I'm looking for any information please for William Woodley born. 1709 in Hagbourne, Berkshire. I have a possible marriage for William in East Hagbourne in 1732 to Mary? I would be grateful if anyone has access to the parish registers for East Hagbourne or Hagbourne and could offer to look-up William for me. Confirmation of his baptism and his marriage - and even better to know who Mary was - would be excellent. Parents for William would be an ;D !
Very many thanks.

Hi Angie,
From an Oxfordshire FHS CD of Hagbourne PRs:
baptised March 19 1709 William Woodley s/o John & Sarah
John Woodly married Sarah Gray 28 Sep 1707.
Sorry, I can't help with the East Hagbourne marriage as I don't have those PRs.

Hi Jill,
That's marvellous, thank you. Parents for William at last ! Thank you again much appreciated.

Hi Angie,
I have the Hagbourne PRs (ex OFHS) and the baptism of William Woodley is as recorded by Jill.
Likewise the marriage of John & Sarah in 1707 - no other details are listed.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a baptism for either John or Sarah in Hagbourne.
These registers also include West Hagbourne & Cosgote and a part of Hagbourne is now in Didcot.
I have those PRs and will have a look for you.
I have these burials from the Hagbourne PRs;
4-1-1732 Sarah Woodly - wife of John
13-6-1749 John Woodly.

Hi Angie,
I have looked in Didcot but drawn a blank there.
Sorry can't be more helpful.
Alan
PS. Forgot to mention there is a baptism for John Woodley 25-9-1659 in Blewbury s/o John - no other details.
May be a connection.

Thanks Alan & Jill. That's excellent. That does look interesting re John Woodley in Blewbury, I also found a possible in Harwell c. 1680, it will dificult to prove which may be which as I don't expect the burial gave an age? (for either John or Sarah) I would think that is most definately the death/burial information for John and Sarah tho' and I found a possible baptism for Sarah Gray in East Ilsley in 1681 to possible parents Richard Gray and Anne Whistler.
Would you mind very much having another look at Hagbourne or East Hagbourne Alan for a marriage for William Woodley and Mary ? c. 1732/3 I'm only using this date as I believe their first child Rebekah Woodley was born in 1733 in Hagbourne.
Very many thanks
Kind Regards

Hi Angie,
I could not find William Woodley's marriage in the Hagbourne PRs nor in East
Ilsley PRs. Are you using the IGI to find Wm.Woodley's marriage? If so , there
are several listed for Harwell which you should ignore as they are submitted and
the entries do not appear in my set of PRs. There is however, a marriage for
William Woodley & Mary PARSONS on 5-10-1718 in Compton Beauchamp which may be
relevant.
I did find a baptism for Sarah GREY dau of Richard & Anne Grey 17-4-1681
in East Ilsley
The marriage was 7-11-1673 East Ilsley Richard GREY & Annie WHIS(T)LER no
other details.
In the Hagbourne registers a Rebecca Woodley dau of William & Mary baptised 6-5-1733 followed by another Rebecca
baptised 30-7-1758 - perhaps there were two similarly named families as I couldn't find a burial for Rebecca.
If you would like more info please let me know.

Thanks so much Alan, much appreciated. The marriage in 1718 would be too early for 'my' William as he was baptised in 1709; ofcourse he could have been born a little earlier than his baptism but as his parents married in 1707, kinda figure that is probably about the right date for him.
The only information I have for their marriage is a submitted entry 'About 1732' East Hagbourne to Mary ? and, if you are unable to find them, seems that the information is incorrect! If you are familiar with the area, could you suggest what other parishes I might try? This is not a new problem! A lot of the Woodley men just turn up in the parish and have their families and I struggle to find where they have come from....
Thank you so much for your time and effort in helping (again)
Very kind regards.. Angie

Hi Angie,
I was about to do a search of neighbouring parishes to Hagbourne when I found this marriage in Blewbury;
11-11-1734 William Woodly to Sarah ELTOME
Could this be the link? I know you said his wife's name was Mary - but is that a fact?.

Hi Alan, that's an interesting find. The only facts that I have with regard to William are his baptism to parents John & Sarah (as you and Jill kindly found for me) I have a list of children from the IGI to a William and Mary Woodley in Hagbourne; what I don't have is the connection between these children and the William we have found...
In brief, I'm looking for the baptism of Thomas Woodley c. 1740 ( married Hagbourne) to possible father William - again a submitted entry - you kindly found his marriage in Hagbourne for me a while ago, to Mary Harwood in 1761; but you were unable to find a baptism in Hagbourne. I was looking at William & (Mary?) as possible parents and a link somewhere there, but I think you have found a new 'clue' with William and Sarah and Blewbury..
Thank you so very much Alan for your time and efforts and I'm certain I shall be in touch again (soon)
Kind Regards

Hello Poldogs and a very warm welcome to Rootschat ;D
I feel, in order for you to get the interest and the information you are looking for with ref to Thomas Woodley and family it would be more useful to you to start a new post for yourself. It's very easy... Firstly, do you know where Thomas came from ? if you do then it would be useful to put your post on the appropriate County board, if you are unsure, then post on the Beginners board. Secondly, do you have any further information for Thomas Woodley and /or Sophia Talbot for instance do you know where they were from? when/and/or where they married ? There seems to be quite an age gap here if Thomas was born 1816 and had his son Edward Woodley in 1878 he would have been 62 (not impossible I know) Do you know anything more about Edward? do you know where he was born? All these points, if you know them will help others to find the information you are looking for.
I hope this helps, I shall look out for your post and see if I can help.
Kind Regards

I have this William Woodly as of Hendred. Sarah was d/o Thomas and Elizabeth bapt Upton 5 May 1711. At time of marriage her residence was Blewbury. Marriage was by licence, bondsman Thomas Eltom - presumably her father
Their first child, Susan baptised in Blewbury then some later ones in East Hendred

May or may not be relevant - there are some lovely Woodley wedding photos posted on the "Old Didcot, Harwell and Hagbourne" Facebook page.

You have a photo up of my mum's Aunty Mabel. I remember we visited her regularly up the road in Arborfield.
