Interested in finding members of the Powell family descended from John Powell and Mary Powell MS James of Builth and Merthyr Tydfil, Wales who migrated to Pennsylvania US in the late 1800s.
Three of their children migrated. John Powell who married Mary ?, Annie, who became Mrs James Lewis and Mary Ann who married John Jones.
I have a copy of the WW1 Draft Registration card for John Powell Junior's son William Aubrey Powell born 10 July 1879, he was a reporter for the Standard Sentinel and lists his wife as Mrs Mary Powell on the card which was completed on Sept 12, 1918.
Any help gratefully received,
Dash

Thank you very much for all the information you posted. It has been extremely helpful. I especially liked the description of Aubrey on the WW2 Draft card. Would seem that Mary's maiden name was Smith from 1920 Census, but it doesn't look as though they had any children. Thank you so much for helping me solve this part of my Powell family puzzle in America.
I hope I can help you some day.
Many thanks, Dash

Hello Dashap.
Would you have a date of birth for Mary Ann Powell and John Jones please ?
I can see a couple in 1870 and 1880 living in Pennsylvania and who were both born in Wales. Mary Ann appears to be about 8 years older than John O Jones ???
-
Once again thank you for all your efforts. All I know about Annie Powell is she supposedly went to the US in 1856 with her husband James Lewis and made her home in Poughkeepsie, New York and died April 15, 1914 and is buried in Freeland Pennsylvania. Annie was born about 1836 in Builth, Wales. I have found a James Lewis born 1834 in Wales with a wife Annie born 1838 Wales in the 1900 US Census living in Poughkeepsie when I looked on Family Search just now. However that is the only census that comes up on the web here. It looks very hopeful, but hard to confirm this is the right couple. There are no children listed only a boarder David Williams, who was born in Ohio, but has Welsh parents. James is 66 and Annie is 62 and there is a record saying they had no children.
Any ideas as to where to go from here very welcome.
Many thanks, Dash

Have you tried this link for some census ?

Can't see anything in 1880 Ploughkeepsie New York for James and Annie.

I do know a little bit about Mary Ann Powell and John Jones. They had three children. John Henry Jones , James W Jones and Mary Ann Jones.
John Henry born 1860 married Joan Davies born 1861. They went to US in 1893 with their children Samuel b 1883, William H b 1885, and Albert b 1888. They had at least one more child in Pennsylvania a daughter with a hard to read name on the census looks something like Inez born 1897 Penn.
James W Jones born 1871 married Ellen A Morris b 1870. They went to USA in 1886. Their children all born in Penn. were Minnie b 1891, Adelaide b 1893, Arthur b 1896, Agnes who died aged 7 and Dorothy.
Mary Ann Jones b 1869 married Arthur Lewis born 1861. They went to USA in 1887. They had at least 4 children James A Lewis born 1892 and Mary p Lewis born 1897, however I do not know the names of the remaining children. They lived in the Freeland area I think. Will need to go back to the 1901 census to check.
Hope this fills in a few gaps for you. Thank you so much for going to all this trouble for me. I'm sorry I didn't tell you more at the start. Hope you can understand all this , I written it rather hurriedly .Dash.

So this must be John Jones and Joan.

Once again thank you very much for all your help. I was tired last night and so had to finish up. (I'm in Australia) however I was very pleased to find your last three posts when I got up this morning. The 1910 census entry was very strange, I've had some odd transcription errors on UK census records, but a totally different name and age for John H Jones is very peculiar. Was Patrick J Finn above the family on the original? I thought perhaps the transcriber might have missed a line out?? Or had John H Jones died and Patrick is the new man of the house???
I don't suppose we will ever know! Otherwise I'm sure you have the correct family.
I also have the burial dates for Mary P Powell 1837 -1906, Ellen A Jones 1870 - 1917 and James W Jones 1863 -1925 in Homestead Cemetery. Can you tell me how I could go about getting their death certificates? Is the 1930 census the latest one available? How do you access it, is it through Ancestry?
I really appreciate all the trouble you have taken with this. Do you have a connection to this area?
Many thanks, Dash
-
Hello Dash.
That 1910 Census was odd but I have seen the same thing happen before. Patrick J Flinn is nothing to do with that household and is listed at least 12 entries above. If you would like to see this for yourself, please send me a pm with your e-mail address and I will happily forward to you. The US 1930 Census is the latest one available for Pennsylvania. I honestly would'nt know the cheapest and best way to obtain a death certificate but know a man who would if you wish to do that.
A pleasure to help and obviously need to look further at the other information.
Regards. ;D

