Hi
Looking for details of Charlotte HARRIS b in Stalbridge, Dorset about 1813-1816. I need details of her parents, siblings, etc. According to her Marriage Cert of 1849, Her father's name was John.
I can't find her or her family in the 1841 Census. She appears in the 1851 and subsequent Census' under her married name POMEROY.
There were mary HARRIS' in Stalbridge at the time but I can't tie down her family.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance

Hi,
Are you familiar with the Dorset OPC site?
The OPC for Stalbridge has various records available, including parish registers, and is offering look-ups.

Hi,
Dorset FHS have transcribed the registers for Stalbridge; not sure what they charge for a look-up but details should be on their site.

I beleive a number of HARRIS families are listed.
I'm in South Africa, so it's difficult to visit the Records Offices.
Thanks in advance

Thank you
The marriage took place 8 years later in 1849 in Totnes, Devon. John's occupation was given as "Gentleman", residence "Holne" which is, I think in Devon. It's possible that they had moved to Devon at some point.
Any leads would be helpful.

Have searched the 1841 census for Devon and Dorset cant find any more possibilities yet unless shes been mistranscribed and have tried just Charlotte and gone through the H Surnames but no luck. The Holne 1841 and 1851 in transcribed on the Genuki site no John Harris there would have thought he might be there in 1851?
Does it give a full address for Charlotte on the marriage cert?
John being a Gentleman narrows the search down a bit for him at least if we could find him.
Welsh Lady
-
Hi Welsh Lady
Thank you very much for that. I also looked through the 1841 Holne Census on Genuki. The Marriage Certificate only gives "Holne" as John Harris' place of residence. I've also tried a number of searches for John and Charlotte in Devon but no luck yet. The writing of "Gentleman" is rather indistinct, so If you would like to mail me at mpomeroy @ intekom.co.za (remove spaces), I can send you a copy to see if you can decipher it.
Thank you

Thank you.
I have details of Samuel and Sarah Harris' family. Here are some of them:
Jane bap 2 Dec 1804 would be 36 in 1841 (Census shows 25)
Charlotte bap 13 Jan 1811 d 23 May 1811
Sarah bap 13 Jan 1811
Henry bap 5 Apr 1812
Charlotte bap 20 Aug 1813 would be 27 in 1841 (Census shows 25)
So they had both a Jane and 2 Charlotte's but no Fanny.
John and Ann Harris could be a possibility. How far is Sydling St Nicholas from Stalbridge?
My Charlotte was definitey born in Stalbridge according to all Census Records.

the 1841 cencus is rounded down for adults to the nearest 5 so charlotte 25yrs could indeed be your girl

Charlotte's marriage Certificate of 17 April 1849 in Totnes shows her age as 34, ie born 1815, however, Census' from 1851 to 1891 show her birth year as 1813.
According to the Certificate, "Residence at the Time of Marriage": Holne
"Father's Name and Surname": John Harris. "Rank or Profession of Father": Gentleman (the best that I can make of partly faded writing. It's not clear whether he was alive at the time of the Marriage.
I am beginning to think that she and her father may have been living in the Totnes/Holne area by 1841 and no longer in Stalbridge.

HI
Charlotte was the daughter of Samuel Harris and Sarah Light. Charlotte was born abt 20th june 1813 and married william Pomeroy. We descend from her brother Mark Light Harris. Samuel Harris was born 27/12/1774 in Stalbridge and married Sarah light dtr of Mark Light and Mary on 11/4/1796 in Lyndlinch Dorset. Samuel was the son of George Harris and Mary Duffet. His siblings were Jenny born abt 22/5/1766, Thomas born abt 31/12/1767, Phillip born 1771, George born abt 20/5/1775, Daniel born abt 27/4/1779 and Ann 11/5/1772. George and Mary were married in Stalbridge on 15/7/ 1765. Mary was the daughter of John Duffett and Tamar Jeanes. George was the son of George Harris born abt 8/7/1714 and Mary Beesley born 1717. His siblings were Jenny born 9/7/ 1743, Thomas b 1746, Samuel b 12/7/ 1748, Mary 12/3/1749. This George { 1714} was the son of James Harris and Melior Randal. James was born 1683 Stalbridge and died abt 1730. Melior was born abt 1687 in Stlabridge and died therein 1756. They had George and William [ 9/3/1707],Betty [ 28/6/1711] , James [ 3/5/ 1716] Hannah [ 25/6/1723], Joseph [ 19/6/1725],Samuel [ 20/1/1729] and ann [ 1736]. We have not been able to go back further but have identified a Haddy harris in the doomsday Book from Dorset which may well be the ancestor of this family line.
We have a family line that goes to South Africa a few generations on. Would be keen to swap info.

The Fanny Harris mentioned is the daughter of Lucy Harris who is the duaghter of Samuel Harris and sarah Light. Fanny I believe was born abt 1840 in London . She is mentioend as living with my husbands great great grandad William Henry Harris in the 1861 english census. My notes indicate that Fanny, Agnes and William Henry their cousin were living with their aunt Ann Harris a pastry cook and confectioner in 1861 at 114 High St Stalbridge.
I do not have birth dates for Fanny or Agnes. Ann was listed as married in 1861 but I cannot find a husband for her.

