Hi
I am looking for Benjamin Cowdroys Marriage to Frances ?? Benjamin is the son of William Cowdroy founder of the Manchester gazette.
Benjamin and Frances are recorded living in London on the 1841 census and was both listed as not born in county, they had their first child also in London in 1821.
I hope some one can help solve this mystery! :-\
-
They are in Lambeth in 1851 but although Benjamin's birthplace is readable as Chester - I cannot make out Frances's but she was 51

im thinking could it say plaistow? near west ham??
his grandson was living here in 1901 census... could their be a link in that????
-
Can anyone see the death for frances cowdroy? in lambeth?
Benjamin died in 1851, i got this info from a newspaper article!
-
Before I read Jean's reply, my first thought was Portsea.
Modified - If you look on Findmypast, the original census image is much clearer and is definitely Portsea.
-
and if she was from portsea then they would have been married in london
Portsea is Hampshire
-
A bit far streached... Undecided as he is from Chester
I don't know why you think it is far fetched for a man born in Chester to be married to someone from Portsea, Hampshire. He had obviously travelled to London, so maybe they met there - perhaps Frances was in service or something.

Hi Again
Not found the marriage yet, but I suppose you have the details of Benjamin's baptism? If not, he was baptised on 27 April 1874 at St.Olave, Chester, his parents were William and Sarah.
Lizzie
-
They had a number of children christened in London and two had middle surnames which may (or not) be Frances's maiden name
William Burdett Cowdroy (1821) and Samuel Hawarth Cowdroy (1831)
-
There are more children:
Maria Smith Cowdroy Baptism 25 Dec 1825 parents Benjamin Cowdroy and Fanny Cowdroy
Edward Cowdroy Baptism 15 Feb 1824 Benjamin Cowdroy and Frances Cowdroy
Still no sign of a marriage though.

Thank you everyone,
when i put portsea in to google it came up Portsea Portsmouth PO1 3, UK which i right south of england.
I do have the children information having the middle name smith is quite unusual, i never heard burdett or hawarth before are these surnames??
Regards
Nichol

Yes Portsea is in the south of England. It could be that Frances decided to see the highlife and moved to London.
It did cross my mind that as the births of the children are on line, as is Benjamin's baptism and that of his siblings (and his parents marriage too), it is odd that his and Frances marriage doesn't show up. I wonder if they did actually marry.
In case you haven't got it, the parents marriage:
William Cowdroy to Sarah Powell, 6 April 1774, St.Oswald, Chester, Cheshire
Benjamin had the following siblings:
John James bap. 29.8.1776
Thomas bap.16.3.1779
Marie Elisabeth bap.21.3.1782
Caroline bap.6.1.1791
There also seems to be another child a Mary Powell Cordroy bap. 16.12.1813, but with a different mother, called Martha. The address then was Stalybridge, Cheshire, so this might be a different William Cowdroy.

Benjamin is the son of William Cowdroy founder of the Manchester gazette.
Looking at the following link
http://www.rootschat.com/links/08e8/
it seems to me that Benjamin was possibly the grandson of the original founder of the Manchester Gazette. The Gazette was founded in 1795 and when William died in 1814, his eldest son William took over as Editor.

I too came to the conlution that benjamin is williams founder of manchester gazzetes son. :D
Sarah Died after William, i think! will check when home.
i do remember that william had 4 boys and two daughters when he died.
the only one missing is citizen howarth cowdroy.
i tried to look for wootton Place on the 1861 census as this is where benjamin and frances was on the 1851 census. I think it could be missing.
I found a news paper artical that bejamin passed away in 1851 but i can not seem to find a death for Fances either....was she real.. lol ???
-
OOO sorry just read your message again you say grandson.. i thought son!!??

Hi again Nichol :)
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search
Try putting in Cowdroy in the "Words" "With all the words" box near the bottom of the page; lots of bits come up about various bankruptcies to do with William Jr and Benjamin. Benjamin was at one point in debtors' prison in London!!
Kind regards

What an article :o
I wonder what happened to John James Cowdroy who was baptised in 1779? Perhaps he died young, or perhaps he became "Citizen".
On FreeBMD Benjamin's death is shown as Jun 1851 Newington 4 _44 (looking on Findmypast the missing number looks like a 2).
There are two deaths on FreeBMD of Frances Cowdroys.
Mar 1865 St.Geo.East 1c 381 and
Dec 1866 Manchester 8d 273 (age 64).
If she stayed in London after Benjamin died, then the first one would perhaps be "your" Frances. As she came from Portsea, I can't see her going to live in the North of England.

Thank you Gaie,
Funny you passing on a ling for the london gazett as i actually work for TSO publishers of london gazett..he he
Thanks Lizzie,
If bejamin died in 1851 and fancis in 1865 then she must be on the 1861 census and i cant see her living on her own at the same address as she was at in 1851... dont they usually move in with children??

Added: Just realised, I'd sent you this one already, but it might help other researchers ;)
-
Thought so ;D
can you se the 1861 for frances?
-
There is a burial for a Benjamin Cowdroy on 22nd May 1851 at Nunhead Cemetery, Southwark but he was aged 18. So not Benjamin b1784. Possibly his and Frances's son baptised the same day as John in 1837.
KR
Gaie
-
Possibly... :-\
it was newspaper artical that i found that Benjamin cowdroy son of william cowdroy founder of manchester gazzete died in 1851. ???
(can you send this on to me too please Gaie?)
-
Ok, although the image quite clearly says 18, 1784-1851 is roughly 77-78 years. There is a death reg for another Benjamin Cowdroy in 1838:
Jun Qtr 1838
Lambeth Vol 4 Page 259
Although Benjamin & Frances had a son Benjamin who was baptised in 1837 at St John the Baptist, Lambeth, he does not show up with them in the 1841 census unlike sons Samuel and John, nor in any subsequent census anywhere. So it is likely that the 1838 death is this Benjamin.
In which case, the 1851 burial is probably Benjamin 1784, with a clerical error for age at death. Purchasing the death certificate would confirm.

Citizen Howarth Cowdery died 25 Dec 1828
He married Martha RATHBONE 11 Sep 1816 Manchester Cathedral.
Martha dedicated a stained glass window in the Sandbach parish church to her siblings and husband.
" This window is dedicated to the memory of William Rathbone Esq, barrister at law of the Inner
Temple London, who died on the i'' May 1857 in the 72"'' year of his age; of Harriet Rathbone who
died on the 12"' July 1853 aged 65 years; of Joseph Rathbone who died on the 30*'' January 1810 aged
16 years, sons and daughters of the late John and Mary Rathbone of Sandbach : also of Citizen Howarth
Cowdroy Esq their son in law who died on the 25"' Dec. 1828 in the 34"' year of his age, by their much
loved and very loving sister and widow Martha Cowdroy.
http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofancient00earw/historyofancient00earw_djvu.txt
Martha is living in Tranmere CHS in 1851 with her sister Harriet Rathbone and her son John Rathbone Cowdroy and daughter Emma.
In 1861 Martha is cited as being born in Scotland and is living in Oxton and Woodchurch. Her occupation is described as "Gentlewoman in charge of house".
Her son John Rathbone Cowderoy was by this time married to Emma DARLINGTON and had several children. John was curate of Oxton Parish in Cheshire in 1861. One of his sons Ernest Darlington Cowdrey married Elizabeth JAMIESON in Nov 1877 in West Kensington.
By 1871 Rev. John R Cowderoy and family were living in Fulham London.
The JAMIESON connection is who I am interested in. Elizabeth being the daughter of Alexander Jamieson, Contractor but mother unknown.