Hope all is going well. Found this entry which could well be the same as Jennet Powell on the 1880 Freeland Census since this 1920 is same area.
1920 Freeland Ward 1, Luzerne, Pennsylvania The address is Walnut Street. The address on the WW1 Draft for Aubrey which I could'nt read very much on was Walnut Street !!
Janet Powell 48 Single. Born in Pennsylvania. Both parents from Wales. Occupation:- Seamstress at home.
and in the 1930 this looks like the same person. Freeland, Luzerne, Pennsylvania Again in Walnut Street.
Janet Powell 58 Born Pennsylvania. Parents Wales. Single. Owns Own hone either $1800 or $2000 No Occupation.
-
New Source says Janet Powell born 9 May 1871 in Eckley, Foster Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania could have died 31 Jan 1955 in Danville, Mahoning Township, Montour County Pennsylvania - Source Standard Sentinel.
The parents John Powell and Mary AUBREY -
John Born 9 Nov 1841 in North Wales
Died 23 Sep 1904 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Parents William Powell and Elizabeth Morgan both died in Pennsylvania.
Plus another brother of John's married to what could be a sister a sister of Mary's (the name is Aubrey) - have you got any of that ?
Could be 2 different families getting crossed over with each other ?
Not convinced that the anc..try tree is correct on this. William Powell born 1817 in Wales and Elizabeth Morgan 1821 are in Pennsylvania in 1880 (William is a mine-boss) but children born from 1850 onwards are born in Pennsylvania.
The more I have looked today convinces me that those are the wrong parents for him !!
Also death of Ada listed as 1964 (No details)
-
This would be the William Powell who is married to Jane Aubrey. Can this be possible ?? ???
Is the connection correct ?
1900 Hazleton, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
William Powell 57 Born Wales Immigrated 1846. Married 1864
Jane Powell 56 -----This jane is born in Pennsylvania !!!! Yet on the 1880 census she was born in Wales and a father Thomas is with them on that census born 1805 Wales.
Jacob Powell 29
Mary Powell 27
Lizzie Powell 25

Have just managed to have a better look at all the information you've given me. I didn't know John Powell born Glasbury Brecon Wales about 1832 (1851 Census) was married to Mary AUBREY, but that would seem to be logical if they named their son William Aubrey Powell. I think John died 23.9.1904, but I have no definite proof even though I have a copy of the death certificate, to link him to parents John Powell and Mary James. If he is my John Powell he wasn't born in North Wales in 1841, or had father William Powell and mother Elizabeth Morgan.
John does have a brother William, but he was still in Wales later than 1851 and as far as I can find out stayed in Wales and England until his death.
I really need to apply for some more BDM certificates in the United Kingdom. Still have a lot to do! I am more confident about Annie Powell and James Lewis and Mary Ann Powell and John Jones, because of the ref to them in the Genealogical & Personal History of Western Pennsylvania Published 1915, reprinted may 1999 by Lewis Historical Publishing Co.
Will keep working on all your info over the next week in between family commitments!! Thank you so much you have given me a lot to work on. Do you have a connection to the Powells in Pennsylvania?
Have just had another look at the 1851 census for Glamorganishire in Wales and there is a Maria Aubrey b 1835 aged 16 living in Merthyr Tydfil the same as John Powell who is 19 in the same census living in Merthyr Tydfil also!! No luck with a marriage on Free BDM!
Perhaps they married in USA?!
Must stop now and start again tomorrow.
Many thanks, Dash
-
Hello Dashap.
No I don't have any connection to the Powells, just doing the look ups or a little research if I can help out. Amazing what you can find. Have also seen Aubrey written as Auberly, perhaps it is just a cooincidence !! I also looked for a marraige of Mary Aubrey to John Powell the other day but could'nt see anything. Hope the research is all coming together. ;D
-
The motto is - Never say never. (Is that a Winston Churchill quote !!) Look whats turned up today !! The 1880 census said John was 47 years making the birth year 1833. This 1900 gives Nov 1841 and we've nothing in between to check on. ???
According to what you read on this Census you would have to think that both Mary and John were already in Pennsylvania, both show early immigration dates, the marriage looks as if that could have been in the USA as well ???
1900 Census Freeland, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
John M Powel 58 Born Nov 1841 Wales. Marriage Year 1870. Married 30 years. Immigration 1866. Years in the USA 34. Agent.
Mary Powel 56 Born Sept 1843 Wales. Had 7 children and 4 survive. Immigrated 1868
Ada Powel 25 Born March 1878. Seamstress
John H Powel 23 Born Jan 1877 At School or Art School !! ?
Wm Duobray Powel 20 Born July 1879 The image is Aubrey. Labourer

