Title: Allingham and Morton
Post by: chappers on Monday 05 April 10 10:55 BST (UK)
Hello
I would appreciate any information about my great great uncle Robert  Allingham, born 1869 (in Sligo).  He joined the Royal Irish Rifles.  By 1911 he was a widower and living in Belfast.  He had four children and worked as a commissionaire.  Does anyone know what this job would entail?  He married his second wife Margaret Morton in 1915; I believe she was from Salford, Lancashire.
Thanks for any help
Carol

Here's a link to Robert Allingham in 1911 Census-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Dock_Ward/Strathaden/138602/
Occupation listed as "Royal Irish Rifles. (Commissioners)" but not sure what that means- might be a query Armed Forces board can help with.
Children's birthplaces might also help pin down his movements.
1901 census is due to be added to National Archives website mid-2010 and since youngest child (age 11) gives birthplace as Belfast City Robert should be there in 1901.

A commissionaire was an early sort of security guard. They had rather splendid uniforms and were usually ex-service personnel. See:

Hello Sodabread

I was pleased to receive your message.  I have found out a certain amount of information about Robert Allingham.  He was born in Co. Sligo in 1869 and his sister Susan Withers nee Allingham was my great grandmother.  I think Robert died in about 1938 in Belfast.  I discovered he had been in the Royal Irish Rifles from information given on the censuses and also know he had been married twice.  I am interested to know where Robert may have served whilst in the Royal Irish Rifles and wonder if you would have any information about this.   I believe one of his sons was born in South Africa in about 1898.  I was also wondering if you would have a photo of Robert you would be willing to share.

Thank you for contacting me, it's great to know I have a distant cousin who is an Allingham descendant

Regards, Carol

Hi Carol,

This is the family in 1901

The birth place given for the children gives a little insight into his travels.

A word of warning- marriage certificates do NOT list religion of bride and groom so it's likely that 'Church of Ireland' under each is a reference to the church they married in rather than their actual religion.

Hi Carol,
I don't have anything on his military background. His occupation was a doorman for a hotel in Belfast. He had eight children with Margaret Morton, four sons, John, Robert (my father), Edward and William. William was killed in WW11 his plane was shot down over Germany. I am unaware of any of them being born in South Africa, perhaps from his first marriage. The daughters names were Isobel, Ester, Madge and Betty (Elizabeth).
I only know of two daughters from his first marriage interested to hear if indeed there were more children from that marriage.
I have information about his death and why he was in a mental hospital if you care to know. This is information I would prefer not to share in public.
As soon as I learn how to send a picture I will send it to you.
Your distant cousin Bob.

Hello Carol,
I have just joined this site. Robert Allingham was my Great Uncle. He and Great Maggie lived at No 5 Ebor Street, off the Donegall Road in Belfast, NI. I was born at No 19, 70 years ago today. Their son John was my Grandfather. I have 1 or 2 photos of their children on my PC. Iam trying to trace my family history, with some success. Regards
William, aka Lee Morton

Hello William,
Thank you for your message of 6th April about Robert Allingham and best wishes for your 70th birthday.  Robert Allingham, born in Sligo, was my great great uncle, being brother of my great grandmother Susan Allingham who married Edward Withers in 1887 at Sligo and they later moved to Belfast.  Robert had another sister Mary.  I expect you will have already seen the family information on this topic about my own Allingham connection and the photo of Robert and Margaret Morton.  I have since found out some further facts, e.g his 1st wife was Kate Brett of Co. Leitrim who he married in 1892.  Perhaps we could exchange some correspondence.  You say your name is Lee Morton so I wondered if you are a descendant from Margaret Morton's side?
Regards, Carol

Thanks for the birthday wishes Carol.
Margaret Morton was my Great Aunt, my Granddad John's sister. I was in and out of their house on a daily basis as a child. I am in touch with some 2nd cousins through Facebook. Sisters Margaret Hoey and Ann Murray. They are from the Allingham line and I believe Margaret or Aunt Maggie, as I knew her was their Grandmother. Also I have a second cousin called Ron Sinton who is from Maggie's line also. There is a story that some of the Allingham boys left for Canada and joined what was then called The Northwest Mounted Police but I am not sure of which boys they were. I have also found some Allinghams in America from California, both living in Nevada. Another Rob and Joanne. Joanne's married name is Puttman. Carol, I would glad to keep in touch and any help we can give each other can only be good.
Take care.

Hello William

Thank you for the message yesterday, Sunday.  It was interesting to read of your family connections.  I don't know any of the names you mention unfortunately and have been concentrating on the Allingham line mainly rather than Morton.  I think I may be a generation behind you.  I know that Robert's sister Mary Allingham, my great great aunt, married William George of Scotland and one of their sons was in the Royal Flying Corps and sadly died in October 1917.  It would be great to keep in touch so I look forward to hearing from you again when convenient
Regards Carol
