Title: 1851 census Dorking, Dibble
Post by: Magrat on Wednesday 23 March 05 21:07 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I wonder if anyone could have a look on the 1851 census for Lucy Dibble born 1797-1800 in Wootton, Surrey.  In 1841 she was living in Westcot, Dorking with lots of children and was a widow her husband having died in early 1841.

Her children that were with her in 1841 are James (20), Harriet (18), John (16), Jane (14), Lucy (10), Hannah (10), Eliza age 8, Alfred (5) and Henry (3) (my gggrandfather). (Ages as in 1841)

I imagine that by 1851 most of the children will have left home except perhaps Eliza, Alfred and Henry.

Thank you.

Magrat

Hi Carol & Catherine,

Thank you very much for the information.  Since posting the request I had found out that the mother Lucy Dibble had died in 1847.  I also found Henry and Alfred in 1861 living with their older sister Jane in London.

It is good to see where they were in 1851 and their sisters Hannah and Lucy.

Thank you for all you efforts I really appreciate the information, after learning of their mothers death I had wondered what had happened to the younger children.

Cheers
Magrat

That was clever of Carol to pick that up from March of this year ;)

Do you know the maiden name of Lucy?  Only asking as I have the registers of Wotton on fiche so could look-up her baptism.

Hi Jane,

The maiden name of Lucy is Bust or Burst.  It is usually referred to as Bust but when I got the birth certificate of Henry the name looked more like Burst.  It would be great if you could find her baptism in Wotton, I would be over the moon with that information.

Thank you for the offer and everyone's help.

Cheers

Hi Magrat,
Something interesting for you ::)

The index I have covers Abinger, Wotton & Oakwood.  Nothing under the name BURST.  The name BUST only has an Anne & Edward.  For the name BURSTER it refers you to the name BRISTOW.  BRISTOW has the following variations;
BRISTOWE/BRISTOWE/BRYSTOWE/BURSTARD/BURSTER/BURSTOW/BUSTARD.

The nearest I could get was a baptism of,
LUCY d/o John Tickner & Elizabeth BRISTOW, 18/12/1803, Illegitimate.

I then went through the Wotton PR's to double check for any Lucy between 1797-1807...nothing, so the above could well be yours.
Hope that helps,

Jane

Hi Jane,

That was very quick work.  Thank you so much for you trouble it is certainly very interesting information. She has been very elusive and I hadn't found anyone else in the area with the name Bust or Burst so perhaps that is her.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Just so happened I photographed Lucy's gravestone today. The death date is 21st July 1846, and that of her husband James, March 5 1841.
