Title: John TRACEY, prisoner of war in WW!
Post by: corisande on Tuesday 06 April 10 13:07 BST (UK)
I am struggling to place this man

John Tracey (or Treacy) who was a POW in Limburg and later Zossen Camp in Germany in WW1 and joined Casements Irish Brigade there.

Casement just records him as a labourer before joining

Keogh (the NCO in charge of the Irish Brigade, and not altogether to be relied on for detail) has him as:-

John Tracey, a big six footer from Tipperary. Tracey supervised the Irishmen's mascot, a red-haired terrier called Rebel, who enjoyed catching the many rats in Zossen camp. Casement just has him down as previously a labourer.

I cannot find a service record nor a pension record. Nor a MIC. One would expect him to be in Royal Irish Regiment if he came from Tipperary, but could be Irish Guards with height. From other evidence I know that he was not in the Munster Fusiliers.

So I have done a lot of searching, and am trying here in case anyone recognises a member of their family

Hiya,

just wondering do you have an approximate date of birth for this man?

I haven't got a lot of information so far for my Treacy family in Tipp but I'm always on the look out! There was a JAMES Treacy in the family who went to England and joined the police force but I'm not sure how accurate it is.

Nothing other than what I have on that linked page

Most of the Irish Brigade were born between 1888 and 1898. That is they signed up around 1912 as regulars and were around 18 at that time. Not many were born before 1880

I'm going to keep this post in mind because I have a lot of gaps right around that time.

Thanks for posting! :)

Thanks Tom

Never thought of it by trying the sibling route.

With your info,  I'll try now by going back round the 1911 and the MIC circle to see if I can track him down

Question - Where did you get the information on James and Catherine Fahey Treacy.
They are my Grandmother's Parents - Catherine Treacy Phelan and I would like to fill in the blanks on her side of the family for our website "thephelanfamily.org"

Thanks Jay Phelan

Somewhere there is a Treacy/ Tracy site going back to 1200,s.?
I was googling for my Thomas Keogh and came upon it as  there was a Thomas Keogh( not mine) and  indicted for murder of a landord called Cambre? along with a Treacy from Roscrea.
Sentence commuted to transportation for Thomas Keogh but Treacy no.
Lots of info about Treacy families..

Google Treacy genealogy in Roscrea and see what comes up.
You might find some of yours on there.

This list has two men Tracy and Treacy, both in the Royal Irish Regiment. Initial appears to be T though.

Hope Dakota53 finds this post.

Unfortunately, Dakota53 hasn't been online here since November 2012, and only posted once, so they may not be back to communicate with you.

Good luck.