I've just spent several hours checking between the various UK Census details, the Free BDM and Family Search as well as all your postings. John Powell is still single and living with his parents in Merthyr Tydfil in the 1861 census, so there is not much more I can find out about him before he immigrates in 1866, that will help link him indisputably with the John Powell you have found in the 1880 US census. You mentioned a 1870 record with John and Mary, what did it say?
I have found a Maria Aubrey working as a servant in London in 1861. There are lots of transcription errors on the typed page, but it can be seen quite clearly on the original. Such as Sarah Dewbrey, which is meant to be Aubrey, Shalonda Mannevy, which is meant to be Sophia Manning etc. Maria Aubury is listed as being a servant in the Relation column, when the original says "Niece" ... you get the picture!! However the original gives Maria Aubrey's birthplace as Berkshire .. when I want it to say Merthyr Tydfil, where I think she was bapt 30 June, 1837, daughter of John Aubrey and Elizabeth C057191. However I am also having trouble finding how she could be Sarah and Sophia's (whose maiden name was Aubrey) niece. Did they fill in her birth in Berkshire, because that's where she was born or because it followed on from what they filled in for themselves???
IGI has Sarah and Sophia both being baptised at St Mary Lambeth, Surrey, although Sophia has William and Mary as parents, whereas Sarah only has a mother named Elizabeth???? I can't link these women to John Aubrey, as I would need to do if they are claiming Maria as their niece. They are also closer to her grandfather's age then her father's.
Maria Aubrey's grandfather would seem to be the William Aubrey aged 50 watchmaker listed with the family John 30 Iron miner, Elizabeth 30 his wife and children Elizabeth 7, Maria 6 and David 2 all living around Merthyr Tydfil. So it's all a bit confusing!
My 94 year old Powell cousin is very intrigued with the US Powell women being seamstresses as some of the cousins in Australia were dressmakers too. However I think a lot of women at that time were dressmakers as we didn't have many factories making clothes like we do esp. in China nowadays.
Is there any way I can apply for a marriage certificate for John Powell and Mary? Would they be held by the Pennsylvanian authorities? That seems my only hope of making a definite connection across the Atlantic.
??? ???
I should have a bit more time to work on this now things are settling down this end.
Also are there immigration records for people coming into USA or did these only start later with Ellis Island? I'm presuming you live in USA and so know more about these things?!?
Until next time, thanks for giving me so much of your time with my Powell family, it's much appreciated.
Dash ???

Hello Dash.
I was trying to work on the 1843 birth date and these records for Mary Ann Aubrey with parents John & Elizabeth but I was trying to tie that in with a Jane married to a William Powell
I have seen an 1841 with a Jane and parents John and Elizabeth but the Mothers age is out by 5 years compared to 1851/61. Also John and Jane are missing in 1851/1861 and Elizabeth the daughters age is out by 5 years in 1851 So not sure about 1841.
1851 Merthyr, Glamorgan, Wales
John Aubrey 41 Born Merthyr. Proclaimer. Farmer. IGI Record 1809 Merthyr Tydfil Possible Parents John Aubrey and Ann
Elizabeth Aubrey 41

Mary Ann Aubrey 8
Amelia Aubrey 5
Louisa Aubrey 2
William Jones 83 Grand-Father.
1861 Merthyr Tydfil. Glamorgan. Wales

