London - I've posted an Alternate.

The trumpet-major was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. With no trace in England, I am wondering if he kept going and went all the way home? He was away a long time, I can appreciate the desire to see family.