Hi
Thanks for the info. I am aware of the family of Samuel and Sara Harris including Charlotte (bap 20 Aug 1813).
The marriage Certificate for my gr gr grandparents, Charlotte Harris and William Pomeroy in 1849, however, shows Charlotte's father's name as John Harris. So I'm not sure whether "your" Charlotte is the same person as "my" Charlotte.
I am in the process of following up on a John Harris (b Sherbone, Dorset in 1783 who married Ann Collard of Hillfarrance, Sommerset on 24 April 1810 in Hillfarrance, near Taunton. They apparently lived in Stalbridge and had 3 daughters, Jane (b 1811), Charlotte (b 1813) and Selina (b 1819). This investigation is in the early stages, so I'm not able to confirm these details yet.
If you want to compare furher notes on the Harris family please mail me at (*)
Best Wishes
Martin Pomeroy

Hi to "Harris of Oz"
In regard to Fanny Harris, in the 1841 Census for High St, Stalbridge:
Jane Harris 30 Confectioner
Charlotte Harris 25 Confectioner
Fanny Harris 2
Further the 1851 Census shows Ann (51), her parents, Samuel (75) and Sarah (77) living at the same address in Stalbridge with Fanny (11).
Could this Fanny be the daughter of Lucy Harris, born in London and who was living with her Aunt Ann - "Pastry Cook and Confectioner" at 114 High St, Stalbridge in the 1861 Census?
If so, what would the relationship be between Ann. Charlotte, Jane and Fanny?
Regards
Martin

Hi Harris of Oz, I am researching my Harris ancestry.my research has led me to believe that my ggggrandfather was Mark Light Harris. My ggrandfather was Edwin Harris son of Samuel Harris who I think was the son of Mark.Samuel emigrated to NZ in 1857 with his wife Amelia , daughter Jessie and son Edwin. He was 28 at this time making his birth date 1829.does this tally with your research or am I totally on the wrong track?

Hi denysenz
Mark Light Harris was born 21/3/1797 in Stalbridge Dorset to Samuel Harris and Sarah Light. The Lights are a family from Lydlinch and go back many generations. Mark was a dairyman and went to london with his younger brothern Edward Richard. Mark and Sarah had 3 children William Henry Harris born 1838 Paddington who is my husbands gg grandad, Samuel Harris born 1828 Haverfield Middlesex and Elizabeth jane born abt 1843 in Paddington. Elizabeth jane married Barnard Boddy Deane who was considerably older than she was on 2/12/1867 at All Saints Paddington Westminster. They had 4 children Robert Deane b 1859, Ernest F 1861, Bernard M 1869 and Frederick G 1875. William Henry married Charlotte Winckler and they had 5 children frank believed to have died in infancy, Charles William born 1862, Ellen born 1866. Herbert henry born 1867 and Walter born 1870. Charlotte died in 1870 of TB and William Henry and his son Walter emigrated to Australia between 1883-1885. I do not have any further information on Samuel but I have a lot on Mark light Harris family .
I would be happy to send you the full gedcom which goes back to 1683 if you go to the personal message sectoin I will list my email for you.

Hi Harris of Oz.
With ref to your post of 28 May 2010, I have now confirmed through another Harris contact that "my" Charlotte Harris' parents were John Harris b. 1783 Sherborne, Dorset and Ann Collard b. about 1790 Henstridge, Somerset.
Children:
Jane b 1811 Stalbridge
Charlotte b 1813 Stalbridge married William Pomeroy 17 Apr 1849 Totnes, Devon
(Her father's 1852 Will refers to her as " Mrs Charlotte Pomeroy")
Selina b 1819 Stalbridge
Harriet b 1826 Taunton, Somerset
Henry b 1832 Taunton, Somerset
So, although 3 children were born in Stalbridge (I haven't been able to locate any birth or baptism records yet), they don't appear to have an obvious link to your Stalbridge Harris families.
Regards
Martin (South Africa)

Hi. Just entering this thread as it came up in a search. My immediate Harris family (William Charles Harris and Elizabeth Brown) from Aldgate, London emigrated to Australia (first Tasmania, then Melbourne) in 1884.
I have 6 small but reliable DNA matches who have a Harris family in Stalbridge, Dorset, including one that includes Mark Light Harris (Samuel Harris and Sarah Light) in the tree. The six are at first glance unrelated families, but I am looking for a link to my London family by building a research tree.
One 4th cousin match that shares a match with a known member of my Harris family includes: Samuel Harris (1748-1828) married Jenny Duffet (1746-1816), their daughter Alice Harris (1779-1879) married John Lilly Ralph (1774-1850). I have not yet come across a Charlotte.
Love to correpond with any of the posters here if they think our families may be linked. So many Harris in Stalbridge and London!!
Margaret Stebbing, Melbourne, Australia.