Mary Ann Aubrey 18 Green-Grocer

Incidentally its not relevant but the Mary Ann Aubrey born 4 Oct 1846 to Thomas & Sarah Aubrey also ended up in Pennsylvania married to John Turnbach in Eckley Twp, Luzerne, Pennsylvania and Mary Ann also died in 1902 Freeland, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. Perhaps they could have been cousins though both coming from Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales. There is also an International Marriage Record for those 2 in PA 1867. Pity we could'nt find that for your couple. ??? It is this Mary Ann's sister Jane who married William Powell I think ???
-
Is this the John Powell you mean -
1851 Glagburg, Breconshire, Wales.
John Powell 51 Mason
Mary Powell 46
Henry Powell 22 Mason
John Powell 19 Mason
David Powell 17 Mason
Ann Powell 14
Mary Powell 12
William Powell 10 Attending Masons
Margt Powell 8
John Gower 18 Lodger
Harriet Jones 15 Niece
I have'nt seen Mary Aubrey or John Powell on any passenger lists that fits between 1861 and 1872. The earliest birth for one of the children was Jennet/Janet 1871/2. The problem is they could have married in Wales or on route or in Pennsylvania. ???
-
:) :)Yes, that is the correct John Powell!! The Henry who is 22 is my great grandfather. John's place of birth is actually Glasbury, however I know that several family trees on Ancestry have it spelt incorrectly. That is very understandable as the writing on the original could easily be read that way. However my husband is Welsh and we lived in Wales with his grandma for a while, so we have numerous maps of Wales, so I'm pretty sure it is Glasbury, a village on the A438 road to the southeast of Builth Wells. If you look on IGI C047761 you will see his baptism 29 May 1831 at Glasbury.
1861 Census
John Powell 63 mason
Margaret Powell 56 (this should read Mary, but as she signed her name with an X when she got married she obviously couldn't read what was written by the enumerator and they could have easily become muddled with the daughter whose name was Margaret.)
John Powell 29 mason ( our John)
Margaret Powell 18
My great grandfather Henry Powell sailed to Australia via USA in 1853, so he is not in the 1861 census. However I was very fortunate, as Australian BD&M certificates give a lot more information than the UK or US certificates and when he married he gave his father as John Powell and his mother as Mary Powell MS James, so I was able to find the marriage very easily. Unlike John!!!
However as you say "never say never" ... maybe a current US descendant still has the original !! If only!
Thanks so much for persevering with this.... if you ever have the need for some research in Australia, I'd be only too happy to do all I could for you.

Great site, beautiful place.
Mary Ann had a sister Amelia born in 1846. Amelia marrried Simon Symons/Simons/Simmonds/Simmons in Dec 1870 at Merthyr. They use Aubrey as a middle name for one of their children.
1871 Census Merthyr-Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales - 36 Balaclava Road
Simon Simons 22 Rougher
Amelia Simons 25
John Simons 9 weeks
1881 Census Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales - 36 Balaclava Road.
Simon Symons 33 Heater In Iron-Works
Amelia Symons 35 Green-Grocer (Interesting because sister Mary Ann Powell had that occupation - wonder if they had a shop !!)
John Symons 7
Jesse Symons
1891 Census - Dowlais. Merthyr Tydfil. - 36 Balaclava Road.
Simon Simmons 43 Occupaation Roller.
Amelia Simmons 45 Occupation:- Huckster (Greengrocer)
John Simmons 17
Jessie Simmons 10
Elizabeth Simmons 8
Mary Ann Simmons 5
Daniel Aubrey Simmons 1 and 6 months
-
1901 Census. Dowlais. Merthyr Tydfil - 36 Balaclava Road.
Simon Simmonds 52 Roll Rapper in Iron Works Died June 1919 Merthyr.
Amelia Simmonds 55 Althoughh the age would be incorrect -possibly died June 1917 Merthyr.
John Simmonds 27 Looks like Hospital Student (Institute !!)
Jessie Simmonds 20
Elizabeth A Simmonds 18 (The middle name of Elixabeth as per BMD is Amelia)
Mary A Simmonds 14 (Middle Name as per 1881 Census Ann)
Daniel A Simmonds 11 (Middle name as per 1881 Census Aubrey) I think Daniel marries Elizabeth A Hughes in 1914 Merthyr Tydfil and they have at least 3 children:- John A Sept 1914. William H Dec 1917 and Elizabeth A 1920 all born Merthyr.

