Hi,
I'm looking for help in finding my gr. gr. grandfather Alexander Donaldson, born 1841 in Lasswade. In 1881, i think he might still have been a prisioner in Edinburgh.

Hi Ian,
The age and birthplace is a bit off on this one, but I notice he was a baker in the 1861 census when living with his mother, Isabella. Details obviously may have not came from him at that point. ;D
Address: Court Buildings Police Lock Up, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Alex. Donaldson, m, prisoner, 37, baker (unemployed), b. Edinburgh

Thanks Hume,
I would say that it is him. I don't want to sound ignorant here but, would i be able to get access to his prison records.

Hi Iain,
You could have a look on the National Archives' online catalogue: http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ There could be a record for him there. It will [most likely] give his name, residence, occupation and nature of his crime. Sometimes it names accomplices and victims, depending on the crime.
How do you know he was in prison? Was he still there in 1891 or there in 1871, etc?
