:(Checked up, not the right John Downie, was hopeful, thanks, keep trying. just cannot find him since 1863 birth of his Daughter, Margaret in Paisley.

Have you tried to English Census for John Downie Snr. What other information do you have on the family? Did they continue to stay in Paisley?
-
From your info this looks like the children in 1881 but with grandparents Tyson it doesn't make sense. :-\
11 Sancel
John Tyson 70 born England
Margaret Tyson 74 born England
John Downie 19 born England, Blacksmith (grandson)
Margaret Downie 17 born Paisley (grandaughter)
I have found this family in 1871. Was John junior a blacksmith?

Nel

Thanks for your replies, we have the Downie children with their Grandparents, who are actually Aunt and Uncle of their Mother Jane , (complicated) in 1871 and 1881 census, Mum lived until 1899 and died in Govan Glasgow. although she didn't live with her children, but son John signed her death Certificate . Dad John Downie has just vanished. Cannot find any trace after his name on daughter Margaret's Birth Certificate in 1863, deceased on son John's marriage 1887
Any help or clues would be appreciated.
Thanks

Wondered if anyone going to the Mitchell could check the poor relief records on Jane Downie who died in 1899 for any entries which might show some details on John.!

Hi,
I am also researching this family - my relative Thomas Ward was the last partner/husband of Jane Painting or Downie. Have been unable to find this couple in 1871 census in Scotland or England. Can't find a marriage certificate either - maybe there was no marriage as they were both still married to previous partners?
From Thomas Ward's death certificate in 1891 - he was living at 33 Broomlands, Paisley, married to Jane Tyson or Downie - informant Maggie Dougan, step daughter (present).
Would like more information on this family if anyone can help.
Regards

Roryboy has the 1881 census , Harmony Row, Govan and 1891 Census Paisley for Jane Downie and Thomas Ward. (Do you have them?) As far as we know they never married. Scotfam helped out a lot and also kindly got Parish Relief Records for Jane which states that they co-habited. We too couldn't find them 1871 census together but if memory is correct think there was a Thomas Ward married (not Jane) with a daughter Bridgeton area which we could prove was the same Thomas. Will check with Roryboy tho as Thomas Ward not his relative all information he has will be on Jane.
What relation is Thomas Ward to you which must mean he had children before he was with
Jane.

Thanks seekthem for replying to my query.
Yes, I have the 1881 & 1891 census records for Thomas Ward and Jane Downie. Thomas Ward is the brother of my gggrandfather Robert Ward. By researching Robert Ward's brothers and sisters I'm filling in gaps for the Ward family and when they came to Scotland from Ireland.
Thomas Ward was previously married to Jane Fleming (another Jane) marriage was 17 Jun 1859 New Kirkpatrick, Dunbartonshire. In 1861 census Thomas and Jane were living in Shuttle St Paisley with a 4 year old daughter, Elizabeth Ward. Elizabeth was born well before the marriage - haven't been able to find a relevant birth certificate for her. Sounds like there was a marriage breakdown and Thomas later lived with Jane Painting/Downie. If poor law record states co-habiting there would not seem to be a legal marriage. Is this poor law record available to purchase? Happy to share any info with Roryboy.
The rest of the Ward family (Thomas's mother, brothers and sisters, grandmother & uncle) were also living in Paisley - at 26 Well St in 1861 census and from other certificates seem to be from Killyleagh, Down, Ireland. The research continues.
Thanks and Regards

Jane Downie is still in England on the 1861 census but we couldn't find her either on the 1871 census. Did you find Thomas Wards wife and daughter on a 1871 census without Thomas and if so were they still in Paisley?
Have sent you a personal message.