Oh Dash !!! ???
4 Hours of power washing and I start the search again only to discover Elizabeth Aubrey (Widow) on the 1871 Wales Census with daughter Emma and Louisa Robertshaw born 1863 - Grand-Daughter. There were 2 Louisa Robertshaw born in 1863, one in June 1863 Bradford and the other Sept 1863 Hereford.
Unfortunately, I have now found a marriage of Mary Ann Aubrey to Henry Robershaw Dec 1861 Merthyr. Henry Robertshaw was born in Bradfoprd 1839 but lived in Merthyr on the 1861 Wales Census.
Mary Ann Aubrey/Robertshaw died in Sept 1864 Merthyr. Henry is described as a widow on the 1871 Wales Census.
So that Mary Ann Aubrey cannot be our Mary Ann married to John Powell
It would have to ba Marie if it was this family.
In reply 21 you refer to Mary P Powell 1837-1906 - but she is on the 1910 census :( :(
-
Mary P Powell 1937 - 1906.
Have just gone back to the source, which I had found on freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com but for some reason Homestead Cemetery doesn't appear there now!! ??? However had made a note at the time querying the P, as this is Mary Ann Powell mother to James W Jones and mother in law to Ellen A Jones, who died in Steubenville, Ohio.
Perhaps a transcription error from the gravestone?
I should have noted that error when I posted it. Sorry ???
You may have noted that the Powell children all started off with a single given name at birth, but nearly all give themselves a middle name when they are adults . My Henry became Henry Theophilus when he arrived in Australia. John has M as a middle initial when he gets to USA. William adds James in the UK census and so on........

Hi Dash.
Yes, with you now - mixing the Mary Powell's up. Obviously had too much sun today. Sorry my mistake ???
Going back to anc..try tree with Mary Auberly named as wife to John - death date 27 Nov 1915 in Freeland, Foster Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
Have you tried approaching a library in the Freeland/Lucerne area to see if you cann get a look up for that death ? Wondered if that might be worth a try ? ???
N/B You should have received some e-mails ??
-
Just found this - the 1841 birth date given again ???
JOHN M. POWELL, miner at Freeland, was born in North Wales, November 9th,
1841, and married Mary Auberly, of Buck Mountain, Pa. He was elected
February 17th, 1880, one of the councilmen and inspector of election of
Freeland.

The First Section on Freeland here mentions a John M Powell a couple of time.

I had come across this reference before, which is part of my reason for wanting to nail a marriage cert for my John.
Just checked Free BDM the only John M Powell is John Morgan Powell born Q June 1842 Brecknock. Hardly North Wales?!?
Was he trying to portray himself as a younger man to make himself more electorally attractive? I'm really stretching the point here!!!!!!!
Must go am already running late! Dash

Hello Dash.
Hope things are okay and today has been a better day. This is good news and perhaps dates the marriage as well
Just to remind you Janet Powell born 9 May 1871 in Eckley, Foster Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
Ada gave the date of immigration as 1870 on the 2 nd Passport Appilcaton. This 1870 Census was taken on the 1 st June 1870. Age is out again but its the right people in the right place at the right time !! ;D

Ada Powell appears in the City Directory 1936/37/38 Ithaca. New York which is just confirming what we read on the passenger lists really.
Social Service League, Ada Powell, Head Wkr. West Side House. 920 W. Buffalo and North Side House, 119 third.
Other entries show other names:- President, Vice President, Secretary Treasurer etc.,
1952 City Directory - Ithaca - says - r110 W Seneca (Think the "r" stands for rents.

Your find in the 1870 census looks very interesting. John seems to have made changing his age an art form over the years. Many thanks for finding this piece of the jig saw puzzle.
Looking back through my notes from the library there is a book by Norm & Peggy Drasher, Tombstone Inscriptions Luzerne County Pennsylvania Part IV names and dates transcribed from the Freeland Cemetery p92 Lewis Annie 1836 - 1914 wife of James Lewis. p117 James Lewis 1838-1916, Martha Lewis 1883-1916 and Amelia Lewis 1842-1913.
I also have another note Annie Lewis nee Powell died April 15, 1914 buried Freeland Cemetery.
However I haven't had much luck finding James and Annie Lewis nee Powell!
It gets even more confusing when Mary Ann Powell's daughter Mary Ann Jones marries Arthur Lewis.
I thought perhaps the Annie Lewis was the one listed with Carrie and John as 2 of her 7 surviving children in the 1900 Census, but that doesn't fit with James dying in 1916.
I think I need some sleep, my brain just isn't making sense of this at present!!
Dash ???

