Title: COMPLETED baptism: Jacob Buck c 1754
Post by: taylorwallace on Monday 05 April 10 20:07 BST (UK)
Can anyone help with a baptism for this man who was buried at Christ Church Southwark in 1815 aged "61".
Clues:
He married at St Mary le Bone in  Feb1776 to Catherine Talbot
I have so far traced 3 children Ann 1777 St Sepulchre
                                      Juliet 1779 St Sepulchre
                                 Rebecca 1782  St Saviour Southwark
Nothing on IGI; can anyone add anything?
many thanks
 taylorwallace
PS I see there is another Jacob Buck buried in 1816 Tottenham born c 1749.
Given Valda's comments on the potential vastness of this task, pobably best to regard as completed; I am greatful for having found another child of the marriage through this post so it wasnt a fruitless mission. Although Buck may be quite common; Jacob Buck only appears 14 times on IGI for all years and counties, using exact spelling. tw

Hi

I'm afraid there really isn't enough information for someone to try a baptism lookup for Jacob. St Marylebone at the time was Middlesex, St Sepulchre the square mile of the City of London and St Saviour Southwark across the river Thames in Surrey (though a small part of Southwark was traditionally part of the City).

London attracted people all the time. The death rate was high and new blood was required constantly if London was to continue to expand. The opportunities were great and people were pulled to the capital city from across the whole country. Your Jacob may have been born in the London area and just as easily he may not have been. The only index of London parish baptisms is at this point the IGI otherwise it would be a massive job to trawl through all the possible parish registers that are not covered by the IGI for a potential baptism somewhere circa 1754.

London (a much smaller place so this doesn't include the surrounding areas of Middlesex, Surrey, Kent and Essex we take for granted as central London today) in 1801 had a population of just under a million. With so many people in the area you have to expect there will be more than one person with the same name. Buck isn't a particularly rare surname so the two Jacobs might have a connection or they might not.

Have you traced the three daughters and Jacob's wife? Do they give any indication of the type of occupations the family might have been involved in? Any clues from their marriages of witnesses who might have a family connection?

There was also this son

JAMES BUCK
Christening:  23 JAN 1791   Saint Saviour, Southwark, Surrey
Father:  JACOB BUCK
Mother:  CATHARINE

James is the latin version of the Hebrew/arabic name Jacob.

Thanks, Valda; will try some more digging around with the daughters and their mother. I was interested that in searching for Jacob on IGI, James came up automatically and there were very few Jacobs indeed. I suppose I was hoping that someone might just have connections with the family or there was a pre-existing thread as I saw with another recent look up request; I was n't expecting people to trawl through loads of parishes. I will start in the East End and work back towards Westminster via Southwark. There are a lot of Bucks in St Dunstans and St G /East...

Hi

To find whether there has been a previous post on Jacob Buck all you need to do is use the Rootschat search engine at the top of the page, or Google as each topic on Rootschat is indexed by Google within minutes of it being posted. The name Jacob Buck will not be particularly common on Rootschat so a search would find any straight away. If anyone was researching this family they would surely have come across him.

Hi

I was just in the process of trying to get some info in relation to Jacob Buck and Catherine Talbot and their children when I came across your message and decided to join rootschat and respond.

Jacob and Catherine had another child not listed by you:
Maria Ann Buck born about 1783 in Southwark, Surrey - bapt on 9 Nov 1783 at St Saviour's Southwark.

Maria Ann is my gr gr gr gr grandmother who married John Hewitt on 19 July 1802 at St Mary Newington Southwark. John was born about 1781 (presumably in Surrey) , died in 1818 and was buried on 3 Dec 1818 at St Mary Magdalen in Bermondsey Southwark. They had 5 children.

After John died, Maria Ann married John King (a furrier and glover) on 4 Aug 1819 at St Botoph Bishopsgate, London and had another 3 children.

Hi

As a follow-up, the only information that I have been able to get from ancestry.com and familysearch.com states that Jacob Buck was born about 1751 to 1754 in St Marylebone and died in 1815 in Southwark, whilst Catherine Talbot was born in about 1755 in the same area of London as Jacob.

I cannot find any information in relation to the baptism or death of Catherine or to the baptism of Jacob.  As I live in Australia, I am basically restricted to online resources.

mainly for Dawn , Valda and mark54

Thanks for keeping this topic alive; I have added Maria Ann to my records. Even living close to London's many resources, I haven't got any more information about either Jacob Buck or Catherine Talbot as there are too many possibles and I am just hoping that someone else may have had more luck in the past and sees these rootschat posts as you did.
The situation is complicated by the fact that Rebecca Buck and George Noad issued banns for marriage in Southwark but I have never had a formal record that they actually did marry! Thre are children shown for George and Rebecca Noad (including my wife's ancestor, Robert) so whether they decided just to live together or whether the marriage is on a source as yet unknown, I dont know.  When George died in 1836, Rebecca remarried William Norton and died in St Barts hospital in 1830.
I hope there maybe someone out there who may have come across this family combination. If mark54 needs anything specific looked up that he cannot access in Oz, let me know. Apologies for late reply; have been away in Somerset.

You probably have this info but Jacob Buck buried 22/10/1815 St Saviour Southwark aged 61 which would give him a birthdate c 1754

Hi Mark

What evidence is given for these statements on these websites about Jacob and Catherine's birthplaces?

As a follow-up, the only information that I have been able to get from ancestry.com and familysearch.com states that Jacob Buck was born about 1751 to 1754 in St Marylebone and died in 1815 in Southwark, whilst Catherine Talbot was born in about 1755 in the same area of London as Jacob.

Is it just based on the fact that was the place they married because unfortunately that is only evidence that they were resident in Marylebone for three weeks prior to the marriage not that they were born there.

I would also like to know whether there is clear info about Jacob and Catherine being born in St Marylebone/Westminster. My own feeling is that Jacob Buck was probably from Southwark where there are a relatively large number of Bucks with wills at National Archive (but no Jacob unfortunately). Not sure where Catherine came from.  re Jacob may need to trawl through the baptism records for Southwark parishes not on IGI, if they are on A******Y / LMA site

Hello everyone

Thanks taylorwallace for the information in relation to Rebecca Buck and her marriages.

I did access the 22 Oct 1815 burial record for Jacob which led me to the 1754 birth date.

The Marylebone birth place for both Jacob and Catherine merely came from an IGI record posted on to the family search website which showed:

James Buck (birth about 1751 of St Marylebone, London) married Katherine Talbot (birth about 1755 of St Marylebone, London) on 12 Feb 1776.

I have since realised that this was probably just because they resided in the parish prior to their marriage.  Sorry about the anxious presumption/furphy on my part

Regards

 Hi

I have just located a baptismal record for a Jacob Buck on Ancestry who could be the father of Ann, Juliet Ann, Rebecca, Maria Ann & James.

The record shows that Jacob was christened in June 1754 at St Saviour's Church in Southwark, Surrey.
His parents are listed as James and Sarah, with James' occupation given as a Smith, the same as Jacob (when his son James was born in 1791 in the same parish)