Hello Dash.
We are still looking for Census information for James Lewis born about 1834 Wales and Annie (nee Powell) Lewis born about 1837 Wales who immigrated abt 1854. (Only have them in 1900 at the moment)
It may be worth you trying to get in touch with the owner of anc..try tree referred to in reply 9. They have a James Lewis and Ann Powell listed as the family I picked up in reply 6/7/8/9
Is there a link between James Lewis 1834 Wales and Arthur Lewis 1861 Wales ?
Is there a link between Owen Ellis and Richard Ellis to the Powell family ?
Clutching at straws to try and get you further information. There is someone who will do marriage license look ups in Allegheny and if you are looking for something else then please ask they may assist (3rd name on list) Also first name on the list says would look ups for obituaries. Could this be worth a try to see if you can get the death record for John Henry Jones and Jean/Joan Davies/Jones ? The last sighting was the 1910 Census ???
and:
James W Jones who we last saw as a widow in 1920 with daughter Addie/Adelaide and who you think died in 1925
His wife Ellen Morris/Jones who we last saw in 1910 Allegheny and who you think died in 1917. Both buried Homestead Cemetery.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/08j4/
An update so that you can see where I am with the search, looking for the link between Ellis/Lewis and Powell but nothing yet. Reply 61 with Owen Ellis, I have tracked them back to 1860 Pennsylvania and 1851 Wales Census. (Will post below - so that you can see them) Only 2 options for a marriage for Owen and Emma that I can see - the first one Owen Ellis to Emma Jones would be March 1842 Bangor (so again that would be back in North Wales) and the second Owen Ellis to Emmett Martell June 1843 Narbeth. Wales. (Narbeth is in a direct line with Merthyr as the crow flys but seems to be 74 miles from Merthyr)
The second looks the best option bearing in mind where Owen was born ??? and that the spelling of his wife is Ernet on the 1851 Census ??? Possible option of Owen on the 1841 census but I need to spend more time looking into that option. Likewise with Emmett Martell, I can find and Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary but no Emmet/Emma and the IGI for Narbeth isn't covering 1820 ??? The passenger lists are not throwing up anything for Owen, Emmett/Emma and Martha which is between 1851/1856 ???
On the 1871 Census with John and Mary Powell - Richard Lewis age 23 years - 5 BMD records covering March 1846 -June 1848 for Richard Lewis in Merthyr Tydfil which isn't helping a search down that line. No immigration record coming to light for him either.
Arthur Lewis 1861 Wales married to Mary Ann Jones (daughter of John Jones and Mary Ann Powell - sister of John Powell) It will be difficult to track John Jones back to Wales without further information - Jones is quite a prolific surname in Wales.
1871 Census for Builth, Brecknockshire, Wales would throw up an option for him (but sadly no Richard in that household) and since he immigrated later than the Powells, its not definite he came from Glamorgan. Think we have covered the family of Arthur and Mary Ann and established the death dates for them.
Annie Powell (sister of John Powell born abt 1837) married to James Lewis, no other sightings in Poughkeepsie. New York, other than the 1900 Census showing just the two of them. How do you know they lived in Poughkeepsie ? ??? No immigration record for them either. So lots of different avenue's tried and no connections. ???
These are the 2 census that refer to Owen Ellis
1850 Wales Census
Owen Ellis 31 Born Llanllyfni, Caernarvonshire, Wales
Ernet Ellis 30 Born Nuntoion, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Martha Ellis 4 Born Llanginog, Glamorgan, Wales
1860 Hazle, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
Owen Ellis 40 Born Wales
Emma Ellis 40 Born Wales
Martha Ellis 13 Born Wales
David Ellis 3 Born Pennsylvania.
Ellis J Ellis 1
Probably best to keep all the information in one place for the moment so that others can see the relationships between the families otherwise things get duplicated. Hope I have covered everyone. ???
If I have made any mistake with these relationships, perhaps you can let me know so that we can correct. It does get quite complicated and involved when the names are the same or similar. ???
-
Yes I had looked at that Lewis tree, however Annie' parents were incorrect and her death date was out as well.
I've tried to contact several people with the 1851 census entry for John and Mary Powell as a source in their family trees on Ancestry, but so far no replies.
I think Richard Lewis could have known the Powell family in Merthyr Tydfil, as there is a Richard living nearby to them, who fits..... but there are so many Jones, Lewis, Marys, Johns and James it's a real guessing game without concrete evidence.
I will follow up tomorrow with your suggestion about the marriage license look ups.
Till then, Dash

Note your Post 30 Munhall.
From p975 of Genealogical & Personal History of Western Pennsylvania Vol 2
"Mr Jones ( James) built himself a handsome residence of buff brick on Margaret Street Munhall as well as another house in the immediate vicinity" :)
1871 Census for Wales
Jones John 36
Jones Mary Ann 32
Jones John Henry 12
Jones James 7
Mary Ann 1
Powell William James 30
living Hill Street Bedwelty, Rhymney
William James Powell is listed as a visitor, but I'm pretty sure he is Mary Ann Jones nee Powell's brother as the age is correct.
-
1861 Census Wales
Jones John 27 iron rougher born Clyro Radnorshire
Jones Mary Ann 22 born Llanarth Radnorshire
Jones John 2 born Gellgaie Glamorganshire
living at 91 Tredegar Rd Bedwelty Rumney
in 1871 John senior gives the same birthplace
Mary Ann gives Builth ( which is correct)
and John Henry Gellygear (correct spelling today Gelligaer)
perhaps Mary Ann's brother William James Powell who was also born in Builth reminded her in 1871 that she too was born in Builth, not Llanarth as she said 10 years earlier. ??? ???
-
Death of John Jones
According to G & P History of W Penn John Jones died in Wales at the age of 47, having been born in 1830.
BDM entry Mar Q 1877 John Jones aged 47 Bedwelty 11a 83 would be a possibility.
As 1881 Census for Wales has
Jones Mary A Widow 42 born Radnorshire (no town on original)
Jones John H son 22 platelayer born Glamorgan
Jones James son 17 mason born Rhymney
Jones Mary A 11 born Rhymney
at 9 Hill Street Bedwelty

James Lewis
US 1880 Census Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (not Poughkeepsie!!)
Lewis James 47 born Wales Engineer, Father & Mother born Wales
Lewis Annie 38 born Wales House keeping, Father & Mother born Wales
Lewis Agnes 21 born Wales Dress maker, Father & Mother born Wales
James is the correct age, but Annie has taken a few years off! Can't find the family in Wales in 1861 census. Have a feeling I've checked this before and discounted it, perhaps occupation "Engineer" didn't ring true?

Hello Dash.
Can see you have been burning the mid-night oil with these exciting new discoveries.
Looks as if the James Lewis and Ann Powell marriage would be Wales if Agnes was born in Wales. The USA does not have a BMD index like the UK and what is available varies state to state. Can't instantly see them on the 1870 census.
It isn't unusual for immigration dates and ages to vary from census to census, sometimes I wonder if they did'nt know and could'nt remember. ???

I think I may have some of the information you are looking for...please contact me about the Powells/aubreys
-
I haven't got the JONES in my tree so I can't tell you anything about them. I won't say that they aren't part of my tree except that I haven't added that branch yet!!! ..
I descend from the AUBERYS ... MARY AUBERY has a sister ANN in Wales.. she is my direct ancester. I only recently found the link to MARY in Pennsylvania because I found a letter written by JANET POWELL to ADA and I went in search of these people, the letter was about her grandfather AUBERY in Wales.
Since posting I have found out a lot about JOHN POWELL and his wife MARY AUBREY ... and their children Janet + ADA + JOHN + AUBERY all POWELLS of course.
I also know more about the AUBREYS back in Wales as they are my direct line. Although THOMAS AUBREY marys father is my brick wall. I can't find his parents.
What is very interesting is that JANET POWELL was also very intersted in family history as was her sister ADA and Janet has written many articles about the Aubrey family home and generally about the family, but sadly she didn't have any proof of the direct lineage either, so it remains very vague.
If I remember correctly the MARY in wales that you have linked in the wrong MARY AUBERY, there are several, but I may be mistaken as it was a few days ago that I read through your posts.
I would be very interested in contacting you via e-mail to see if we can fill in the gaps or add to each others information.

My research on the Powells in America since 2010 has been limited, as I practically gave up trying to link John M Powell to the John Powell son of John Powell and Mary James. I did find some information and two photos of Ada, plus a bit more about Aubrey. However since then I have concentrated on John Powell senior and his daughter Margaret. You might remember the article said she came to Australia and didn't marry. Much to amazement that is exactly what happened. She was the sole beneficiary of her father's money and spent quite a bit of it by sailing to Australia in the Britania. She eventually died in hospital in Melbourne of peritonitis caused by a perforated stomach ulcer. There was a coroner's inquest. All very sad and not much help from Henry from all accounts.

Currently I doubt if I am related to your John M Powell, as I can find no confirmation that he is the John Powell, son of John Powell and Mary James. My direct line is through his brother Henry Powell their eldest son born St Davids, Brecon in 1829. Dash
